I missed that. Thought it was the legal way, happened too fast. Stand corrected.

    Finishing on a highlight

I tried warning people. They have another one next year as well in the same position as Dalton was. Not saying he will win state but he’s good enough to be on the podium.

    That is plenty of space.

I was taught this move in 2004, and I have seen it used countless times since then. When I ref, that's an easy takedown and most of the time nearfall. It is legal, and also an awesome move. The legs won't be put in a position of danger. It isn't a hard slam to the mat. The offensive wrestler has is non-whizzer hand behind the knee closest to him, and the leg that is in the single leg is behind the other knee. Both knees of the defensive wrestler naturally bend the way they should, not hyperextending the opposite way. Every coach should teach this move to their team.

As someone who spent countless hours in Memorial Coliseum hoping to win the student ticket lottery for basketball games, those seats in there would be awful for two long days of wrestling. Unless they remodeled it in the past 3 years, I give that a hard no go just for that simple fact.

If you are talking about the first 5 point move Bates did, that was definitely legal. It was hit multiple times throughout the state tournament and it is a great way to get a takedown when an opponent has a single leg and you have a whizzer in.

I reffed mainly Chardon, Eastlake, Willoughby, Beachwood, Perry, Mayfield, and Mentor matches. It seemed like at the middle school events it was the same exact teams every time.

I spent the last three seasons before this year reffing in NE Ohio. We had to attend 6 of the 10 weekly meetings and the state mandatory rules meeting in October just to be able to ref post season. I went from reffing all levels in Kentucky for 7 seasons to mainly junior high in the Cleveland area with a few high school duals thrown in. The meetings were informative and brought up real match situations that happened locally the previous weekend (some of the refs there reffed Ironman and other big time tournaments). They chose a person each week to discuss a specific rule with a video presentation. They treated it like a second job, as you know they do get paid to ref. Kentucky should go back to implementing these mandatory meetings. With today's technology, even the rural areas can set up a video conference due to many refs in parts of the states living so far away and not so much centrally located like we were in NE Ohio where we were able to meet at a local high school every Monday night.

    tournament dates for 2019-2020

It throws a wrench in things for those that travel to out of state tournaments. Doubt Tennessee, Ohio, or Indiana will be pushing their seasons back as well. What was the reasoning behind the season pushing back a week later?

Looks like Union will be a one and done here. Most likely the Mater Dei Holiday Classic will fall on the same date.

Not going to say it will happen but they did put a bid in for it. They did this before Christmas.

It wasn’t called. Score stayed 1-0 Zane Brown lead. Little went for a desperation shot later and the rest was history. You think with two refs on the mat, one of the two would’ve ruled that a takedown.

Would you all consider this a takedown at the 2:07 mark? https://www.thegleaner.com/videos/sports/2019/02/17/highlights-union-countys-state-wrestling-championship/2901267002/

I heard Murray State was a real possibility. Owensboro Sports Center as well.

Rumors are true. It could still be back there but there are other venues that have sent in their bids already to host.

    Prediction Game

Even though you all went chalk with the predictions in the Report, you did say he could be the guy to outwrestle their ranking/position. I surely didn't see that big upset against TKC, but having watched Dalton all season showcase the funk like a miniature Ben Askren, I knew that kid was going to be a high placer. Ranked 8th for most of the season and dominated to a state title, this kid only had two losses in his first season as a varsity wrestler. One at the very beginning of the season to Rivera, and another to the former top ranked kid in Indiana.

I am not sure of the exact wording of the rule off the top of my head, but when I ref, if I see nothing happening for a good 5-10 seconds and you can tell no change of position is imminent (being a former wrestler, you can tell when something is about to happen) then you can call it. It is a judgement call for the most part, and definitely one that usually doesn't affect the outcome of a match. I did notice two other refs go up to the main ref after the 138 final and talk about something.

That trip back tilt was awesome. He almost pulled it off again. One side note, there was a stalemate called that was extremely questionable. Deck was about to hook Bates' leg and would have secured a takedown. The stalemate was called way too quick.

That put a smile on my face seeing that sportsmanship. Even though he beat my nephew first round, he made a new fan out of me (and my nephew).

    2019 state tournament firsts

My fiance who was attending her second state title thought it was amazing seeing all of the coaches out there rolling up the mats. She asked me if that was normal and I said I hadn't seen that happen before. Kudos to you all. We need an intervention to make these finals better. We can't have the Dungeon back, but this venue needs to go. I loved the four mat system, kids might not like making weight 3 days in a row, but it is easier to follow the matches that way.
