    Best Wrestling Camps

There are a ton of great camps. I have to say that Jordan's has been the one that we continue to go to every year. I think Jeff and Jessie do an amazing job. I would say the biggest benefit is the competition in the room. It is always loaded with talent. Not to mention all the graham kids that show up each day to go live. For any parents that have youth kids I would highly suggest the father son camp That was one trip I always looked forward too. Watching the kids wrestle for 3 days straight. Also watching ranger with his laptop doing the preseason rankings. Unfortunately my son is growing right up so no more daddy camp. As a parent the hope is that your child will actually use what he has learned at camp. I think that helps justify the expense. We have been to a lot of other great camps but Jordan's camps and his sunday open mats has to be his favorites.

    Team Kentucky National Duals Updates

Kentucky Red (Coaches Efren Quirino ,Brandon Cornett, Jeremy Rader, Bo Barrett) It was a tough couple of days for the Red team. All of the kids on the team were making the trip to National Duals for the first time with the exception of one. I can say being a part of it for the 2nd year it is tough. It is really tough on these kids to have so much success during the season and experience two days of wrestling the toughest kids in the country. Most of these kids had very few losses during the season. So usually the second day most of them are feeling discouraged. I can tell you as a coach and a father it is that it is heartbreaking to watch the kids feel so discouraged. I know first hand since last year my son went 0-7. Fortunatley for us the 2nd day a lot of the kids decided to open up and leave it all on the mat. Not one kid quit. It was like a switch went off for a lot of the kids. I notice the guys all on their feet cheering and going crazy for their teammates during and after the matches. Kentucky Red 3 vs. Ohio Stallions Black 93. I can say I didnt know it was possible to score 93pts in a dual. This was the toughest team in our pool. Kentucky Red 2 vs. IKWF Silver 80. We actually had 3 but we lost a team pt for a kid taking his singlet down walking off the mat. Kentucky Red 6 vs. Oregon 81. We had a big win from Diion Leavell. He had a barn burner 13-12 Kentucky Red 21 vs. Texas Black 64. We started out strong with Holub, Fitzhugh,Whorton, and Mason all getting wins. Looked like we were starting to come alive. Kentucky Red 41 vs. Team USA 36 . A few more guys got a win. Holub,Fitzhugh, Hanh, Mason, Woodward, Lanham. Finally got our first team win. Kentucky Red 21 vs. Nebraska Blue 55. Wins by Holub, Hanh, Whorton, Mason, Leavell. Kentucky Red vs. Ohio Titans. Dont have the scores but we tied and ended up with the decision. 2nd team win Kentucky Red vs. Texas White. We lost by 20 pts but forfeited 3 weight classes. We were short 3 weight classes to start each dual and lost our 220 the first day due to injury . 75 Zach Holub (4-4) Record- He really came alive the 2nd day. I have to say he is the most flexible kid I have ever seen wrestle. We only received 2 all american plaques as a team. He was 3rd in the voting. Great job!!! 80 Clay Fitzhugh (2-6) Record- Clay is a tough kid. I was talking about his man muscles to the other coaches. lol He had a big pin over the Texas kid. 85 Jordan Hahn (2-6) Record- Jordan started out the 2nd day strong with two wins in a row. He also lost a 6-7 match against the Texas kid. 90 Brock Whorton (5-3) Record- Brock is a stud, he just doesnt know it yet. It started out rough but he turned it on. I dont know what they are teaching at John Hardin but its working. I have a feeling he will be making the trip again next year. Outstanding young man!!!!!! 95 Zane Brown (1-7) Record- he had multiple close matches. Zane had his hand smashed during his match and would not let me stop it. He went back out and finished the match. Heart of a champion. 102 Mason Smith (8-0) Record- I can say big turn around from last year. I was very proud of my son and his approach to each match. I can say the car ride home was much more pleasant than last year. Good job!!! 110 Colin Barrett (1-7) Record- He had the closest matches of anyone on the team. He wrestled his butt off. Finally got one the 2nd day. Out of all the kids I can say I wanted him to win more than anyone. Every match could have gone either way. Good job to Colin and his will to keep fighting. 117 Noah Hammond (1-7) Record- Noah was giving up some size. He is a strong kid. Tough when all the kids are cutting and your 3 pounds under. Way to continue to fight. He is the one kid that goes full speed as soon as they blow the whistle. 125 Ryan Woodward (1-7) Record- Another kid giving up weight. He did have a win over the Team USA kid. 132 Diion Leavell (2-7) Record- He a big win against the Oregon. A big thanks to Mr. Leavell for doing our bout sheets. 140 Kadin Kulmer (0-8) Record- for a 6th grader he is a man. Very strong young man. Im sure he will be making the trip again. 150 FF 160 Chance Lanham (0-8) Record- Wrestled tough all weekend. 175 Heath Luttrell (0-8) Record- Another big guy that lost a couple close ones 195 FF 220 Corban Couch (0-3) Record- had a injury and couldnt continue. Great kid and I hope he recovers soon. 275 FF Overall I was very proud of these kids. I saw a lot of kids making new friends as well as myself. The kids and the other coaches were a pleasure to be with over the weekend. I am sure many of these kids will be back next year. I think the experience these kids had will carry on with them. Great job to all the kids who represented Ky.

