Ranger123 43 Report post Posted August 11, 2006 Yes, that is very interesting to see. I guess it shouldn't suprise us that many of these same guys are ending up on the medal stand in Frankfort. Just taking a quick look at this, I came up with the following:Medals awarded at state tournament = 112 (8 for 14 weight classes)Seniors who won medals (too old to be in 2003 MS) = 55Move-ins or kids who started wrestling in HS = 1 (that I know of)That leaves 56 medals for the kids who were able to participate in the 2003 MS state. 32 (almost 60%) of the kids on that list won medals this past season, including 10 state finalists and 5 state champs. So is you are looking for some underclassmen that might step up look at the 2003-2005 MS state tournament results. Looks like they are a pretty good predictor.BUT it also leads to another question. What happened to some of these kids? For example:75 lbs J Ducker of Gray, N Laughlin of Oldham Co92 lbs B Neal of Woodford (how did he get so big?)110 lbs M Parrish of Elkhorn, J Bradford of Gray122 lbs J Vaught of Eastern128 lbs Z Byrne of Oldham Co134 lbs J Thompson of Inez150 lbs A Root of Whitley Co, C Temple of Anderson Co172 lbs J Johnson of Eastern, J Poteet of Larue Co195 lbs D Robinson of Woodford Co, W Jude of Inez230 lbs M Sullivan of Moore, C Hornback of Larue Co

Happy Pappy 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2006 Boy, I remember that day very well...very long and very crowded. The fans sat on one side of the gym so they could have more room for mats. After all was said and done, I was sure one....Happy Pappy! The two kids from LaRue never pursued much wrestling after Middle School. I just don't think that they thought much of Canter's meatgrinders and decided other sports (or none at all) were better choices. There was even some controversy after that tournament over the kids who wrestled varsity and middle school at the time (Banks esp. and Wheeler) and even some talk about stripping their titles. Thanks to Coach Bankemper (who I greatly admire BTW), that did not happen. With all of the controversy at that time, I think the ultimate decision worked out for the best as you now see multiple numbers of kids doing that especially at the smaller schools, and (I think) it has made us as a state more competitive. But at the time, there was a lot of negativity (as well as support) for the issue on Bluegrass Preps. The numbers Ranger has come up with proves the point as well. It would be interesting to see the numbers from last year's MS State and HS state to kind of get a guage on where this stands today.
