  1. I pulled some numbers from a few states.  There are dozens more examples of states in our participant range with multiple divisions, but I don't have time at the moment to go through it all.

    OK: 133 Schools - 4 Divisions, ID: 101 Schools - 4 Divisions, SC: 119 Schools - 4 Divisions, NM: 101 Schools - 3 Divisions, WY: 51 Schools - 3 Divisions.  On and on...

When I was younger I was all about less divisions, but my opinion is changing.  The state tournament will be watered down, but it WILL create more excitement for smaller schools and probably more excitement overall as well.  At the end of the day our kids aren't getting recruited from the state tournament so wrestling in the offseason is and will continue to be the key for kids wanting to compete at the next level.

Why are they considered “upsets”, then? Seeds matter to the fans. We as fans want to see Fix and RBY in the finals, by example. We as fans want to see who we feel are the best wrestlers wrestling in the significant bouts. Nothing wrong with that perspective. But, I doubt seeds have the same significance to those competing or coaching. If a competitor or coach puts a lot of stock into seeds, I feel like they’re misusing their energy to get prepared for the tournament. In any event, this wasn’t my point regarding the KHSAA.

Based on your last statement, it appears there are a lot of absurd wrestlers wrestling in national and state tournaments across the country this year. Some are actually winning, which is even more “absurd”, I suppose?

I think you're confusing seeds with rankings bud.

But for example if a kid from region 2 knows stud A from region 1 is gonna be on a certain side of the bracket then they may forfeit to 3/4 to dodge stud A. Especially when you know whose gonna be in the bracket. Takes the random draw out of the equation. It may be rare, but somewhere it will happen.

Your example doesn't work. The KHSAA set up the scenario where kids should forfeit to get a more favorable seed at semi state.  I assume both studs would win their region tournament and be separated.  If the second best kid in semi-state was a region runner-up then using 1&4 2&3 puts him on the opposite side as well.  If the second best kid was 3rd he would also be separated so no forfeiting shenanigans would be necessary using this format.  The ONLY reason to forfeit is if you knew the stud from the other region was upset.

If you seed the state tournament(I'm in favor of this) then you only seed the 1's, then separate 1&4 2&3.  It is REALLY not that difficult.

Seeds really are subjective, anyway.  In some cases, it's pretty clear who the best wrestlers are in a bracket and for fan's sake, we'd want them to only wrestle when something was on the line (semi's, finals, etc).  But, if the college national tournaments have shown us anything this year, it's that seeds really don't matter. #31 pinning #2 at NCAAs and multiple #20 seeds in the quarters, multiple major upsets in NAIA, etc.  The issue I have with the KHSAA isn't regarding the seeding (though I understand where others are coming from).  It's just not a hill I'm willing to die on.  The issue I have is the arrogant ignorance the KHSAA brings to a sport they know very little about with no motivation to learn.  The structure and senseless logic make for a bummer of an expensive postseason experience for everyone.

The examples you give are anomalies. OF COURSE SEEDS MATTER.  If you blind draw NCAAs you could get Fix and RBY in a quarter. Deiken and Hidlay in a quarter, etc. Upsets are not proof that seeds don't matter.  This year was extremely difficult to seed for several reasons, but saying seeds don't matter is absurd.

That's the other side people are not mentioning, the forfeiting in placement matches at regions in order to line up for a better chance at advancement at semi-state. It's lame but it would happen. The seeding criteria for semi-state is not perfect but it does allow some chance and rewards kids for their overall body of work for the season.

No it doesn't.  Seeding is for separation. If you use the 1v4, 2v3 model everyone who needs to be separated is.  The KHSAA really jacked this one up.

That would suck for those trying to hold their weight that long. Semi state would be held on Easter weekend, and state after spring break? You could keep things normal this year, move regionals to March 13th, and state on March 27th. If wrestlers aren’t part of the 15% capacity limit, you can find an accommodating venue(s).

You mean wrestlers would have to stay disciplined with their diet for a few more weeks? I don't see an issue.  And we don't wrestle on Sunday so I'm not sure why Easter is a conflict...

  7. In the last meeting Tackett suggested pushing our post-season in hopes that restrictions would not be so harsh.  Other states are doing this(OK & MO off the top of my head) and he seemed to be on board with the idea.  The following plan mirrors what MO is doing. If we keep our Region Tournament on March 20th, add a Semi-State on April 3rd, and have our State Tournament on April 17th venues will likely be at higher capacity, which would solve many of the problems we are facing. Again, Tackett suggested this, so I think getting a plan together that is similar will only benefit us when they make a decision.

Only thing I’ve heard is no out of state tournaments.

We are able to compete out of state, but the teams must be from bordering counties.

    • Kentucky teams may only participate in contests (at home or away) against KHSAA member schools in Kentucky, or those schools located in a county in an adjacent state (Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia, or Virginia) where the county in which that school is located is contiguous to Kentucky. (REQUIRED)

Seed meetings should go really fast anyway.  During the season seeding really does not matter.  Coaches need only send in their roster and records and go with it.  It drives me crazy when we go to a tourney and coaches are arguing over seeds.  Especially when its for a 4, 5, or 6.  Separate the best 2 and then go with it.

The only seeding that really matters is the post season seeds.  Make sure the best kids go to the state tourney.

Bad take...when you are competing as a team, which we do at tournaments, seeding is very important.  Records shouldn't be seeding criteria at all.  I fight for the 6 seed all the time.

Maybe you just haven't had a lot of success in seeding meetings?

I also made some revisions on the team dual standings as well. State Duals are coming up this weekend and it looks like Ryle is the team to beat. Should be some exciting team matchups and some championship level wrestling.

Thanks for doing these.  I enjoy looking at rankings.  I have a question about your team ranking though. Based on your individual rankings Ryle is ahead of McCracken at 5 weights, while McCracken is ahead of Ryle at 9 weights.  Neither team has a kid ranked at 92.  Maybe I'm missing something, but how does that make Ryle the team to beat?
