I only based my opinion on KY High school results.

Sullivan is a good one, but still put Courney ahead of him. IMO

Murton was a stud but no Merritt or Carr of the 90's Merritt on accomplishment and IMO Carr better wrestler.

I'd place Carr over Merritt (just barely) because he did it over a range of weight classes. But they both are similar in this regard:  I've watched KY wrestling grow, expand and progress for 23 years.  The talent level now is soooo much better than it used to be.  Year-round training, parents being more involved, coaches travelling to camps and tournaments has made KY a better wrestling state and overall the level of competition has gotten exponentially tougher. But having said that these two guys in particular would still dominate and excel.  Can't say that for all the past champs but I watched those guys kick butt and I feel certain, when at their peak, they couldve competed with anyone this state has produced.

  3. Carr took a loss in Cliff Keen to Northwestern  Deaken 8-3 then knocked off Coleman from Purdue who's ranked top 10 to take 3rd place.  Went 5-1 for the weekend

Deaken was ranked #2 by Intermat and beat #1 Hidlay from NC St in the finals 6-2.    Ridiculously competitive weight class.

Winning with class. Learned it from his dad.

One of the classiest and most humble kids I've ever been around. A lot of people don't know what he went through as an 8th grader that season in KY but through it all he showed a level of maturity I have simply never seen in another teenage student athlete.  His success at this level was inevitable, not because of his bloodline, not because of his strength or speed, it's because of his character, which is beyond exemplary.

Someone else brought up Austin ..before me taking a knock I could care less who like what I say after that ..and yes he was beating theb3rd place guy most of his match and then lost to a guy well below his level because of an injury as I said hes listed as the starter but has been injured no need for any compassion none expected he could have quit after his fr yr and still accomplished more than anyone from ky ever has in the sport.

If your comparing naia guys and D1 .and saying somenare indistinguishable...maybe so but if your comparing levels well ..Elam did not place at Nationals at D1 and he just beat a 2 x NAIA nat champ .

Oh there is for sure some separation at the top I was just saying some of the NAIA top dogs placing above starters in D-1 programs is cool to see.

  6. What a huge showing by Reed.  Some of these NAIA and D-II heavies are indistinguishable from the D-1 guys. That's great to see.

The thread is about Reed vs Elam. Don't spend the whole time talking about another HWY that didn't place and may not be in the lineup anyway.  There is another thread for that already.  Also, I don't get ripping a guy for losing a spot or not dominating when you know good and well he is coming off an injury.  Ever been injured in your life?  It sucks. Maybe have a bit of compassion for a student athlete trying to rehab and recover. Ignore his dad.

  7. Great weekend of wrestling ahead.

SoCon released their seeds and Nathan Boston got the 2 seed at 141. Only one NCAA bid for that weight in SoCon.

But Ben Barton at 157 got the 1 seed!! Also only 1 bid.  Good luck to two KY wrestlers hoping to make their first NCAA tourney.

As someone who spent countless hours in Memorial Coliseum hoping to win the student ticket lottery for basketball games, those seats in there would be awful for two long days of wrestling. Unless they remodeled it in the past 3 years, I give that a hard no go just for that simple fact.

major renovations are planned.   They already installed a video board that's insanely big. parking would be an absolute nightmare. There just isn't any around there at all. They'd have to shuttle ppl from parking garages nearby
