Mat Cats third at North Hardin meet

By Special to The News

The road to the state wrestling tournamen runs a little straighter as the Anderson County Bearcat Wrestling Team finished third at the North Hardin Trojan Invitational this last Saturday.

After two impressive victories over Fort Knox and John Hardin on the Wednesday prior, the Bearcats were prepared to face many of the region's teams at North. Rising before sunrise on Saturday, the team traveled to Radcliff for 8 a.m. weigh-ins. Then at 10 a.m. the wrestling began and did not stop until 8 that evening. But the Bearcats earned eight medals and sealed the third place trophy with a total 177.5 points. The first place went to 11th-ranked Seneca and second place went to eighth-ranked North Hardin. But the Bearcats defeated ninth-ranked Oldham County by one point.

Those fourth place finishers for Anderson were Matt Franklin, who held his own in the 189 lbs weight class with a record of 3-2 and late-comer Zack Burford, 215 lbs weight class, with a record of 4-1.

Unfortunately for Burford, he was unable to wrestle for third place because the KHSAA does not allow more than five matches in a day, and he hit that limit one match before the consolation medal round, meaning he had no choice but to accept fourth place.

Clayton Stocker received third place defeating Ross Engle of Central Hardin in the 119 lbs division, with his only loss at the hands of John Chui of Seneca, who was the second place finisher. This strong showing should lift Stocker in the rankings.

Jacob Spaulding came out of hiding and bested Justin Johnston of Moore to take third place in the 140 lbs weight class finishing the day 4-1. In the 171 lbs weight class, Robert Dillhoff, who has had been staying under the radar this year, exploded out and took third place defeating 4 out of 5 opponents.