    Team ky middle school

Wanted to say congratulations to all the kids that made the team. Most of the boys have been working their tails off 4 days a week in preparation for the trip to Danville for the middle school national duels. I can say that it's amazing to see all the talent in the room at each practice. Every year ky wrestling is getting better. Good job guys. I also wanted to thank all the parents for making the long drive so these kids can continue to get better.

Ben has been a pleasure to work with. I have been thinking about him for the last couple days. Every time I touch my swollen right ear. Lol. He is a big kid. I think I need to invest in some head gear. I think I am a little old for cauliflower ear.

This is my 2nd year of being a part of team ky. As a coach I can say it has been an honor to work with all these boys. It has been a pleasure to get to know the kids and all of the parents. I would like to thank all the parents for the time the devote to get these kids to the next level. The reality is that we only have a short time. Before we know it they will be all grown up. Not to mention girlfriends one day. Lol. Thanks again

    KHSAA State Tournament 2013

I can't agree enough. I think bad calls happend sometimes. That is part of wrestling. I can assure you it happens at all levels not just youth. My son has had plenty of matches that had some questionable calls. Some went against him and some for. I am very clear with him that it happens. I usually tell him he should have pinned him. Lol. My point is that what message are we teaching our kids. To make excuses or blame it on someone? I think if you make it clear at a young age that sometimes it happens the kids will be better off. . What do you tell them when they get a questionable call in their favor. I go to a lot of tournament and I usually see the same parents and coaches going crazy about the ref. Just because your kid lost doesn't mean the ref is at fault. I can tell you from experience that I would crush this attitude of it being the refs fault at a early age or it will always be someone's fault when they lose. Just my humble opinion.

Who are the legit contenders for the next 3-4 years?

Here are a few more names of some kids that I think will do well in the next few years. Ryle (both erdmans), Walton (Meyers), Campbell (wells, yenter,Moore), cooper (Hamilton, bailey). The talent keeps getting better each year.

kentucky needs to step it up

I think a lot of people have made some great suggestions. I think at last youth meeting they came up with the idea to take all the placers and put together a tournament after the state tournament. That should put to rest who the real state champion is. I went to two youth practices recently and talked to multiple kids. I asked them if they were going to win a title. Most of their faces lit up and the response was "yes". The point is that an 8 year kid is excited to win the tournament. Regardless if the adults are arguing that it is not a true state title. I say let them be kids and be excited to win a title. As far as weight classes I think this will be addressed at the new season ending tournament. The big problem is the parents cutting little Johnny down from 54 to 50lbs when the kid is 8 years old. That's a problem. I remember doing regional weigh ins a few years ago and a parent told me his 7 year old stayed home from school and ran all day prior to weigh ins. Wow. I thought what is wrong with people. I can say as a parent and coach I can remember when my son won his first youth title. The excitement for him was indescribable. He ended up winning 3 total and none of the compared to the first. Now that he is in middle school he understands what it takes just to make it to state. The point is that in the moment of his first title he didn't get his medal and say "I'm not the true champion". They have plenty of time to work and battle to make it to state and hopefully win a middle school title or high school title. Let them be kids. I can tell you it gets tougher the older they get. That so called title might be the only one they ever get. Mine is still hoping to get a middle school title. Maybe one day he will. Lol. Good luck to all the youth kids Sunday. When all the kids climb up on that podium to get their medal look at their faces. Let me know if the kids care they are not the "true state champion"

    State results

Thanks for all the great things people had to say about mason. I know he was very disappointed to fall a little short of his goal this year. I can say I was very proud of him to pull his self together and wrestle back. As a father I hurt for him. Wrestling is a very emotional sport for the kids as well as us coaches and parents. Thanks again for all the people that were rooting for him Wanted to also say great job to Joey Roberts for winning a title. His dad is a great guy. I know he has to be proud of him.
