Everybody always talked about how Johnny was untouchable and now the torch has been passed on to Mason. Nobody has even given thought to anyone else having a shot. Sorry stiches, but I don't quite rise to level of excitement you describe. Certain comments need to be taken into consideration. There are many variables which must be in place for a wrestler to become a champion. Some but not all are: physical attributes, such as speed, quickness, strength and athleticism; good health the weekend of the tournament, DESIRE to win, and willingness to train hard. I am only aware of John having health issues this year as he apparently has been plagued by injuries. Perhaps this may change a person's opinion as to his chances of winning state this year. I can not or will not comment on anything else about John because I simply do not know and I won't speculate. He has earned my respect by his previous accomplishments. I will say this with great certainty: IF IF IF, all of the variable described above are in place, John will win state at 160, IMO. I remember John beating an excellent wrestler, Cooper, in the finals John's sophomore year. He easily won the class last year as a junior. He has remained undefeated since a freshman, despite, wrestling in upper classmen dominate weight groups. Ervin is a great wrestler, no doubt about it! But remember, he was losing to Goldsby throughout most of the match at last year's semi finals. A two time state finalist, Cooper, had a career ending injury in the regions the week before and Cooper could have very likely rewritten history at 152 last year. Ervin is very good but just not as tested as John. Ervin may be better than John this year? But if all things other nonphysical variable are equal, John has the raw athleticism that few possess and would win 160.Win or lose, even if John never steps foot on the mat again, he is the man at 160 for this generation!
