Middle State Surpises or Shockers

What were the biggest upsets or shockers of the tournament. I think one of the biggest shocks came in the 82 lb. weight class with Wiley (defending state chanmp) finishing 6th after being pinned by Kline of Trigg County.

Buckman at 131...he got 2nd but they said it was only his 2nd year wrestling.  The 150 Champ Smith also surprised me.  I was more surprised by the pick for MOW.

You've got to throw the 150 pounder from Elkhorn (Darius Bucerzan) into the group as well. First year wrestler placing third at State in one of the heavier weight classes is real impressive.

I think the 165 lb class was a huge shock. Nelson had a heck of a season winning districts and regionals undefeated,  but injured his hip in the 3rd match at state and was basically out of it after that. But never fear he is under doctors care and he will be back next year bigger and better and I see a state championship in his future.

Glad to hear that...I hate that his hip injury knocked him out, especially after having the season extended 3 weeks because of the cancellation.  I hope to see some great wrestling from him in the future.

I think when jones beat lewis at 124 was a surprise. The ref called a pin when they was rolling.

Hansgen 140 from Crosby.  Really got messed over in his first match due to sub par wrestling, horrible officiating, and a clock error.  Wrestled all the way back for 3rd, beating Ball in the consolation finals.  Ball was supposed to be the man to beat for the weight class.  Did I mention Hansgen was a first year wrestler.

why would u be suprized? mitch rush got beaten by a 6th grade in the finals i think he should have gotten it dont u? and that was mitch's second loss to him......tyler is well deserving of the mow

Thank you BAZER82! Not only is Tyler Frankrone a 6th grader, but most of his competition has been wrestling anywhere from 5-8  years. This was Tyler's 3rd year!

Walker Keaton at 140, didn't get to wrestle due to knee injury, dominated State Champ Coleman at District and Region taking first, both times.  Too bad he didn't get to wrestle and become the state champ as well.

Thanks, we are headed back to the Orthopedic specialist tomorrow. I know he feels like he let a lot of people down and he is working hard to get well and make amends.

Don't get me wrong, he definitely out wrestled Coleman both days. 12-4 was the score in both the Districts and Regionals. You make it sound as though Coleman wasn't even competitive though. The score on both occasions was much closer through the first two periods. Keaton definitely finishes stronger and is why he won both times. Signs of a very strong wrestler. I wished he would have been able to wrestle at State. I look forward to seeing him and Coleman both wrestle in high school.

"In the overtime our youth shot in and had the leg the other youth was on top of him in a pan cake over the hips.  The youth was given two.  I question the official he told me that it was two when the youth was over the under youth hips."

That's the one I thought you wanted to comment on.  Look JCB, it was clearly a takedown.  It wasn't even close.  I was mat side and saw it.  He had clear control on the takedown.  Your wrestler ended up on his stomach.

Were there some missed calls and bad ones?  Yes.  But overall the officiating was pretty solid.  I will say it was a lot better than what we got in Northern KY all year.

Let me start by saying the officiating was decent for the most part, but there were a couple officials who where sub par.  I have one official in mind that stood out, and if you were there you know who I am refering to.

I wrestled in KY, officiated for three years (middle and high school), and have coached for two years now.  I understand it is a tough job and that there are not a ton of great officials, but there should be better officials for that level of competition including HS state officials. 

Because of my experience as an official I will generally side with an official when it comes to dealing with the pressure of a 10 hour day of wrestling....With that being said, there was a match that I believe influenced who the eventual state champion would have been.  I'm not going to get into all of the mistakes made or name names but this wrestler lost his very first match partially due to officiating mistakes and had to wrestle all the way back to place third....which he did.  I believe he was the only wrestler there that had to go through that process.  The kid deserved better than what he got.

You can get the best refs in the state but they will still miss calls. There is know way coaches will be happy about the  way refs call matches. Maybe coaches should be held to a higher standard, if you think the ref made a wrong call and the other coach agrees with you then the call could be over turned. I don't think the ref would mind it would be on the coaches shoulders then. They do admit they miss some calls and would like to make sure every wrestler is given what they have earned. The other way is to have two refs on every mat like they do in the finals this would minimize bad calls.

I completly agree with holding coaches to a higher standard.  When I officiated I had no problem with ejecting coaches if they were out of line.  I ejected one of the coaches that I coach with now from King of the Bluegrass a few years ago.  Coaches have to treat the officials with respect no matter the circumstance.

Coaches confering with each other on the mat to over turn a decision iby an offical isn't happening.  Neither is two refs per mat unless its the finals.  It's not cost effective.  Most coaches will accept a decision be it close or not if the call is right, so its not about coaches never being satisfied.  And, yes, every official makes a mistake.  A good official corrects the mistake if possible or admits when he has made a mistake and learns from it.  The state tournament is not where you go to learn.
