With all due respect to you and your opinion, my son excelled in several sports. While not measuring up to your standards in wrestling he did participate in 3 sports throughout his high school carrier while achieving nearly straight A's in his course work. (He had three B's in his 12 years of school). He has been a two time discus state champion and runner up another reason year and could end up with a third totaled this year. He has one shot put title with a runner up and a forth place another year. He was an All American football player with a five star rating his senior year. This earned him a completely paid for 4 year scholarship to a Division one school. He was offered by nearly every SEC school and several Big 10 schools and could have gone where ever he chose. He was ranking, in rivals final ranking, third in the nation at offensive tackle in the 2016 class and number 15 in the nation overall in this class. He was president off the FFA chapter this year as well as active in our local Church. He strives to do the best at whatever he takes in but he has to spread out his time in many interest. He achieved all of this not doing any of these sports full time. If this is a failure to you, I think your idea of success is somewhat flawed. I suspect he could have had the success you mentioned had he focused on just one sport or activity. However, he chose to enjoy several and has has a fair level of success with all of his ebdevors. Even more, he is widely accepted and loved where ever he goes. I also know his heart belongs to our Lord and savior. This last point is the point that makes me most proud. Maybe he did not live up to the billing but I can tell you as his fathe, I could not be more proud of my son than I am right now! I expect him to only get better as he matures and grows into a man.

YOUNG GOT HIS TITLE A HUGE SIZE ADVANTAGE. CHANDLER GOT HIS TITLE AND WON A FEW CLOSE ONES WHERE HE OUT WRESTLED THE COMP ,220 to me had studs who could wrestle more so than any of the 4 top weights .Physically and skill level wise I thought they were a cut above What about Colby Culver losses twice to Reed but was winning for third when he got caught and got the W over a kid who was over 50 and 0 before this weekend .Nice work ,Chandlers finals opponent I. believe his name was Chance was at a huge size disadvantage hard to overcome . 195 wasn't so bad without Frankrone but it and the whole level of comp at the tournament was lowered without Him . I was at a bit of a loss at 182 I didn't know many of them and actually thought it would be a lot tougher than it appeared with kids trying to stay away from Frankrone . CORNETT DOMINATED 170 AS EXPECTED HE IS A NATIONAL LEVEL GUY BUT.CAN IMPROVE FOR SURE . DUNCAN IS A STUD ,Heidorf and Andre on as well . 2 years in a row Mason Smith loses only to the eventual state champ ,His time is coming soon . SAUL IS NOT THE KING OF KY Wrestling although he is good Oshebein was clearly a little cut above wether it was a physical age thing or not . VASQUEZ AND BINDNER HAD A GREAT MATCH BINDNER FINALLY GETS A W LIKE A FEW OTHERS HE WAS ON THE FENCE and has been the last couple years BUT PUT IT TOGETHER PULLING OUT ALL THE STOPS PHYSICAL MENTAL AND MAYBE EVEN SPIRITUAL TO GET THE W Over the king of KY wrestling Angel Vasquez ,Perhaps the one match where the kids themselves were complete opposites . ON TO THE KID WHO SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE CHAMP IN THIS CLASS . ERDMAN ...HMM WELL I KNOW HE HAD MORE TRAINING AND PROBABLY BETTER SCHEDULES THAN THE REST HERE MAYBE MORE OF ALL THE EXTRAS THAN ANYONE IN THE TOURNAMENT .BUT .....YOU CANt QUIT FOR A YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL WRESTling fOR WHATEVER REASON. ,You can't quit doing what got you there and you can't do the stuff your not supposed to do to be A True super Champion You have to remain. Hungry .To me BINDNER wether you agree with what he says lol or not was in fact hungry I bet the kid woke up slept and thought about wrestling in his dreams and regardless of if people see him as DarthVader to some other kids Luke Skywalker he was Hungry he said he was going to do something and did it . And afterwards said some more lol He won period . SPARH HAD A BAD DAY OR TOURNAMENT FOR SURE ,BAD DAYS HAPPEN FOR KIDS WHO DO NOT HAVE AS MANY ROUGH DAYS BEFORE HAND .GOTTA DO THE EXTRAS IF YOU WANT TO BE KING. WELLS AND MOORE CONTINUE THEir GREAT BATTLES AGAIN SOME STRANGE CALLS TO ME IN THE MATCH BUT I WOULDNT CALL FOUL BECAUSE IT'S DISCRETIONARY.Two years in a row Wells remains behind Moore in the ranks but placers higher at state this year winning the head to head after losing at regions to Moore hopefully they separate classes so both can win titles in some other class and can live with a draw as far as their wrestling dual. YOST AND KARTER KETCHAM.WOW 8TH AND SEVENTH GRADE CHAMP AND PLACERS NICE FUTURE FOR KY THERE.SEEN KETCHAM AT OPEN MATS AND STUFF FOR YEARS.WORD TO AND FROM THE WISE ,You live in the county do as you do not what those around you do . There's a reason. A seventh grader can place at state and others fall short ,Hey let's party smoke some weed drink a few lol leaves you crying in the stands surrounded by crying family members and and your teammates watching in the stands before state begins or setting at home .A seventh grader doesn't care about weed booze opposite sex for the most part he cares about being a champ . YENTER DOMINATED A CLASS THAT WAS HURT A BIT BY INJURIES BUT EARNED AND DESERVED IT HE GOES THE EXTRA MILE .HIS FATHER/PARENTS GOES THE EXTRAS MILE , IF YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO BE STUDS DO NOT LEAVE IT UP TO THE COACHES, CAMPS OFF Season. Wrestling and discipline and morals make champions . UNION WAS THE STUFF .AND WOULD HAVE WON HANDS DOWN NO MATTER WHAT REGION THEY WOULD HAVE CAME FROM. THE OLDHAMS STEPPED IT UP IT WAS THEIR TIME. WOODFORD ALTHOUGH ANNOYING TO WRESTLE BRINGS ENERGY TO THE THE TOURNAMENT THEIR FANS ARE GREAT AS ARE THEIR TEAMS I SURE THEIR KIDS ARE PROUD AND GET SUCH A BOOST FROM THEIR FANS .UNION DOES PRETTY MUCH THE SAME BUT IF I HAD ANY MORE KIDS AT STATE AND THEY NEEDED A BOOST ON THE FLOOR WOULDNT IT BE COOL TO WRESTLE FOR WOODFORD .WOW LOVE THAT STUFF EVEN THOUGH I WANT TO THROW ROCKS AT THEIR FANS AT TIMES.HAHAHA

