    Updates from Day 1

How about that 170 Bracket. 1, 2, and 3 are still left then the next highest ranked kid is 13. Marksberry who is on the same side of the bracket.

Updates have dried up? Do we need to start paying for them? Wish the would post the first round already.
  4. I grew up in Minnesota where you can wrestle up and as an 8th Grader I wrestled varsity at 103 (I actually had to eat to make weight with an 88 pound minimum). My parents were worried at first but I had been wrestling since 1st grade so I actually had a lot more experience than most of the kids I wrestled. I didn’t have a great record because of my size but was able to hold my own. Because of this experience I will always side on the Middle School kids being allowed to wrestle up. Most of the best programs don’t need MS kids because they are 3-4 deep at most weight classes and great wrestlers often have very good wrestlers pushing them at practice and will take their spot if they slack off. Mark Hall is of course the exception rather than the norm. Kentucky however is nowhere close to a top notch wrestling state and anything Kentucky can do to keep the sport growing should be done. As Givemethatdouble pointed out that unlike football and Soccer weight classes keep things fair between a 7th grader and a senior. I will also throw out that my wife is a Certified Athletic Trainer and said a MS kid doesn’t have any greater chance to get injured wrestling at the HS level. In fact A study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine states: The most commonly injured areas were the shoulder (24%) and knee (17%). Injured wrestlers were an average of 5 months older and had a 32% higher experience level than noninjured wrestlers. Wrestlers with ligamentous laxity suffered fewer shoulder injuries than the other wrestlers. The majority of injuries occurred in practice (63%), although the injury rate was higher in match competitions. Sixty-eight percent of practice injuries occurred during hard wrestling, 23% during drills, and 9% during conditioning. The most common wrestling situation resulting in injury was the takedown position (68%). Our results show that the older and more experienced wrestler may be at greater risk of injury. Hard wrestling during practice and the takedown position resulted in the highest occurrence of injury. http://ajs.sagepub.com/content/28/4/509.abstract If they can earn the spot let them wrestle. If you can’t beat them work harder.

    Football coaches Vs Wrestling.

Just a quick story that happened to me this weekend. Although only a part of the story relates to the topic I thought it would fit on this thread. I am a Chicago Bears fan and had tickets to the Monday night game against the Vikings. Last Friday I flew to Madison, WI to meet my brother (Viking Fan) and drive to Minnesota. On the way I had a connecting flight in Cincinnati. As I boarded the plane to Madison I saw that the person I would be sitting next too was Bret Bielema, the University of Wisconsin head football coach. We had a nice little conversation during which I made it a point to ask if he liked his recruits to wrestle. His answer went something like this (not an exact quote): I am indifferent when it comes to some of the positions like wide receiver but I really like when my linemen wrestle. My one concern is the extreme weight cutting that some kids do. Then he said wrestling was his first love. I told him many states now have a weight loss program that prevents some of the excessive cutting and he seemed pleased by this. The rest of the conversation is not important to this post so I won't go in to detail other than to say he is a nice guy and made for a pleasureable flight on top of a great, but cold, football game.
  6. Before I start with the message I intended to write when I logged on I would like to wish Jake a successful recovery. I was shocked and saddened when I logged on and learned of the news and I hope everything turns out ok. I have only been around Kentucky wrestling for the last two years but I am going to miss not being around it this year. For this reason I wanted to log on and take the time to wish everybody good luck, even Woodford, and an injury free season. I hope everybody has a successful season and has a little fun doing it
  7. He was just the rejected prototype. Great at wrestling rankings but fell a little short on the battle simulations. We have since moved on to Ranger 2.0

    Medical Question

Ok, let me say first that I am a Certified Athletic Trainer. Coach J is my better half and I am using his account to answer this question. Ok that said, there are some things that need to mentioned here. I don't know the specifics of the original post but I seriously doubt that a ATC would recommend non participation without a valid reason. The welfare of the athlete is ALWAYS the goal of the ATC. ATCs can make return to participation decisions especially in a acute injury situation. Because this could be a situation where a specialist (orthopedic surgeon, neurologist, etc) has stated that the athlete cant participate and the ATC knows that. Until the specialist releases the athlete, the athlete cant participate. If no specialist is involved and two physicians clear the individual that releases the school and trainer from liability as long as the parents agree with the participation in writing. ATCs are not at the schools to keep kids from participating. They are there to keep them safe.
  9. I'll say it to give Ranger a break. The rankings are based on the state tournament only. Each rank from 1-24 has a point value associated with it based on how many points that person will score on average. Ranger does not pick the teams he just ranks the kids and then adds up the points. For example at the WCI if the top two kids are #1 from team A and #8 from Team B and they finish 1-2 the #1 kid will only score about 4-10 more points. At state assuming they finish 1st and 8th the difference will be about 12-20. You also have to take into account that there still people dropping weight and people out nursing injuries.

    NKAC

Both Minnesota and Wisconsin have state dual meet Tournaments. I also know MN duals are the same weekend as state. as an example. Morning session Class I duals Class II individual evening Class I individual Class II duals This makes state three days long and a few kids wrestle in both but they have been doing this for years and it has seemed to work.

    WCI

Since I was on the mat during the Holtsclaw match I will offer my opinion which is the same as CGD78 and Ranger. Although I tried to lobby to get all three calls which any coach would do I have no major disagreement with any of the calls during that match. Furthermore I am extremely happy that Wade didn't let it get him down. He kept attacking and won the match. I will also say that I think the last second reversal call on Goodwine was correct. The only possible complaint I might have is Vince Staten did the same thing 3 times in a row but only got two cautions. I will assume that since it was close the official gave him the benefit of the doubt since it would have cost him a point in a double overtime match and as long as an official is consistent with doing that I am not that upset.

To say the officials were bad because of one call you disagreed with lacks a little common sense. I did not see the match or call you are talking about however I will say this. Even if it was a bad call everybody makes mistakes. I will also say that miles didn't win the match because of the call. He won because he got the takedown in OT. If an official makes a bad call, which happens even with the best, it is the wrestlers responsibility to get over it immediately and come back and do whatever it takes to win the match. If a wrestler lets the call defeat him mentally then the match is already over.
