I hesitated to post, because I know I am by far not the smartest berry in the bunch. Just wanted to give some help if possible.

One way to solve the 9-24 brackets is a pool to bracket tourney. I know that is not how the boys do it, but they do it in the Olympics. A 24 girl weight class can be done with no 5 match rule problems. Over 24 that's another animal.

I counted 9 teams with 20 from region 5.
Boone 3
Campbell 1
Conner 1
Cooper 3
HIghlands 6
Newport 2
Ryle 2
Simon Kenton 1
Walton Verona 1
But Nky is still behind on numbers.

Let’s be honest, they are the best team so isn’t every thing else just participation trophies? I get that it helps grow the sport and that’s awesome, but if a 1A school routinely beats everyone in the state doesn’t that show that there isn’t a reason to have 3 divisions?
You could argue St Paris Graham in Ohio (A division 2 school) would compete for the big school title every year.

Just visit any message board around playoff time, and you'll see plenty of calls to return to 4 divisions, or that things are "too watered down". Just like how so many constantly harp on the fact that Ky basketball is the best thing going because there is only one state champ.
I stand corrected (I don't really follow football). If it was 4 divisions then that's about 53 teams a division. Close to what wrestling has with 3.

Wrestling 135 teams 3 divisions. Abut 45 per division.
Football 211 teams (unless I missed one or two) 6 divisions about 35 per division.
How is this any different? Yet no-one seems to complain about football.

Call me old school but I liked it better when it was one tournament. You can’t tell me that a tournament with Union, PT, Great crossing, JC, Ryle, Walton V, Trinity wouldn’t have been better.
Its no different than football. Wouldn't it be better to see Trinity, Highland, Beachwood, St X. Mayfield, Boyle Co. and Cov. Cath. play it out.
If you return to one tournament then only 12-16 teams participate. The rest will have to try and find a place to wrestle and have less interest in the event.
-
I see both sides. I agree that it may seem watered down a little and restricting participation is not ideal. However the limitations of gym size and time restraints cause the restriction. If you move it to a 2 day tournament you would get less participation. If you move it to a larger venue then the cost rises dramatically. All aspects must me looked at. Sometimes a compromise must be made. I know in todays society we don't like compromise but that is how things expand and get done.
I remember many moons ago I was against the expansion of the state tournament to 32 participants, and placing top 8. I argued that it watered down the state tournament. I was used to only the top 4 medaling in KY. (yes I'm that old). It ended up that I was wrong, wrestling grew dramatically. (we only had about 70 teams when we started this)
Now when KHSAA finally decides to sanction girls wrestling then a qualifying event will be mandated. Until then, I believe as a community we are doing what is best, with the barriers we have.

Ok now I see the problem. The only complaint is that a team can only put one wrester per wt. class.
I personally am AOK with that. I don't like 2 participants from the same team on any level. They do it for middle school but it is not done for High school varsity.
If we want the girls to reflect the boys or vice versa then they need to be the same.
-
I think the first goal would be participation. We have to get numbers to a respectable amount.
-
I would say that a 2 day tournament would cause quite a few teams not to be able to compete. That would add another overnight stay for many teams.
-
Just curious:
Do we have any numbers on girls throughout the state?
I don't seem to see the numbers in Nky as I see in the rest of the state.
-
I would throw in Dusty Brown from Scott into the mix.
Maybe John Roth and Jason Moore from Walton. (Probably only if they could tag team)

So was this a varsity event? Do the matches go on the varsity record? If so this is no different than taking a loss for and injury default.

8 minutes ago, DrBaker said:It’s just hilarious that a jv loss is being counted as a varsity loss. It’s Larue, Caldwell, Ft Campbell, and Nelson that get screwed in the deal.
Now that does not sound right. Surely they did not take a JV tournament loss and count it against them on the varsity level.
I know don't call you Shirley.

Not sure what the over the top reaction is all about. So he is not ranked. How does that affect his wrestling. If anything it should be making him a better wrestler by not being ranked.
Before Rangers ranking another person did the ranking. I had a kid who never broke into his rankings. He had 4 losses in the season prior to state. Lost to the state champion 3 times, defeated many ranked wrestlers. It only sparked his desire to get even better. He lost in the Semi-finals at state in overtime. I would claim that him not being ranked made him a better wrestler throughout the year.
I understand as a parent you want your kid to get his due, but ultimately getting that medal around his neck at the end of the season is the only due that is worth it.
I have the utmost respect for what ranger does. He has to spend hours daily trying to sort through the results of every match a Ky wrestler. He does this with no compensation.

Tbagnky That was extremely insightful. I didn't know you had it in ya.
Seriously though that is absolutely correct. Regardless of what our children accomplish in athletics what really matters is what they take out of it. Hopefully something that will help them when they become adults and can pass onto their children.
I really hop this thread does not turn into some of the similar threads we had in the past.

I'm feeling some really bad deja-vu going on here.

Am I seeing this correctly? Is there no Ervin in the rankings this year? The last time there was not an Ervin in the state tournament was 2002.
Since 1977 there has been at least one Ervin at the Wrestling state tournament except in the years. 1978, 79, 83,84,86,87,88,89,95,96,97,98,99,00,01,02.
There are team that have not had as few years without a wrestler at the state tournament.

Never thought we would see that. Seems like the top teams are really separating themselves from the rest of the state. I think we will see a really close race between the top 3-4 teams this year.
In 1989 Trinity won the team title without a state champion. 3 runner ups and 7 total placers. 131.5 points (13 Weight classes)
in 1990 Trinity had 3 state champions with 7 total placers scored 136 points and was second to Campbell 158 pts, with 1 state champion and 10 total placers. (13 Wt classes)
The next closest team in 1990 had 91 pts.

Is there a way to remove last years tournaments?
It would be nice to have this years tournaments only on the form.
Coaches can then update the new year dates.
State Duals

I don't think it is dodging competition. I believe it is just the opposite. Giving up two weekends in a row and giving up your spot in two established tournaments you are involved in is a tough decision. Some of those teams may be in highly competitive competition out of state. Would Union give up their spot in Mater Dae (sp) or Father Ryan tournament? It's mostly hard on those boarder line teams. Those teams that may or may not make it year in and year out. It's hard enough to have one question mark on your schedule let alone two.
Just to be fair and to put my cards on the table. I am not a dual fan. Even when I was with a good dual team. I much prefer an individual tournament to a dual tournament. I will however fight to support the state duals, I believe it is a good venture.