For all of those that booed me out of the gym during the match and podium you should learn some class from angel. Never have i wrestled someone with so much class. For all that doubted, and booed me. I got the last laugh. Learn some class. On to college i go. And i wish the best of luck to angel what a stud!. Thanks to all of the coaches that habe helped to get me to where i am today. Your 138lb state champ, Aj bindner

I for one was completely floored by the amount of booing that was going on yesterday at the state finals. I am from a small school and have no support and very few fans so I love it when I hear the cheers coming from all the different sections of each wrestlers school. I CAN NOT understand why ANYONE would feel the need to boo at another wrestler. My son is friends with a lot of wrestlers from all different schools and we cheer them on as well as our son, even if they are in his weight class. Examples are the match between AJ and Angel. I know that each of these kids are good kids and they both worked hard to earn the state title, but there was sooo much booing going on that it wasn't fair to either of them. Would you want someone to boo at your kid just because he worked harder then his opponent and ended up beating him?? It is NOT right!! The Max and Hudson match was horrible as well, but when they were handing out awards and the whole Woodford team booed when they called Hudson name that was the most unsportsmanlike behavior I have ever seen!!!! I feel that Woodford owes Hudson and the Trinity school system an apology and every coach should talk to their fans and let them know that that kind of behavior will NOT BE TOLERATED!! Every wrestler that stood on that podium worked very hard for that spot and they DO NOT deserve to be booed at!!!!

WOODFORD County , a lot of schools with pride and love cheering on their kids year in and out at state ,Union Oldham And everyone else but let's face it Woodford has it their whole team and fans come to win and cheer on their kids .From the Chants to the blonde hair . Very impressive they should take their act on the road wherever Team KY goes and bring that to the rest of the Country And their team is decent too lol

