I guess you never learned what assume meant (<you make an> ass <outta> u <and> me)  First you assumed Storck was going 26 after you just saw him in NC at 120.  Doesn't make sense why you'd put him in a different class - to me, anyway. You also assumed I was talking about an agenda against Storck? Why would you? Our kids are in different weight classes...  The agenda I'm referring to is getting rankings out with not much to go on until weight assessments. Maybe I used the term incorrectly in this case. Goal might have been better.

And being of average intelligence I guess you thought I'd miss the potshot about the "real matchups" as if Storck couldn't be in one. Real classy. I'll go on and predict the finals at 120 will be Storck and Cagen Wallace, another fine young man whose father I actually like. If I'm wrong, I'll eat my crow. If it comes to fruition it'll be a hell of a match not to mention a real matchup.

Easy Tiger!!  Its a little early in the season to get so fired up.  I find it funny that you are getting so upset about pre-season rankings.  Tyler has been wrestling for a long time and he is a good wrestler.  I have no doubt that he will make a run at a State Title this year.  However, I would be careful writing checks for your son that he will have to cash.  You basically guaranteed in two separate post that he will be in the finals.  That is probably putting unnecessary pressure on Tyler going into the season.  I would much rather see Tyler on here making this statement than his dad.  After all Tyler is the one wrestling.

You and I have been in a lot of wrestling rooms and tournaments together for years and this seems a little out of character for you.  As you know, My son Mason does pretty well on the mat.  You would never see my get on a wrestling website and talk how my kid is going to walk to the finals and basically beat all the kids in his weight class.  I don't know what State Tournament you have been going to but, those state titles are hard to come by.  Hopefully, Mason gets one this year but, you would never hear me predict that.

I'm also trying to figure out your post about going to a National Tournament.

Who'd have thought Storck would wrestle a now 6 time super 32 champ/top 5 kid (nationally) in the second round at Super 32! Tough draw! But funny we didn't see any of those kids wrestling there that are ranked above him. Just my 2 cents!!

How did that tournament work out for him?  The last tournament Mason attended was Flo Nationals and he had Sammy Sasso first match.  Sasso happens to be a #1 ranked national wrestler.  Mason got his butt kicked.  However, Mason bounced back and won 6 matches in a row to take 4th.  3 of those wins were over top 20 nationally ranked wrestlers.  I can tell you as a dad, I have never been prouder of Mason and his performance on the mat.  You did not see me get on KY Wrestling and go on and on about how tough my kid is and who he is going to beat this year.  I also did not call out every wrestler in KY that did not attend Flo Nationals.  There have been plenty of times people have picked Mason to lose and sometimes he does.   My guess is they will do the same thing at some point this year.  That is how it works.  This doesn't mean they have an agenda or they think Mason is a bad kid.   They just think another kid is better than Mason.  Not a big deal unless you make it one.

Now on to your comment about your "Bored Fact Checkers".  Considering I help Ranger follow results thru the year, I take a little offense to your comment.  You can't even imagine the hours that go into doing the rankings.  I assure you it is not an easy job.  I will tell you that there is no agenda in regards to Tyler.  I think he is a tough, physical wrestler.  However, your recent rants are making it difficult to root for him.  You are very proud of Tyler and I understand why.  I am also a father and I am my son's biggest fan.  I know this is a tough and demanding sport for the wrestler and the entire family.  We all devote a lot of time putting our kids in a position to be successful on the mat and in life.

I'm sure you understand the phrase "living vicariously".  I think this applies in this situation.  You should take a step back and let Tyler prove what ever he feels he needs to on the mat.  You don't need to tell us how great he is. I assure you that he will do just fine, if he just wrestles.    The results will say more than anything you could type.  If you just let him wrestle, you won't have to make excuses every time he happens to take a loss.

Tell Tyler good luck this season and go get that title.

Still have Weights open for this Team. Please let us know if you would like to compete for Team Kentucky. Feel free to email me at tlc.darrenthomas@gmail.com with any questions. It would be a shame to not be able to take a team,or a full team, with all the talent Kentucky has.

Let me know if you need a 160.

Uh oh Statetitlebound.....looks like the Ranger knows who you is... You are the weakest link..... Goodbye!

