  1. The toughest middle school tournament has to be the bearcat brawl. The teams that coach Roth has put together is amazing. We should see some very good matches from some top level wrestlers. Good job coach Roth.

    Youth Wrestling in High School

I would agree that nobody should take a middle school wrestler to fill a spot. I would think that a coach or other wrestlers could talk to students at school and hopefully find someone to fill a spot. However I don't think that you hold back a middle school wrestler that can hang at that level. I would say this mainly happens in the lower weights. I would also say that common sense from the coach and parents would be able to make a sound descion. I think with the way the younger wrestlers are progressing we should see even more middle school wrestlers being able to compete at the high school level. I am always amazed when a young wrestle competes with guys 3-4 years older than them. I just came back from super 32 and watched an 8th grader named spencer lee take 2nd at one of the toughest tournaments in the country. He was amazing. I know we just had the Lawson kids come to ky. They are middle school kids which I have been told will compete at the high school level. I can't wait to see them wrestle. Kudos for all the hard work it took them to be able to compete at that level.

    Forget Howe Vs Taylor

Looks like your wish has been granted. Taylor and Dake are going to wrestle 165 at the NWCA all-star this November. Flowrestling also said that Dake is planning to go 165 this year. I love David Taylor but I will have to take Dake. Should be a great match
  8. Mason Smith Ryan Moore Spencer Moore Blake Roth These wrestlers will be making the trip and maybe a few other middle school wrestlers

    Kentucky @ Super 32

The following MS kids with be going to super 32. Mason Smith Ryan Moore Blake Roth Tanner Yenter Spencer Carpenter Most of us will be at Simon Kenton on Wed, Mason High School on Sunday. There is plenty of High School competition at both of these open mats. As far as another practice in Northern Ky I would PM Ranger or Turk. They always seem to put a lot of things together no matter what school just to better the kids who are training for national events.
  10. A big thanks to jason moore and the graham staff. It was great to see such a large turn out. I saw some tough kids trying to get better. Thanks again for putting the camp together

    Mason Ohio open mats

Tonight was the first night of Sunday night open mats at Mason High School. The room was loaded. I counted 50+ wrestlers. Anywhere from 75lbs to hwt, middle school and high school. I would suggest if you are looking for open mats with a large amount of kids this is the good place to go. The Mason coaching staff was great and very welcoming to our Ky boys.

    Super 32

If anyone would like to train with some middle school wrestlers 80-100lbs. We will be wrestling on every Tue @Moeller High School, Wed @ Simon Kenton and Sun @ Mason High School in preparation for Super 32. There are also two great camps listed under events. Jordan camp at Campbell County and the Bearcat camp with Dave Barnes and Eric Cameron. The season is right around the corner. Hopefully some more Ky wrestlers could make the trip with us.
  14. A friend and I were having a conversation today about the match ups we were looking forward to the most this year. I was curious what match ups other people were hoping to see. Here are some of the ones we came up with. Obviously we are guessing on weights Grandstaff vs Peace/Pledger/delong Horton vs Holub Roth vs Yenter/Wheeler/Hahn Wells vs Kraezig/Ervin Moore vs Chaffee/Brown Smith vs Sheffer/Floyd Miles vs Johnson/oxford Once you get past 105 its was a guess. I can say everyone of these guys are fun to watch and im sure they will all be great matches. Dont take these as state predictions just good kids who will be fun to watch wrestle each other. The season will be here before we know it.

No-Ox Champ Camp/ Jesse Leng from Jeff Jordan

I agree with kyor74. The camp was worth the trip. I can't say enough about the hospitality of joe B. Thanks for allowing Mason and the rest of the kids I brought to stay at your home. They said they had a blast. If I knew you were making steaks for dinner I think I would have brought a sleeping bag too. Lol. I saw a lot of talent in that room. I imagine we might see a bunch of those kids making it to state. Thanks again joe.
  16. A friend and I talked about match ups we would love to see this year. I am more involved in middle school than high school However we came up with some names of matches we would love to see. Rearic vs Lawson/Binder/Roth Whalen vs Erdman/Lawson Blackwell vs Shirkey/Boston Ervin vs Brown Lampe vs Fausz Carr vs Lampe Polly vs Jones Hamilton vs Cooper/Myers/Jones Canter vs Chamblee Myers vs Thompson/Bryant The weights were just a guess. Im not trying to predict winners. Just saying I hope to see some of these matches happen this year. These guys are all unbelievable wrestlers and it will be very exciting to watch. We made the same list for middle school. Just curious of what matches people were looking forward to seeing.