Hi, my name is Caleb Canter. For those of you that do not know me, I graduated from LaRue County High School in 2013. I have been a huge wrestling fan my entire life and always will be. However, as I attended the state tournament yesterday, I was extremely disappointed to find that the finals had been lumped together with the rest of the medal rounds, and the face off had been done away with entirely. This is absolutely disrespectful to the kids that worked so hard to make their way to the finals. Those kids deserve to be honored separate from all the other wrestlers in the state, as they have rightfully earned that position. As soon as I realized what the KHSAA had decided to do, I looked up the emails of the representatives (who we will not name) that made the decision, and sent an email asking for an explanation as to why it was done this way. I received a response almost immediately, and feel very inclined to share this information with the rest of the wrestling community. Shown below is the email I sent and the response I received. Please take the time to read through both emails as I would like for everyone to completely understand the situation before we take our next steps. My original email: Hi, my name is Caleb Canter. I have been involved with Kentucky wrestling since I was born in 1995. Wrestling has been a huge part of my life and I am concerned about the path the sport is taking in our state. I'm writing this email from my seat here in the Alltech Arena as I watch this lackluster "state finals." I am extremely disappointed in the format of this year's finals, and I am seeking a legitimate explanation as to why the biggest match of the season is less exciting than the finals of any given tournament throughout the season. Because I honestly can't think of a single reason why things are happening the way they are. I understand, or at least I hope, that you are not the only ones that have made the decision to format the tournament this way. However I am sure that you are able to fix the issue. If you are not convinced that this is an issue, you can ask any fan in attendance and they will tell you otherwise. I would even be willing to go as far as creating a petition to have signed for you to see just how many people are upset at the direction our state finals have gone. I'm sure when you read this you will likely write me off as a random upset 21 year old, and ignore my request for an explanation. But I urge you not to do so, because I know that I speak for the entire Kentucky wrestling community in what I am saying to you. In the future I hope that you will allow these high schoolers to earn the respect and honor that they have worked so hard for. Thank you for taking your time to hear my message. Caleb Canter If you would like to discuss the issue further I would be more than happy to do so! Feel free to give me a call The Response I Received: Thanks for sharing your thoughts. As someone who likely has been involved in this sport since before you were born, I know that change in anything dealing with this sport is seldom unanimous. As I sit here tonight we have received several extremely positive comments from coaches, parents and fans of the 3rd through 8th place wrestlers thankful for the change rewarding their son, daughter or wrestler's year long commitment even though they didn't finish in the top two. There have been some who would like to move the quarterfinal round and others would like to end earlier tonight. All of that is the function of our staff evaluating the conduct of the event going forward. The state association and its mission is to make decisions that are student friendly for the most students, not simply the elite level. If the elite level was the sole purpose, many team championships and individual events would involve only the elite or those from the urban areas where they are perceived more athletic or brackets would be seeded, etc. But that is not the purpose. It is about recognizing students across the board regardless of ability. In order to ensure continued participation in sports, such as wrestling, that struggle in many states maintaining optimal support. Since the time of your referenced year, participation in the sport has nearly doubled in terms of schools and much of that is properly attributed to changing both the culture of the sport and format of events to include more kids. And that will continue to be emphasized. So while those that want no change ever are likely disappointed with any change, others continue to welcome evolution. This association will continue to manage it events in the manner that the staff feels is the best for the continued evolution of the sports and activities and that may in fact mean even more change in the future. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. Sent from my iPhone Blame all typos on Apple auto-incorrect I do realize that both of these emails are extremely lengthy, but I ask that you at least take the time to read through the response email so that you can fully understand the decision that was made. I am thankful that the KHSAA took the time to actually read and think about my comments, but I am extremely unsatisfied with the justification for the way things were done. That is why I am going to see that it is fixed. While the KHSAA is operating in a manner that they believe is what the wrestling community desires, I am sure that they are mistaken. Therefore, we as an entire wrestling community must present our opinion to the KHSAA. The first thing I will ask of you is to sign the online petition to have the finals revamped into all that they should be. You can find this petition at the link shown below. https://www.change.org/p/kentucky-wrestling-kentucky-wrestling-state-finals?recruiter=492947154&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink Please take the time to sign as well as share the link with your friends and family that may have an opinion on the matter. Secondly and most importantly I am going to ask for you dedicated members of the wrestling community to write a short personal statement or letter to the KHSAA about why you think the finalist deserve to be honored more so than the rest of the medalist. I do understand that this is asking a lot of you, but it is my opinion that your written out thoughts are worth much more than your signature on a petition. I hope to receive letters from all possible sources, including children, wrestlers, coaches, officials, parents, and fans. Once you have written your letter to the KHSAA, please email it to me at caleb.canter@uky.edu. After I receive your notes I will print them off and personally deliver them to the KHSAA office. I also ask that you please remain respectful and professional throughout your entire statement, that way we can present our opinions to the KHSAA in a positive manner. While I do not wish to discount any one of your opinions and would love to receive letters from each and every one of you. I believe that the testimonies of wrestlers who found success at the state level but never managed to reach the finals, will be found most convincing, and I ask that you please make sure those people see this message. I also would love to hear the voice of those that support the way finals were done, and would be more than happy to include your statements when I deliver our messages to the KHSAA. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this lengthy post. I hope that we can find a way to rise up together and see a change made, so that these kids that work so hard can enjoy the respect that they earned. Caleb Canter Feel free to email me with any questions or ideas. Caleb.canter@uky.edu

Hey guys I love your support and I'm excited to hear all of your opinions. However, I must say that I'm not looking to create a big long thread on this website talking about how terrible everything is. As we will just frustrate ourselves and accomplish nothing. Instead I'm asking for you to seriously and professionally write out your thoughts. That way I can take them to the KHSAA and read it with them, to hopefully show them that they are not operating inside of what the vast majority of the wrestling community wants. Thanks for the help!

