Central location is the most important benefit to having it in Louisville. Having the ability to have the youth tournament the day after the middle school is the second biggest benefit to having it at this venue. We use to piggy back youth to the high school tournament until the snow/ice event caused the state tourney date to be changed. When that happened, the youth tournament also had to change because the KHSAA decided it wanted to reserve the Sunday of HS state for potential weather issues and to allow HS state to be completed that same weekend. So we all came together and decided to piggyback youth state on MS state. Moving mats, set up, volunteers and everything that goes along with both MS and Youth State benefit from being the same location and on one weekend. Also we seen a huge increase in viewing of MS by youth that came down on Saturday and watched MS. Just like they did when they followed HS. As for the money, every club is able to work tables and other opportunities to make money for their club and to help it run smoother. I can tell you, most parents want to watch their kid during their session and then get award and leave. I’ve ran/worked both youth and MS tournament for 9 years now and can’t tell you how many years it was impossible to get the 20 tables covered for youth or help loading or unloading gear. I can tell you that the River City program kicks ass when it comes to set up and tear down. I’m there Friday morning and don’t leave til late Sunday night and their parents are there in full force. The only thing that needs to get better is the food selection, quantity and price. Also they should have a hospality room for the MS state and HS state. Most can’t leave the mat all day, it makes it nice to run back and grab a sandwich with the 10 minutes you can squeeze in. As for parking, it’s expensive but a nature of the beast for the location. Hotels and restaurants everywhere for families to enjoy the whole weekend. Montgomery County were class acts and held a great tournament, but as we grow the venue and times have to change. Just my 2 cents. Great to see this forum being used. Some great points being brought up. Best of luck to all your wrestlers this year!! May they hit the podium!!

I always assumed that was the original intent of the weight allowance. The "growth allowance" was for those that had already been wrestling those weight classes. I like it, have to wrestle two MS tournaments at a weight to be eligible for the allowance.

So Fed Up, reading between the lines it seems that this is really about a meeting that you missed and a vote that didn't go the way you wanted it to, had you been there, correct? I'm sure the board would prefer to have all coaches attend meetings and feedback/votes from them.

I couldn't agree with this statement more. It is what it is. I have never been in favor of cutting especially at the youth and middle school level. Cutting puts a focus on winning and I've always felt that to be shortsighted. Our kiddos should learn to love the sport first. It's hard enough for an 8, 10 or 12 year old to learn to wrestle. Throw cutting on top of that and we end up losing them sooner or later. But it is a part of the sport and the kiddos that do it shouldn't be raked across the coals for doing so. We also shouldn't make excuses for our kiddos when they lose to a child that is obviously cutting. It's wrestling.

If we took the TOP 10 KY wrestlers in every weight class in middle school and went up against every other states TOP 10 in every weight class how would KY do? Decent? Are wrestlers need schooled in different styles, strategies and match ups! What Programs work during the off season besides the Clubs? Is there programs and open gyms for ANY and EVERYONE who wants to get better? I understand NOTHING is FREE! But it would be nice to have a open gym all summer for wrestlers who want to improve! How can we make this affordable and happen? It would be fantastic if KY wrestlers could get Mat time with the best KY coaches! See different styles and strategy! I know we have CAMPS! Been to MANY! I would prefer a open gym. Were all the great KY coaches Voulenteer a week out of the summer to help! We could have different coaches teach all summer. Just to benifit KY wrestling. #UnitedWeStand!

The STATE of Kentucky allows a 2Lb weight allowance for "Growth" In MIDDLE school? You should have to make the original weight TWICE before the 2Lb weight allowance is in effect! Or you should not be able to wrestle that weight! You have MIDDLE school kids, who never wrestled in the original weight class ALL season! Then they use the 2LB weight allowance to drop and cut weight! Should KY really be encouraging kids to use the 2LB allowance for "Growth" if they haven't wrestled that weight All year? I'm ok if they at least wrestled at the original weight class at least twice! It's almost like we are encouraging MIDDLE school Kids to CUT weight? Now in HIGH school, that's a different story! I understand wrestlers are trying to get scholarships! It's also a different age group. Just Saying.

Making the scratch weight twice...... Before receiving the 2 pound weight allowance seems fair. That shows that you made the scratch weight and you truly need the 2 pounds to stay in your weight class..... But this is like the price is right.... Come on down..... My son's weight class is going to be tough no matter what. He could possibly cut down a class.... But honestly I don't think he would want to. He would have to eat healthy .... His Knickname is Suge.... He likes sugar LOL...

We are fortunate enough to have a year round program. We can work out and drill but we don’t usually travel and compete. I am at a disadvantage that I can’t coach my son on the mat. If so we would be all over getting the in during off season. Would be great if other clubs would be able to practice as well. I know how lucky we are to be where we are.

There is now a POLL up about the 2LB weight allowance! Made by grappler of old. GO VOTE! It's in the youth forum!