    Most anticipated match ups

I agree with pinandwin. To think that a stud like sheffer is not putting in time would be crazy. He didn't win 3 in a row by sitting at home playing xbox. However from reading the previous post I don't think anyone was insinuating that. When I started this post it was for fun to talk about the great matches everyone was looking forward to seeing. Not to down any other wrestlers. Or to hear people talk about my kid could beat your kid. I have many post on this forum and they are all praising kids and parents for the great job they do. I also realize people have their opinions on who might accomplish what in the future. I think that's great but I try to be positive and not take it personal. When ranger posted the preseason rankings he had mason as the favorite at 98. Then he received information that sheffer was going 98 and made him the favorite which nobody would argue with including me. That same day pinandwin said he thought that taran floyd was the favorite at 98. Taran is also a stud so I see why he says that. Did I take that as he said my kid stinks? No! Its just his opinion of what he thought. I think we all need to remember they are kids. I think wrestling is tough enough of them. I would never let my son or any other kid get to far ahead of themselves. There is still a lot of work to be done before we start talking about state finals for anyone. I teach my son to be humble and respectful to other wrestlers, coaches, and parents. Its great people are so excited for the future but the last think I want is to have unnecessary tension between kids, parents, coaches,or teams. So that being said maybe we can all remember that competition is great but it the kids out there wrestling on the mat not us. Good luck to all the wrestlers this season.

Walton-Verona MS Bearcat Brawl Dec. 2012

Ranger, I think little spencer moore could win a few. I have seen him flip tires. He has no fear. He just needs a little more Mass. Keep feeding him.

    Camps vs. tournaments?

I'm curious on which people prefer during the off season. We have debated which is better for improving a wrestler during the off season. I believe both is good. I think the camps and different coaches showing different techniques works well. I think kids pick up different moves from different people. I think a wrestler takes a little from each coach he see's. As far as tournaments I would say that's when I see the biggest improvements. I think the more mat time they start to mature and figure things out. I am curious what other people think.

    Camps vs. tournaments?

Pinandwin thanks for the feedback. Mason and I have watched your son for years. My son has always looked up to him. I have made references to your son style and build to mason over the years. Its funny how wrestling goes through phases with the kids. When they are in youth they look up to the older kids and want to be just like them. Same style, singlets, even the shoes. I joke about that but its so true. Now that my son is getting older I see the little youth kids looking up to him the same way. I explain to him how important it is to spend time talking to them and showing them moves. He understands that it is important just like it was important when he was younger. He enjoys it so much. now he is fascinated by the austin and stephen. I can say they go out of their way to show him attention and also show him moves. I that's what is all about. I love to see kids grow and remember they were little once too. Thanks again for all the people that give back to better the sport. Good luck to logan this year. He is a beast

    Camps vs. tournaments?

Thanks for the feedback. I think coming from you guys that have raised some pretty tough wrestlers you have a good idea of what it takes. I know there are a lot of different ideas about this. I agree with both of you guys. We have been to many different camps and coaches. Jordans's is the one that we continue to go to over and over again. He has a way of getting the best out of a wrestler. Not to mention the room is packed with studs. it has been good to see the same kids that 6 months ago you couldn't score on to closing the gap. That seems to build confidence. Thanks again for the feedback and it seems like there are a lot of parents an coaches who are passionate about the sport in general not just their team or kid.

favorite wrestler you have ever watched and why?

There have been so many great wrestlers over the years. I really enjoy watching the current wrestlers we have in the great state of ky. There are a ton of high school wrestlers that are very entertaining to watch. I would have to say brock ervin, stephen and austin myers would be three of my favorites. Brock and stephen due to their funk. They are so quick they have a tendency to make there opponent look confused and timid during the match. Austin is a different beast all together. He is probably one of the strongest high school wrestlers I have seen. Not to mention his athletic ability. He moves like he is a 160. I think the big boys aren't use to defending what he brings at them. If anybody remembers frank wolzinek from holmes he had the same quickness for a big man. Normally I prefer watching the lighter weights but these guys are fun to watch. There are also some young guys that are fun to watch. Spencer moore, blake roth, bryce scheffer, logan erdman, dallas miles. I know it would be easy to name sanderson, burroughs, taylor, etc. But I figured I would talk about the talent we have here in ky. .