I don't think KHP is the issue even though I think it is ridiculous you had to pay $5/day to park. I was told the KHSAA wanted to run the round of championship that was wrestled on Saturday morning Friday night but the coaches wanted to get out of there early. Also was it necessary to have a 2 hour break? No! If they wanted to clear the arena if done correctly can be cleared out in 30 minutes. While that is happening you start setting the mats up. In my opinion, if they wanted to keep the way they did it (I hated this way) they should have moved 3 mats to the center of the arena and wrestled 3, 5 & 7 then wrestle championship match on the center mat because people where Union & CC fans were sitting were always away from the championship mat, put it in the center where it should belong. Also it took 1 hour to do 3 weight classes.

I love the State Wrestling Tournament. I love watching young competitors put it all on the line to achieve more than anyone expects, to lift up their respective teams, to prove something either to themselves or to others. Wrestling exemplifies hard work, sacrifice, commitment, and tenacity. The KHSAA has apparently committed to dishonoring all of these virtues. The format for the finals was ghastly. It took twice as long as it should have (the opposite of what was intended), the highlight wasn't on the finalists, the medal ceremony for each weight occurred moments after one of the soon-to-be podium dwellers lost his final match of the season. There was no time for athletes to collect themselves before being called to stand in front of the entire crowd. Champions had no time to hug their parents or savor the spotlight. This structure was the ANTITHESIS of what a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP should be. Now, with that said, Dallas Ochsenbein's duck under in the finals made all the KHSAA bull crap worth it. I want to relive that moment over and over again.

The KHSAA offices have proven over and over on multiple occasions they are unwilling to hear any type of detractors. If anyone really wants change it will take the following: Email/ call members on the board of control, this group effectively keeps Julian and Mike accountable to the schools. You can find their emails at this link: http://khsaa.org/2015-16-khsaa-board-of-control/ Email/ call your State Representative, this is what it took to allow middle schoolers to wrestle varsity again and unfortunately quite possibly what it may take to get the championship out of the Horse Park and a proper ending. Lastly, contact your local Athletic Director, Principal, and Superintendent and ask for the help to fix what was the correct way to crown a state champion. Unfortunately politics within the proper channels will be the only way to make the changes everyone desires.

I did not see what exactly happened even though it was on the mat right on front of me. People around me were saying he was choked out. Others said he tapped. Either or, if he was unconscious at all - he should not have been permitted to continue. I did not see any penalty points awarded and therefore The Wayne County wrestler should have been awarded the victory as a medical default.

I like the set-up of the Indiana tournament (sectional, regional, semi-state), but like the full wrestlebacks of the KY State Championships. One year the no.1 and no. 2 in IN met to go to state in the semi-state because one of them lost in their regionals and the draw put them in the blood match. (Probably has happened more than that.) One sat in the stands and the other was state champion. Full wrestlebacks throughout their state tournament series would have helped, but those folks know what they are getting when they participate. You either win or you may get that kind of draw.

Your post is full of flaws whoever you are? Just because you beat someone doesn't necessarily mean you worked Harder as you stated ? I doubt Woodfords Coaches like seeing their guy lose by a point in a match with 1 escape each and a discretionary call awarding a point for a push out or whatever it was and no TD.They would not scold their fans for booing ,They were not Booing Heidorf so much as the call nor am I being negative towards either wrestler .I have seen state titles change of. Discretionary calls before ref won't call stalling kid loses by 1 to a kid he beat easily and training ed harder than before but had wrestled lighter than most of the year and get booed fiercely by the crowd ,Kid never posted or said a word against anyone and repped the state like no one .of course his brother set everyone straight . Let's face it if a kid goes on social media of all sorts and says he's going good to whip everyone's but or would have came to tourneys and taken titles like candy from babies They could expect to be a Heel lol or to be the bad guy in the crowds eyes AJ is a Champ in my eyes and should be to everyone's he's just not a fan favorite plain and simple to most To me he played the game maybe stayed true to his true nature in the age of social media everyone pretty much knew what was being said all over . I don't feel Woodford owes anyone anything ,Heidorf and Trinity know Heidorf is a state champ and deserving Woodford feels the same for Andreoni. Perhaps a certain ref or two should NOT be reffing championship matches that's the real Hard truth that all schools agree upon . The best thing a kid can do when kicked when he's down is to get up and show out like the kid I spoke of earlier did go prove who you are and how good you are elsewhere regardless of who likes it .If Angel or AJ or Hudson or Andreoni want respect let Em keep earning it .Things happen kids get cheated now and then even on bigger scales fans are fierce and unfair so is life . Now 1 post person sorry if I seemed like a jerk but that's how I see it .

