  1. I think this is just bad managing by the state. There is no way this is fair to other regions if region 8 can wait until the day before or of to seed and generate brackets. They have the opportunity to look at everyone else in the state before making a decision to where they have the best opportunity for their kids. The state should not let brackets be released until a certain day by all. Seeding meetings done on the Thursday prior to districts and brackets open by all Friday morning. You are just asking for trouble with the way this has been handled.

That brings me back to my point in a previous post.

If all 3 are in the same region.  The one who placed third in the region could be the #1 seed at Semi-state.

If he placed third in the region, then whoever beat him will have criteria over him, so he cannot be the number 1 seed.

I don’t think it works like that the way the khsaa has it set up. They are comparing each wrestler to every other wrestler in the bracket.

So in the scenario wrestlers a, b, and c each would get one seeding point for their head to head victory. If you had an 8 man bracket and each of those 3 wrestlers got the seeding points over the other 5 wrestlers you would have three way tie for the top seed.

the khsaa should set out criteria for what to do if there are ties for the seeding points. Would it default back to the criteria they set, but only looking at the wrestlers in the tie?

The common opponents would be the kids in the region they just wrestled. The criteria has already been established by the state.

  4. So if it is like you say, track runs both your tourneys and weight management program, then all results should be posted by the coach by simply validating results from the tourney that Track ran. Sounds like this is more of a coach issue then state issue then. If it is what you say, track has a seeding criteria that is built in to it's program. There really is no more seeding meetings because the criteria is as listed by the tourney director, which should be in line with the states criteria for seeding. You might have some schools who have no head to heads but by the time you get to district or semi state surely there will be commons.

  5. So the hold up is just making it mandated by the state. If they would just come out and make it mandatory for coaches to input information in a timely fashion, which allows for newspapers and radio publications, and even fans have easy access to the information, you can bolster awareness. I do not have to talk to our news reporter after every meet because he knows he can get on track and access all the information he wants within 2 days of the meet. Sounds like there is a lack of consistency with things. Some coaches want it the old school way and some want to be out in front with technology.

  6. I have been saying for years that the Kentucky just needs to partner with trackwrestling. Missouri does it and it works great. All of our weigh in forms come from track, all matches are recorded in track, and you can purchase the tourney package from them and run your whole tournament for about $125. You have 48 hours to enter info on track regarding weigh ins or you get locked out and cannot print off you next weigh in sheet. Keeps everyone on level playing field as far as weight assessment. All results have to be entered on your kids for them to be able to participate in districts. Track seeds the district and has criteria set by the state. There is no more arguing at a meeting unless you can prove that a false record was put in. Coaches have to bring all weigh in sheets that are signed by the head official of the tournament or dual to the district meeting. I have been running the tournament here in my town for years with track. We can also hook laptops up and point them at the mat and broadcast each mat. It's really a pretty simple thing, but everyone needs to get on board and push for it to happen.

  7. Missouri opened up Ladies Wrestling last year for an actual state tourney. Did a couple surveys the year before to find interest. Allowed the ladies to compete against the boys and on their own. They have now established over a hundred teams with ladies wrestling. Each year they wait until weight certification to group them as best they can. It has been a wonderful sight to see. They have flourished this year and things continue to look better. Missoouri holds one of the largest high school ladies tourneys in the country called the Wonder Woman in Columbia Missouri. If any ladies can get there next year it is a great opportunity.

  8. In Missouri, Trackwrestling is used as a seeding tool throughout the year. Coaches have to update results and weigh in sheets on a regular basis, if not then you are not allowed to print out the next weigh in sheet. Other surrounding states are pretty much the same so uploading tournament results really isn't too difficult. Forfeits are counted in win totals at end of year but the criteria is adjusted at districts for certain results. It has all the criteria built in by the state and even when I run our tourney here, I put in seeding criteria to be set by coaches prior to the tourney. This allows the computer to set my seeds as soon as I pull up the brackets. Granted, their is on occasion where there are no commons between 2 wrestlers with nice records but if your seeding criteria is set beforehand then coaches have a guideline to follow.

  9. In my tenure as a head coach, Track was used throughout the state early on and tournaments would use Track results for rankings during tournaments. SOme coaches would deliberately not put results in or push the button as GOO says, so their kid could get a higher seed. I know that's not the case here because Kentucky does not mandate Track results. Although wouldn't every one be the better for it. It makes seeding meetings go extremely fast because the computer does the calculating for you. This is an age of technology, might as well use it while we can.

  10. Ranger, you shouldn't reveal your age like that. LOL, I loved Atherton. Everyone packed in like sardines and the excitement for our sport. The facility might not be what we  want to be in, but nothing compares to the energy that was in that building those years.

Was just watching some footage from 1992 back in atherton. I remember a pretty loud crowd in there.

  11. Missouri has retired officials evaluate current officials. Regions are allowed to select officials from a possible candidate list. A "No" by any team automatically rules that official out for that region. They can be put on ballot for state. From quarters on there are 2 officials on the mat.

To many coaches don't update track. To me It would be unfair to seed them off rankings..Lot of programs could care less about rankings, probably because they are to lazy to post results, let alone fight for a seed.. . Random sucks, but it is fair. Nobody can cry foul. Nobody can say the ranking are wrong etc. Random = no excuses. That's how I see it. But I'm not on the board. So whatever happens .. It is what it is. I won't lose any sleep if they seed it.

Until you start mandating coaches to update records on track or whatever data base they want to use, no point in seeding. Then you are just seeding on opinion once they figure out how to circumvent the seeding criteria. We all know coaches find ways around criteria to get kids seeded above others that are not necessarily better than that kid. Trackwrestling can be used to do all the things that KY Wrestling needs it to do if the state would just say, this is what we are doing and failure to do so will result in wrestlers not being able to participate. Missouri does it and coaches get their butts in gear and put info in.

My take on this situation is that there is a precedent set that the large school and small champs always wrestle each other. However, its not a requirement. I understand the backlash JC receives for the decision they made, but should they deserve it, imo no. They made a choice to not wrestle which is not a requirement, but maybe it will come back to bite them at the big show. As a coach, you want to seek out the best competition, look where your guys made mistakes, and fix them. That’s how you get better. If JC doesn’t want to take advantage of that opportunity, fine, but there is a chance that it will hurt them in the long run.

This is probably the most logical thought yet. I can understand both sides of this but as a former coach this statement rings true. I always sought after the competition that was the toughest and that I might see later in districts or state. I felt I could better prepare my kids if I saw a kid more than once a year. I don't fault what JC did because their coach has his teams best interest in mind. We don't know the team chemistry there but he does. Great job to both teams and look for a great state tourney from all teams.

Thank you for all the hard work time and effort you put into these for us!   But I must say I’m not very impressed with this rankings today!!! Just from a glance I see a lot that does not add up, just my opinion

I think you should do your own rankings then. Pretty sure Ranger has stated numerous times that these are based off info he is receiving. If you feel like your child was shunned by Ranger then have them perform on the mat and send those results to Ranger for ranking purposes. These are a discussion point at this time as kids change throughout the year. We are 2 weeks into the season for goodness sake.
