How many state duals have been cancelled because of snow, it always seems to snow on this weekend

Kentucky has made huge strides in wrestling since at a low in 1991. Problem is the nature of the beast like swimming. There is no real casual fans support. To have a successful team you wrestler your matches in all day Saturday events that the casual fans doesn't attend. Plus you add to the fact that football season doesn't end for most teams until November doesn't help with the sharing of athletes. Wrestling is very much a inner fraternity that requires sacrifice that the average person doesn't want to pay. As for finding good coaches, its hard to tell a young 20 something year old that might had a significant other or trying to start a family that his social life and family life is now limited. ( I can't count how many times I missed important family and friends events because of coaching) Like participating, coaching is a huge sacrifice for the love of the sport. For what makes our sport great also weakens it.

OK guys Ill take the rub, Like I say he left so no one would see him be unsportsmanlike. Sad that ref never officiated again after he realized he was wrong twice. Correct Goo I was the asst coach that found him in his boxers outside

With all the things going on with this years state tourney. People like me and GOO like to remember the fun parts of the state tournament. Personally as a guy who has wrestled, refereed, helped with behind the scenes and coached. Its been a fun 20+ years. Share some of your favorite non wrestling moments at the tournament. Also has anyone checked out that the KHSAA has posted tournament programs and brackets all the way back to 1965 And I always get the itch to coach again this time of year.

one thing I wonder and I'm sure he covered this base, How does the Head of education feel about a Tues/Weds tourney? I hate to see the boys in Frankfort weigh in.

garbage cans flew after he got dqed Commissioner/ Asst Comm usually is in charge of more than one sport. Thats why they have advisory committees .

Competitive opportunities/restrictions for teams awaiting STATE
bigedcoach replied to luvswrestling55's topic in 2015 Season
no, once regionals were started no more matches or scrimmages. Also going to a USA or AAU tournament during season is prohibited. Its in the state handbook -
GOO- a little side story that the people did not know about that, I found him outside stripped down to his boxers and he looked at me and said He just did want people see him get upset and do something unsportsmanlike like. Yeah it took away a second State Runner up trophy away after his team points were taken away. Not defending his actions but he was actually was sportsman like. All he really did was leave the gym so no one would see his temper and emotion. Never cursed, never got violent until he came back and found out he was DQed. The only thing he actually did wrong and the referee admitted that he made a mistake was the handshake and end of match procedure. He actually finished it by the rule book but the referee did realize the words of the rule accutualy 2 rules. Poor guy was a nice guy but never refereed again.

oh dont get me started on that GOO. was a good hurdle though. punctuated a good weekend for Louis Stout.

rjs - never been called a Nazi before but goofball and other colorful adjectives. Been cursed by Coach Krazegic, told to stay here while a Sheldon Clark fan goes gets his rifle. Canter/Paden accidentally threw/kicked a chair at me and a coach from Valley stood up in the middle of the bleachers in my own gym and preached to the crowd how we mathematically knew how we were going to win tournament and running the evil empire. So I just take things with a smile.

GOO , who posted all the old brackets on the KHSAA web site.

GOO these young bucks on this site don't understand do they. I remember at Atherton when the state tournament came to a halt because a coach ate a potato chip before the hospitality room was officially opened. Funny and that persons sons are wrestling in this years tourney.

Until you are an athletic administrator then you don't understand the challenges of running a complete program. Even though we have a passionate fan base, we still are at the next to the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to participation, attendance and general fans following. No programs in the fourth largest area of the state (Bowling Green). Our state finals only draw between 3-4k fans. At least with Mr. Tackett, we got the tournament out of Atherton, 32 man brackets, and a better wrestling committee that actually meets instead of of just listening to one or two guys that were way pass their prime. Don't blame the KHSAA on this decision. it's just bad luck and if only one kid had to miss out of wrestling in the state tournament because it was held while athletes were not allowed to travel because of weather then I really praise the decision. I know if this happened in the mid 80's, they would have just cancelled by order of the lady that damaged the sport the most (Alice McDonald, education overlord that made the state tournament in to a 8 man one day tournament) Yeah their are cons in how we do things in this state when it comes to wrestling but we came as close as you could in loosing our sport in 91/92 and with out Tackett listening to Parks, Bankemper, Powell, Coomes and other committee members then. we wouldnt be here.

only reason 3 and 4 are down is a numbers thing Fern Creek Trinity X and I think Doss are the only teams that fill full squads and with scoring to 8 places give them a real advantage in scoring in such small tournaments where there are teams with just 3 wrestlers. As for skill levels they are still at the same high standard. Fern Creek , X and Trinity will finish in the top 10 at state if not in the top 5 or 6, Doss will do well as will Manual, Moore and Male. So numbers may be down but quality is still there.

not enough hotel space in Morganfield for a state tournament.

Ill weigh in here, KHSAA made the right call. A hard decision had to be made and the pros out weigh the cons. You know wrestling is not going to overlap the Girls Sweet 16, and unlike "youth" events, most wrestlers travel by team bus, not parents because of liability. As for cutting weight, most kids are wrestling closer to natural weight than in the past. Actually this will probably raise the quality of wrestling because kids will get over injuries, bodies and minds will be fresh and will go harder. Unfortunatly the world is bigger than wrestling and we all have to fit in. Honestly we need to start later in the season, starting winter sports on the secon week of December and finishing on the second week of March but thats my crazy opinion and yes its because of football.
-
After the nasty ice storm of 2001 I think and they didnt miss a beat at the state tourney, this will be easy
-
KHSAA rules state its illegal, Its not like back in the old days when Jtown Waggener and Central would practice together or when Eastern and Fern Creek would practice together in the 90's.
-
JCPS kids are not allowed to practice, so they will be at a big disadvantage (Yes they do suspend coaches for having practices) with brutal cold travel to Lexington will be hard. and I bet the horse barn will be cold. Sounds like what happens to state duals every other year.

here is a well written editorial on the subject http://www.courier-journal.com/story/sports/columnists/sullivan/2015/02/12/tim-sullivan-rules-end-st-wrestlers-reign/23326995/

Just sad timing, Firecrackers and tobacco in the last week of your senior season. Sad that STX doesn't take in the fact that the Lampe family had represent STX in a positive way for many years and that for a religious school tobacco isn't a sin and a first offence can be re looked at. I understand the concept of rules being right/wrong view and everyone should be held to the same standard. but jugs and other punishment could have been used instead for a first offence