According to the results he didn't pin all his opponents. 126 was considered to be a "weak" class comparative to 120 or 138 and Ochsenbein although talented wasn't expected to win the title. Saul was considered as a "lock" as a state titlist. I can only speak for myself but Ochsenbein beat a former (and a future (Moore) champion on the way to his title. To me that is the definition of outstanding. Sheffer may have been more dominant but the award is for Outstanding. JMO. To each his own.

Joey is a warrior. There was no doubt that he was going to continue and ultimately put on a clinic. Like Woodford or not, their kids are warriors and their coaches and fans are extremely passionate! Hail Woodford!

First of all, kudos to Coach Roth. I've been around him for a number of years now and I can say with complete confidence that he is a man of class and honor. Truly one of the good guys!! That being said, I believe we need to change the format for who gets what trophy. In my opinion, why should the small school teams receive extra special attention? It's obvious small school teams can hang in there all the same with the big schools. My thought is, if a big school is your overall KHSAA winner, the first small school is the coaches association winner. If the overall KHSAA winner is a small school, your coaches association winner is from the large school division. Just makes more sense to me. Either that or just do away with the coaches association trophies all together. They really don't do anything else for US with OUR money anyways, so why do trophies either? The middle school association runs circles around these yo-yos!

Thanks to everyone that is responding to the petition! I love the comments! I really want to ask you guys to think about emailing me letters. I think that will be much more effective when presented to the KHSAA. I'm not looking for a long drawn out letter, a paragraph or two will be just fine! Caleb Canter

Unfortunately, Mike Barren and Julian Tackett could care less. The State Tournament isn't about the kids, it about the KHSAA and the showboat referees!!

The gesture was not at the crowd it was at Collins after he headbutted him twice and wrestled a very dirty match. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar or just plain delusional. I was disappointed to see it but man I can understand why he did it. Logan was up by 8 and had already hit a suicide cradle (not a throw) once for nearfall. He was foolish enough to do it again and the trinity kid posted, kicked out and capitalized on a not very smart decision on Logans part. Unfortunately that cost him a state title. He wrestled an extremely solid tournament other than the one mistake. Im proud of the way he sucked it up and went to work. I will say I was delighted to see AJ and the Bindner family finally get one. Well deserved. Aj wrestled brilliantly and I told him he carried himself very well throughout the tournament. The way Angel handled the loss was pure class. Also very proud of Hudson and elated for him and his dad finally winning a state title. Say what you want about the officiating. It was nail biter either way and Hudson beat him a second time. He earned that fair and square.

Always a rough crowd at All Tech even when a kid says nothing at all .congrats to you and Angel . Saw some strange calls and I think a ref decided who won between Heidorf and Andreoni.

Don't forget the three hour break...to get an extra ten bucks for the "medal round". NO FACE OFF, BOOOOOOOO! It seems like the movie Major League, with the owner that is generating a terrible cast of characters on her team, only to lose so much, she can move the team to somewhere else. I'm not sure how someone could try this hard to be obtuse. Where did this medal round and finals round thing/idea come from?

I would be proud of him as well ,There are a lot of kids who do multiple sports who do not have his tools or capabilities and a lot are spiritual and many loved as well with good gpas .As I said I enjoy talking to him he seems a great young man and I'm sure he is adept at numerous sports as many would be with his gifts .and I'm not Knocking his win or accomplishment I know he is loved and everyone is proud of him as they should be . BUT This is a wrestling forum ,Not track ,Not Football and not really a forum about ones beliefs or morals although they weigh in.Im talking about what could have been and what was expected .The heavys usually are Football players like Johnson last yr who won 2 .I just think everyone expected more of Young and he could have been a major player in the sport had he chose ,And I know a little about sports other than Wrestling My son competed against a national wrestling champ who now plays Football for Army was a 3 X state wrestling champion 3 X national champ who competed internationally in track and field .so football and track are not really reasons for not reaching ones potential .To each their own it all depends on what you want and want most .Congrats he was the clear Champ this year .
