    Board Issues

Spot on. We ran an open mat last summer. Totally free, and three times a week to make sure there were enough opportunities for people to come. The first night....we had at least 25 or 30 kids. Mostly youth, but we were excited. It quickly tapered off to 6-10 that would show up regularly. If we can't get the numbers, the ROI just isn't there.

    Board Issues

The best way to help our young wrestlers is to grow the sport. That is the biggest problem we have is the lack of participation. If we want to make it better for the kids, we need more kids in the rooms. Depth is our biggest problem. We leave it up to the local coach's to do all the recruiting, but we need to run a recruiting campaign for the sport, not just our teams. That means using the biggest, and best venue we can. I don't believe a local HS is the right choice for the state championships. That should be the showcase tournament! Needs to be a spectacle that anyone would enjoy. We have to grow the sport...big lights, big venues, good seats, good food, fair price. We get more kids in the rooms, the rest will work itself out.
  3. I always assumed that was the original intent of the weight allowance. The "growth allowance" was for those that had already been wrestling those weight classes. I like it, have to wrestle two MS tournaments at a weight to be eligible for the allowance.
  4. Same here, Nate was a 97 lbs last year at states, and now is a lean 119 and wrestles 121. The two pounds can be helpful for those trying to cut, but I am not a fan of it. I have had my son "bulking up" so to speak this season. Our goal is 10% BF, and to be 1 pound over a few days before each tourney. Trying to healthy, hydrated, and STRONG. He keeps eyeballing 113, with the 2lb allowance he could probably do it, but I won't let him. It doesn't help him, and it doesn't help the team. But, the culture is to cut. The chaos will begin right after the new year!

    Specialized Sports

Same here. My kid has always been wrestling and football. He has decided to give up football and stick to wrestling year round. I have been coaching for a long time now, the injuries can happen no matter what. But, proper training is key to avoiding them. Playing a second sport does not help prevent injuries, its the different type of practices and training that will focus on muscle groups that might get missed in specialized training. I put my kids that wrestle year round on a different fitness program during the "off season" than regular season. We focus on strength and flexibility. So far (knock on wood) my son, or any of my kids have had any injuries.
  6. We were looking for a weeknight home dual, you guys are a little far for that.
  7. I would be interested in a dual that week. What team are you?
  8. Just getting a chance to read y'alls feedback. Jeremy and I appreciate it as we try to make this a premier season opener again next year. We have learned some valuable lessons and will make next years even better. I will sure to pass along the praise to our team moms, they run a tight ship! Coach T.

Yeah, it will work itself after a few more tournaments and kids settle into their weight classes. Pretty sure Chris does this just for fun and conversation. I am stuck at home recovering from surgery, so I have a lot of spare time to post this stuff...lol.

121 Results Guaranteed Places 1st Place - Julius Gerencser (Daleville Indiana) 2nd Place - Michael Conner (McCracken County) 3rd Place - Reece Goss (Woodford County) 4th Place - Nathan Messina (John Hardin) 5th Place - Matthew Ball (Larue County) 6th Place - Blake Botts (McCreary Only thing I'll add is even though Connor took second, he was in the bottom bracket. Messina, Goss, and the indiana kid were all in the top. Messina lost to Goss twice at the KWOA. Last year at regionals Messina pinned Connor.
