2007 Elementary State

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to take the time and thank everyone involved in this years tournament.  It was one of the best ran tournaments that I have ever attended.  Over 350 kids and done by 4:00, WOW.  I heard no complaints about anything.  You guys really stepped it a notch on this one.  BIG THANKS        :-D

Pat Lee and the Conner team truly did an outstanding job organizing the event. I just wanted to thank everyone.  I k now how important the event is to the wrestlers and their families.  All the workers put in a great deal of effort to keep things organized and moving right along.  Thank you all!!!!!

I would first and foremost thank Stan Martin for his contributions to the Elementary State Tournament.  Yes it was held at Conner, but we all know what Stan did to make this tournament happen.  I also would like to say congratulations to the Ryle Raider Youth Wrestling Team for becoming 2006-2007 Elementary State Wrestling Champions.

Stan is the Raider youth coach.  Stan, Pat and others headed up the tournament together.  Both of these gentlemen should get an "atta boy" and a pat on the back.  Running tournaments can be a major pain in the butt.  Sure, There are always complaints and mistakes, that goes with the territory, but I think overall, it was a huge success.  My hats off to them.

Congratulations to all the participants and placers at the tournament.  The level of competition is getting better each year.  Congratulations to Ryle for the big team win!  Congratulations to our kids who finished in 2nd place this year--look out Ryle we want the title back next year!!!!  Seriously, all the wrestlers are to be congratulated for their hard work and good showing--it was a good tournament all the way around.

A big thanks to Stan and Pat for all the work they put into the tournament--as well as all the boosters and helpers they had--they worked hard to run a smooth tournament--nich job guys!

I would like to give a special thanks to all of the kids who refereed. There was a lot of pressure to do well and they stood up to the challenge! They were very good under the gun! Two of our boys from S.K. did an excellent job. Thanks Dusty and Luke!

Stan, Pat, Lori, Barbara, Frank and everyone else who did all of the hard work to make the best state tourney yet, Thank you too!

The icing on the cake for me was to see three Northern Kentucky teams finish in the top four! Simply because you all worked so hard to make it successful and it gives us good competition to make our program better.

It was a little unorganized, the matches could have been set up better, and some of the refs were suspect, but overall it seemed like a pretty good tournament.

You must have not been to many tournaments here in Kentucky.  This tournament was a gem compared to most. :-D

No, that was my first tournament here actually.  I'm not originally from here and that was my sons first tournament (he's in K).

So now that you mentioned it I must ask.  If that was the best what seems to be the problem?  The matches seemed to be the biggest confusion.  None of the kids really knew where they were at or when they were up it seemed unless they called their name over the speakers.

Just tossing out things here about what I'm used to seeing.  First each age group has a name like beginner, novice, etc.  That makes it a little easier IMO then just saying 00-02, 98-99, especially for the kids.  Then rather then just mixing them all together kind of go in order by age and weight and just call them down.  Call down beginner 45, 50, 55 down to the (wrestling room) pair them up, tell them what number mat they are on, and have a runner take them to that mat. Then once those matches start getting done call down beginner 60, 65, 70 and so on.

Anyways I'm sure a lot of people know that, just throwing out some ideas so they continue to get better and run more smoothly.

Calling 350 kids down in groups would not work.

Having brackets posted with mat assignments is the way to go.

Every wrestler will no where they are and parents no where to set up the fan club.

Wrestling is not easy to organize and as you attend tournaments in the future you will learn that this State event at Conner was done very well.

mouse - i wouldn't call this the best, and yes we could have done some things better.  i think once the young wrestlers in this state start going to more and more tournaments, they will know what to expect and you will see less confusion.  i've been to tournaments where they call the kids down to the mat, and we ran our border wars qualifier like that last year.  i think that causes way more confusion, especially consider when kids go to the restroom, or sometimes kids fall asleep in the stands, or they just can't hear clearly over the noise in the gym.  also some names are hard to pronounce, so you're sitting here calling over the speaker a name but you mispronounce it so badly, the kid doesn't recognize he's being called to the mat.

i've seen some youth tournaments in ohio that are ran very well that don't use a bout system...but the kid has to sit right by the mat all day and they are paired up on the spot by a person at that table.  this is great if you have a big enough gym to allow for this, but we do not at conner.  especially with how many kids were at the elementary state tournament.  by using a bout system, kids can sit in the stands and come down to the mat as their bout number is approaching.

Mouse;

A wrestling room?  Most schools in Ky don't have one of those.  I do like the idea of giving each age group a name.  The year thing can get confusing.

Overall I thought it was ran well.  "Grappler-of-new" (Jr). just stayed next to the mat he was to wrestle on until he was finished.

YOU NEED TO KEEP ALL KIDS ON ONE CHARTE NOT 2  HAVE REAL REF. NOT KIDS{THAT TRY TO HELP KIDS THEY KNOW} KEEP EVER ONE AWAY FROM THE TABLES AND MATS.

I'm not new to wrestling.  I wrestled from the time I was 5 to 17 and have been to 100's of touraments in folkstyle, freestyle, and greco.  That is how most tournaments are ran and they do indeed work.  Plus it gets rid of the problem of having a bunch of little kids hangin around a mat all day when it could sometimes be an our or 2 between their matches.

You go to a big high school or college tournament and they pretty much go through them by weight.  This is the same thing basically but you are also going by age division as well.

In my example you really don't have to call out kids by name.  Just the division and weight.  Every kid should know what weight they are in and in most cases it gets written on their hand as well.  If they don't report then you could call them by name.

I'm sure as well the longer the programs go and more experience the little bugs will get worked out.

Well I just said wrestling room in this case because that is what they had at Conner where they were doing to announcing from.  Could be any area where they report, a wrestling room, stage, room off of the gym, etc.

Indiana just had their Folkstyle State Tournament two weeks ago.  They had a total of 790 wrestlers and finished in one day.  Their system seems to run well.  They go by the USA wrestling guidelines of Pee-Wee, Bantam, Midget, Novice, etc.  They give each match a bout number and call you by division, weight and bout number and tell you what mat to go to.  They also will announce the wrestlers names.  The wrestler listed at the top of the bracket is to report to the head table to pick up the bout card and take it to the assigned mat.  At no time did we have to wait for a long period of time once at the mat.  There was not a ton of people standing around a mat.  Our only complaint was that they completed this tournament in 1 day and our son had wrestled 8 matches in one day.  In the past, this has been a two day tournament and we would like to see it go back to that.

This does sound like a well ran tournament.  I am still not a fan of making announcements over the intercom...but the bout system seems to work great.  At the elementary state, we had a different set of bout numbers per mat.  Most tournaments I've seen ran there is 1 series of bout numbers for the whole tournament.  When this is the case (such as at the Ky m.s. state tournament) I like the bout board that Larue County uses the best.  For anyone that has not seen it, it's a big grid that looks something like this:

Mat #WrOD15

1159

22610

33711

44812

You read this like bout 1, is now wrestling on Mat 1, bout 5 is on deck...etc.  This board is viewable from anywhere in the gym.  Once the tournament gets running it runs very smoothly.