You can say goodbye to statetitlebound but unfortunately you will see him tomorrow at your region.   It is hilarious that a high school coach would make up a screen name just to talk trash.  I figured it was just a high school kid mad he wasn't ranked higher. Come to find out it is a coach you know well.  Classic!!!

  8. That was a pretty good breakdown.  I also believe that the team race will be close all the way to the end.

I would say that most of the picks you made look reasonable.  However, I could see 106,113,120,132,160,170, 220, and 285 going slightly different 1-4.  I see a bunch of coin flip matches that could go either way.

Good luck to Cody and your team.  Should be a great weekend of wrestling!!!!

  9. Wrestling year round is a tough one.  My opinion is every kid is different.  I would suggest that any parent with a young wrestler should talk to some older wrestling parents and see what worked best for their child.

The first and most important factor is the goal of the young wrestler.  Does he want to make it to state?  Maybe they fell a little short last year and they are just looking to improve.  Maybe they want to be a State Placer or State Champ.  Does the wrestler want to wrestle in college? No matter the goal, working in the offseason will improve their chances of achieving those goals.

If you consider a normal wrestling season for most kids.  This season starts mid October and ends mid February.  That is a total of 4 months on the mat.  Imagine if that wrestler had an additional 4 months of training in the offseason.   He could basically gain an entire wrestling season on most of his competition .  If the wrestler trained year round it would be basically 3 wrestling seasons in a calendar year.

This brings me back to every kid is different.  I am friends with many wrestlers and parents.  I know many kids that wrestle just during the season and many kids that train year round.  It seems to me that the majority of the kids that train year round are looking to wrestle in college.  However, my guess is that we will have some KY kids that will wrestle in college that don't train year round. Once again, I believe the wrestler needs to have realistic goals and then its up to the parents and coaches to help him achieve the goals.

My personal experience with raising a wrestler has probably been like the majority of parents.  I have spent countless hours in the wrestling room, weight room, tournaments, road trips, camps, etc.  Sometimes we forget that wrestling is a entire family commitment depending on how involved the wrestler is in the sport.  I'm sure some people know what I am talking about.  I always say, "imagine if my son would have continued to play basketball".  Would be pretty cool to go to a game and be out in an hour.  On the other hand I imagine I would have still been at basketball camps, weight rooms, tournaments, etc.

So back to the question "How many wrestle year round?"

My son was involved with basketball, baseball, soccer, football, and wrestling until the 7th grade.  Since then he only plays football and wrestles.  Mason started lifting weights in the summer going into the 7th grade.  We all teamed up with Ranger and would go over to Campbell County and do workouts 3 days a week.  The workouts were tough and not to mention the stink eyes from some of the Campbell parents.  That was a joke by the way.  I believe that weight training is an important part of wrestling.  I can tell you it is hard to put muscle on skinny.

We also spend a lot of time at Jeff Jordans. We have been to a ton of camps over the years.  There were two reasons we always went to Jordans when they were younger.  First, you will not find tougher competition at a camp.  We would always ask Jeff to sign our boys up for the "hammer camp".  This is the week he puts all the top guys in one group. They would usually take some serious butt kickings.  Second, he shows a handful of technique that your wrestler will actually use.  They will drill those same moves hundreds of times during that week.  So if you are looking for standing leg cradles or flying squirrels this is not the camp for your kid.   We also always traveled in packs.(Ryan, Blake, Spencer, and Mason)  I would say that is an important part for the kids.  They have the chance to hangout with their closest friends and not just dad who is probably worn out from the 10 hour tournament.

Once they move into the later years of high school the boys are more independent.  They have spent years with kids all over the state and now they usually train together.  Most of our group trains at ETC during the offseason.  I believe there are multiple clubs available in all parts of the state.  Most of the group are going to camps in the offseason at the colleges they would like to attend.

I assure you that I don't have all the answers.  There are many parents that have raised multiple wrestlers and might of done things differently.  Who is to say what success looks like?  Wins? Titles? College? No matter where my son ends up I would say it was successful.  I would not trade these memories for anything.  I can tell you that I watched a lot of wrestlers and parents over the years.  I tried to talk to parents and coaches who had already been through the journey.  I took some of their advice and did what I thought was best for my son.  He tells me all the time "Thank you"  The older they get, the more they really understand.

Hope this helps anyone with younger kids.  Hopefully some other parents with many more years experience than me will add some insight.

Man, I didn't expect to write a book.
