I pulled some numbers from a few states. There are dozens more examples of states in our participant range with multiple divisions, but I don't have time at the moment to go through it all. OK: 133 Schools - 4 Divisions, ID: 101 Schools - 4 Divisions, SC: 119 Schools - 4 Divisions, NM: 101 Schools - 3 Divisions, WY: 51 Schools - 3 Divisions. On and on... When I was younger I was all about less divisions, but my opinion is changing. The state tournament will be watered down, but it WILL create more excitement for smaller schools and probably more excitement overall as well. At the end of the day our kids aren't getting recruited from the state tournament so wrestling in the offseason is and will continue to be the key for kids wanting to compete at the next level.

Are these just high school?

I think you're confusing seeds with rankings bud.
-
Your example doesn't work. The KHSAA set up the scenario where kids should forfeit to get a more favorable seed at semi state. I assume both studs would win their region tournament and be separated. If the second best kid in semi-state was a region runner-up then using 1&4 2&3 puts him on the opposite side as well. If the second best kid was 3rd he would also be separated so no forfeiting shenanigans would be necessary using this format. The ONLY reason to forfeit is if you knew the stud from the other region was upset. If you seed the state tournament(I'm in favor of this) then you only seed the 1's, then separate 1&4 2&3. It is REALLY not that difficult.

The examples you give are anomalies. OF COURSE SEEDS MATTER. If you blind draw NCAAs you could get Fix and RBY in a quarter. Deiken and Hidlay in a quarter, etc. Upsets are not proof that seeds don't matter. This year was extremely difficult to seed for several reasons, but saying seeds don't matter is absurd.
-
No it doesn't. Seeding is for separation. If you use the 1v4, 2v3 model everyone who needs to be separated is. The KHSAA really jacked this one up.

State team race if format changes

It was suggested in the meeting by Tackett that there would be an additional weight allowance if the post season was pushed. -
State team race if format changes
GooglyMoogly replied to coachteater's topic in High School Wrestling
You mean wrestlers would have to stay disciplined with their diet for a few more weeks? I don't see an issue. And we don't wrestle on Sunday so I'm not sure why Easter is a conflict... -
State team race if format changes
GooglyMoogly replied to coachteater's topic in High School Wrestling
In the last meeting Tackett suggested pushing our post-season in hopes that restrictions would not be so harsh. Other states are doing this(OK & MO off the top of my head) and he seemed to be on board with the idea. The following plan mirrors what MO is doing. If we keep our Region Tournament on March 20th, add a Semi-State on April 3rd, and have our State Tournament on April 17th venues will likely be at higher capacity, which would solve many of the problems we are facing. Again, Tackett suggested this, so I think getting a plan together that is similar will only benefit us when they make a decision. -
We are able to compete out of state, but the teams must be from bordering counties. Kentucky teams may only participate in contests (at home or away) against KHSAA member schools in Kentucky, or those schools located in a county in an adjacent state (Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia, or Virginia) where the county in which that school is located is contiguous to Kentucky. Bad take...when you are competing as a team, which we do at tournaments, seeding is very important. Records shouldn't be seeding criteria at all. I fight for the 6 seed all the time. Maybe you just haven't had a lot of success in seeding meetings? -

Thanks for doing these. I enjoy looking at rankings. I have a question about your team ranking though. Based on your individual rankings Ryle is ahead of McCracken at 5 weights, while McCracken is ahead of Ryle at 9 weights. Neither team has a kid ranked at 92. Maybe I'm missing something, but how does that make Ryle the team to beat?