It's hard to compete at a high level and not participate year round! Summer wrestling creates Winter Champions. Many SCHOOL programs shut down after the season is over. We NEED a summer open gym for those wrestlers who want off season work. But unfortunately the school say's the seasons over. See you next year. ARE WE THE BAD NEWS BEARS? It would be nice to have a PROGRAM open its doors and say come in. We will help you get better. Back to ORGINAL question? We have done it year around once. We play baseball, football, and intermeral basketball, and of course wrestling. But if you want to be on the top podium? I think you almost have to go all year in the same sport. At least in wrestling. Football and Wrestling teams either work together? Or the coach wants his football players in the weight room.

YES! Either wrestle two Tournaments or make the ORGINAL weight twice! Even a dual would count. Just have to make ORGINAL weight TWICE! To even be eligible for the allowance! Nothing we can do about it. A rule is a rule. People will always look for a edge. Maybe in the future KY gets this right.

I liked how Montgomery county did the FINALS! It was a little crowded! The arena after Montgomery was TERRIBLE! Couldn't see JACK for parents walking in front of the matches! I like Louisvlle and all the mats and ability to actually see! We should ALL work together to make Tournaments or Duals that will make every program some money! We need to KNOW in advance before a VOTE is made! I understand your point now FED UP! The COST is what I don't like! Hotels are NOT cheap! It's NOT cheap to park! To eat! Ect ect! Not EVERY good wrestler has it made at home! Maybe work in some scholarships for wrestling families that need help to attended state? Maybe get a hotel to give a couple rooms out for FREE! Since we do fill them up?

Should you have to make original weight class twice? To be allowed to use the 2Lb "Growth" allowance? Yes or No? No Iffy or maybe senerios. Have to make the original weight TWICE? Or you are not eligible for the 2LB "Growth" allowance? That's my real question. Thanks for taking the time to answer and give feed back.

Same here, Nate was a 97 lbs last year at states, and now is a lean 119 and wrestles 121. The two pounds can be helpful for those trying to cut, but I am not a fan of it. I have had my son "bulking up" so to speak this season. Our goal is 10% BF, and to be 1 pound over a few days before each tourney. Trying to healthy, hydrated, and STRONG. He keeps eyeballing 113, with the 2lb allowance he could probably do it, but I won't let him. It doesn't help him, and it doesn't help the team. But, the culture is to cut. The chaos will begin right after the new year!

I have a kid who is going to need the two lbs. He wrestled 92 in February and wrestles 113 now. Kid is growing at rate of like two lbs a month. Started the season at 110 and now weighs 113 on the dot. He will be lucky to stay under 115 by February. He is tall and lean and doesn't have much to lose. For kids like him the two pounds is crucial. Otherwise he will wind up in the bottom end of the next weight class.

I think you have your associations mixed up. The KWOA is the Kentucky Wrestling Officials Association. They had nothing to do with moving the middle school state tournament nor should we get any split of profits.

No middle school aged kid should cut weight at all.

Moving MS state away from Montgomery County made zero sense to me aswell.

Notorious , To expound , we have a wrestler who wrestles the 113# class however the most he has ever weighed is 110# , he is generally about 107# so when the 2# allowance will put him where he just barely misses due to lack of body fat to lose. Now we could encourage him to do what we did in the 80s and cut 5+ lbs overnight so he could wrestle 105, however we do not as over the years we have come to learn how dangerous this is. Now unfortunately there WILL be those who do cut drastically to meet the allowance ,that is where it is up to the parents and coaches to prevent.Either that or we adopt a skin fold program like the high schools.

That is precisely my point. We have board members who are there only for themselves rather than for the kids. Politics is killing our ASSN. The whole purpose of the board and our ASSN. is to govern and protect our sport and athletes, however as of the last couple years our board has become a self serving entity. The state tournament was held for years at Montgomery County which was a great venue, now it is in Louisville Convention Center where they run out of concessions for the spectators, the coach's room is basically non-existent parking is expensive as well as admission . If they wanted to change locations why were the schools and clubs not given a chance to bid for the right to hold state tournament , we have several schools that could handle that capacity. It begs the question who's pockets are getting lined? If not that then what favors are being exchanged. In my opinion! I hope some members of our forum see this and start to question and make sure to attend coaches meetings and/or step up and run for a seat on the board to take us back to the system of what's best for our sport and our kids.

I do not believe ANY child under the age of 15 who is not obese should cut weight period. Youth/middle school wrestling should be about learning the sport and having fun. I see way too many overly competitive parents in the youth grades at the tournaments my 3 grandsons are going to. I have seen one boy wrestle 2 different weight classes in the same event and was seriously larger than the smaller group. But whatever advantages achieved by weight cheating at this age will be eliminated by the time they reach high school. They are not going to be offered a Scholarship out of middle school are they?
