How To Gain An Edge On Your Wrestling Competition!

In order to develop a champion wrestler, you need to train in a wrestling-specific manner.

Here are two muscles that you'll want to keep strong in order to develop an edge on your competition.

Internal Obliques: The internal obliques wrap around the side of the waist, and function to twist the torso at the waist. This is so important to high-performance wrestling. The stronger this muscle is, the faster you'll be able to complete many of the offensive wrestling moves you use them for.

Include twisting exercises in each of your abdominal workouts.

Do lower abs first, then a twisting exercise, followed by full abs.

The second muscle you need to work on in order to gain the competitive edge on the wrestling mat is the soleus.

The soleus muscle is the underlying calf muscle on the back of your leg. It is covered by the gastrocnemius, which functions to raise up on the balls of the feet while your leg is straight.

The soleus functions to raise up on the balls of the feet too BUT only when the knee is bent.

Stop and think about how many times during a wrestling mat that your knees are bent and you are pushing off the front of the foot.

It's everywhere.

Get the soleus strong by always including seated calf raises in your wrestling-specific training. If you don't have a seated calf raise, you can put weight plates on your lap while seated. You would set up a chair in front of the bottom step of a staircase in order to do this.
