Western Hills duals

Recommended Posts

I agree with pinned em all, this was a very well run event.  Started on time, very little (if any) wasted mat time, which resulted in an early departure.  A great day of wrestling with everyone having the opportunity for 5 matches.

With football and guys still getting down to weight it looks like all teams will be settling into their lineups for a few more weeks.

My top 3 highlights from the day:

1) Brownfield over Wolfe - hard fought match in a relatively close dual meet

2) Lee over Haynes over Tingle (over Lee) - these 3 looked very evenly matched for this early season meet

3) Demery over Carpenter-Fraser and Schneider - good day to follow up on a great state tournament

i agree as well it was well run and we got out way early, last year it started at 10 and ended at 12  14 hours of wrestling. this year was pretty good and i think everyone got at the least 3 matches if wanted. i wrestled 4 time and i am kinda bummed i didnt beat Terrance but at least i didnt get pinned like so many thought i would even i thought i would. But god the Demery over Carpenter-Fraser match was awesome Terrance won by one point 11 to 10

Are you sure of the score of the Demery and Fraser match? I thought Demery won by like 3 or 4 points. The Wolfe vs. Brownfeild match was fun to watch. Both wrestlers looked extremely strong for the first tournament of the year. Did you see the 130 from North Hardin? I think his name was Malcolm. He was 5-0 and pinned the Campbell County kid he wrestled...pretty impressive for a freshman. He also looked really strong for a 130 pound wrestler.

Thanks for telling me he was a freshman as well. I did not think he was some great wrestler. When I made that statement I was not trying to put down that kid I was just making a nice statement about the North kid. I just feel like he had a good day for a young wrestler and has a lot of potential.

The two Franklin County tournaments -- the WH Duals and the Capital City Classic at County -- have always been two of the best run tournaments I've had the chance to cover, so it doesn't surprise me this year wasn't any different.

Coach Pikul is a stand-up guy and a young coach who will soon make his mark on the sport.

i think we should forgive billy we all make mistakes and he realizes what he did was wrong..

All in all it was not a very big deal and billy is a good guy..

Same thing happened last year at State Duals. We thought that Cambells' 160 was Brownfield and I thought "Wow. Choate just ran through that kid." When the kid turned out to be a J.V. kid.

And we can't hold it against Billy that he eats at Arby's. Many of us have been guilty of this in the past so lets not points fingers. Let's just not make this a habit, Billy. Ewww...

I would like to comment about the stalling tactics of Lee vs Haynes.  Lee did a pretty good job of keeping his points above Haynes for the win by stalling.  He might have won fair and square by wrestling like a "man".  I watched the NH coaching staff try to argue this point but it fell on deaf ears.  Usually the NH coaches will take calls instride but to see them try to argue about a wrestler stalling, then there should have been a true call.  Im not saying Haynes would have won but at least he would have had a fair chance.

Im just saying it will be a good match up when they wrestle again.  I'm going for Haynes over Lee

Patti - i agree with the stalling call.  Jake Lee was stalling, no question about it (in my opinion).  You can probably guess by my name who i'm going for.  I will say this, with all due respect to Haynes, Haynes should let the refs do the reffing, the coaches do the coaching, and him do the wrestling.  His coaches were rightfully protesting stalling...that's their job.  Haynes was raising his hands in the air begging for a stalling call (at least 3 or 4 times).  I don't know of many refs who will turn right around and award a stalling call for a kid who is asking for one.  Justified or not.

Like i said, no disrespect intended to Haynes - he's a tough wrestler, but I don't think many refs will call a stalling when a wrestler is waving his hands asking for one.  They don't even seem to respond too much when coaches are screaming for one!  ;-)

Patti041104, Grow up! I also saw the Lee vs Haynes match and have a very different opinion then yours. I saw one kid wrestling and winning and one kid losing and whining. Wrestling is for the mat, acting is for the theatre. Personally, I prefer good sportmanship during the match. If a wrestler is losing, they should work hard to score, not pander and whine to the ref that their moves aren't working against their opponent. I felt Jake Lee wrestled like a "man" and feel your comment questioning his gender was entirely inappropriate and is deserving of an apology to that young man. If you respond in this manner during the first match of the season, honey, you will have a very long painful season. Now that you have demonstrated your weak side by making personal slams against a kid, why don't you now demonstrate your strong side and apologize to that young man for questioning his manhood!

Idated.... u r right.  I as a parent should not say things like that and should lead by example.

I apologize Lee for questioning your wrestling and manhood, I kno that u r a great wrestler and when u two meet again it will be another great match.  I hope that u and your team accept my apology.

AND u r right bout Haynes and the attitude that he showed at the end of the defeat and THAT will the first time and last time he will ever show an attitude like cause he did not show a wrestlers control.  I am not goin to comment further on this.

All the wrestlers did a good job, little misunderstanding here and there but thats life and the boys have to deal with it.

Good luck to ALL the wrestlers throughout the year.

Alright, here is my take on the Lee vs. Haynes match as an unbiased bystander who did not see the match.  Lee may or may not have been stalling, but why was Haynes down in the scoring anyway?  Lee had to have been doing something at least early on in the match to have a scoring advantage.  If Haynes was ahead in the scoring or at least tied then the stalling becomes obsolete.  If he is ahead then Lee has to force the issue and stalling does not come into play.  I always tell my wrestlers if you go out and wrestle aggressive and get up in the score, then the other wrestler is forced to wrestle and not stall.  If he does choose to stall, who cares, you're up in the scoring and he is only hurting himself.  Again, this is just my take on the situation with no malice intended towards any wrestler or fan.  Hopefully the 2 will get to meet again and who knows, the outcome may be different the 2nd time around.
