    2022 State recap

My intention was to try and stay as neutral as I can. My big mouth gets me in trouble a lot (Just ask my wife LOL) I would 100% like to return to the 32 man bracket. My hope is that we get enough wrestling team that we will need to return to District-Region-State. Some regions are getting very big, but we are not there yet. Lou needs to get back the old teams and push for more new teams. Nky needs to get new teams specifically the area between Nky and Lou-Lex. (The counties of Gallatin, Carrol, Owen, Bracken, Robertson, Mason, Trimble, and Henry)

    Integrity

There are several reasons a kid may be held back. Academics and maturity are just 2 of them. Maybe I am naive but I don't think what you are referring to actually happen very often. I don't personally know of anyone who remained in a grade for athletic reasons. I choose to believe that any kid who remains back have more reasons than just trying to win a title in an athletic sport. Even if this is the real reason, then they must need this success more than you or I realize. Sometimes all a kid needs. Is to succeed in one thing to change their life forever. Those that may lose a placement after working hard, because of this action, will probably still succeed in life. I for one would sacrifice my placement or my child's placement to change a young person's life forever.

Middle school state > high school

I personally have never understood the confusion with age participation in middle school. KHSAA has a maximum age requirement. If you use that rule as a guideline and subtract 4 year (the 4 years they would be in high school) you should get the maximum age for a middle school student. That way they can still get 4 years of high school eligibility. Now I know that there is a wrinkle because of COVID. KHSAA has allowed for a repeat year this year in response to COVID. This should also trickle down to the middle school. You don't have to agree with the rule, but you must abide by the rule and respect the rule until it is changed. I am very old school and we are now living in a world where everyone gets their feelings hurt and I really don't understand it. But like MaMa always told me "suck it up buttercup and get better", "worry only about yourself and not what someone else is doing". (I don't argue with MaMA)

    120 finals prayer

I understand your concern. Many people fear that they don't understand or things out of the ordinary. I either out of ignorance or curiosity (probably ignorance) I find things that are different interesting and try to understand it more. I don't have to agree with what it is, but I should understand it and know why it is being done. Either way as MaMa always said ignorance is bliss. . And I for one am very blissful.

    You Make the Call

I have seen this individual wrestle many times. He has been called for stalling and either as the stall call was issued or immediately afterwards he would shoot or throw something and score. It seems his style is to take steps backwards to set up his move. Which in turn will be called for stalling a lot. I was confused with the ending but all he had to do was shoot at the leg/foot and then keep pushing forward. IMO he was the better wrestler and should have won the match, but we all know the best wrestler does not always win.

    120 finals prayer

Hmm I am a little confused by this argument. I personally did not know what religion either of them were praying to. I was not sure what exactly they were doing. No hands in a prayer (which would indicate christian), they were sitting down on knee (I thought maybe a jewish ritual) at one point I thought they were taking a knee in honor or Black lives matter. Maybe this is just my ignorance, but regardless I kept my mouth shut and allowed them to take the few moments they needed to complete whatever they were doing, and I hope that is what most were doing at the tourney.

Man don't bring video into the mix. #1 Every match would have to be recorded. (Would be touch to require every mat to have a video at every tourney) #2 How often do we use it? If you only get 1 or 2 a match then it still does not solve the problem when a call is wrong after you use the time out. #3 Do we really want to add even more time to the events? I know personally I do not like the video replay in any sport. It takes away from the sport. If we micromanaged every second of the match with electronics there would be no human factor. I know many times in the sports that I played part of the game was blocking the view of the official/referee/Umpire to get away with a call. (Part of the game)

Ranger you have hit the nail on the head. As MaMa always said you catch more bees with honey. I have seen a change in the coaching style these last 5-10 years. Many of the coaches ride the official all match long, much like many basketball coaches do (I've heard it called "working the officail"). Wrestling is one of the last sports that takes sportsmanship to a higher level, and rightfully so. This is an in your face sport, one on one, trying to rip the others head off battle. That is why we need the sportsmanship aspect. In the >>>>> many years I have been here I have always talked to officials after the match is completed. That way you know the call will not be changed and the official knows you are not trying to change it. A much more civilized conversation occurs at this time.

I know many many years ago there use to be a grade card the head coach could fill out after a competition. I don't think coaches used it much, unless they had a complaint, so they got rid of it. This was way back when Don Salyers was still the head official.

It is growing pains. To grow the sport we need more middle and Youth programs. Girls wrestling has been increasing. All of these programs need coaches. There is not enough to go around. > Many Youth and Middle school coaches are Dads. These Dads move on when their kids move on and then a coach needs to be replaced. More kids go to college with little time to referee when they also have a full or part time job. I don't know the answer, but this is the situation we are in now. The stalling situation is the same every year. They don't call the quick stall all year then call it in the post season. (Has been happening in the 35+ years I have been around) The Herron call was wrong only in that it was not called sooner. I was sitting behind the action and noticed it right away, the assistant referee noticed it and told the head official then he started counting. However it looked like he released the foot prior to the 5 count but Trinity did not straighten his leg. (Just my 2 cents on it) Tough decision to make.

    120 finals prayer

Calling it this is a little harsh. I don't believe that either were trying to grandstand, just doing what they believe is right. I was confused at first what was going on, but thought it was nice that everyone else allowed it to happen. But, I do understand your point, not sure it would have been received well if it was another form. **Just to be clear I have no dog in this fight. I have no allegiance.

    Where Was The Podium?

All I have to say it that it is a good thing we did not have the podium. Otherwise the Ky wrestling State tournament would have went down as one of the biggest super spreader of COVID this year. Thank you so much KHSAA for watching out for the health of me and my family.

That is nothing short of the truth. I know first hand fighting against them all year. Was a dog fight that year in NKY. Simon won the Conference tourney Campbell second Conner 3rd Conner won District Campbell 2nd Simon 3rd. Campbell won region Conner 2nd Simon 3rd. Conner won state 4 points over Campbell 2nd. With all that said they were a great set of guys off the mat.

Todd Cole 4X state qualifier 2nd Jr year 1st Sr year Tom Cole State champ Senior year Troy Cole 5X state qualifier 2nd 8th Grade 4th Fr. 1st Soph, and Jr. year (MVW) 2nd Sr. year. I would say statistically Troy, but I think the other two would want to get on the mat and decide it with a royal rumble with little brother.

All I remember about Trice is Coach Plosser yelling moves from the corner and Jarrod doing whatever he told him to do in the finals. Jon Wiard was unconventionally good. Lost in overtime his Jr. year in the finals. Looked like he came right out of the movie "Hoosiers".
