Patriot Wrestlers Dominate 48-0 In Dual

University of the Cumberlands (formally Cumberland College) traveled to Lebanon, Tennessee on December 6th to compete in a dual with the Cumberland University (CU) Bulldogs. The match was far from a dog fight as the Patriots posted an amazing 48-0 shutout victory.

Junior Delrico Choates (Ft. Pierce, Fl) kicked it off for the Patriots at the 125Ibs weight class. Choates grabbed the tech fall against Santana Adume with 1:45 left in the match, leaving the ending result at 17-2. At the 133Ibs weight class senior Billy Clark (Inez, KY) pined nationally ranked Ben Watson of CU in the second period. Junior Brad Cooper (Morningview, KY) continued the rally by beating Xaver Gomaz of CU 16-2, which was a tech fall for the Patriots 141pounder. Coming out of a red shirt year as a freshman, Dustin Center (Mason, OH) pinned JP Prince with four second left in the first period in the 149Ibs weight class.

At the 157lbs weight class sophomore Tommy Hutchison (Brandon, FL) pinned Clay Crouse at the 1:13 mark in the first period. Freshmen Charles Simmons (Dayton Beach, FL) beat Trey Myers in a 10-8 decision in the 165lbs weight class. Patriot team captain Todd Allen (Hodgensville, KY) beat Jordan Powers in a 5-0 decision at the 174lbs weight class. Moving on to the 184lbs weight class, junior Anglo Price (Snellville, GA) wasted no time joining his fellow teammates in the winning circle by pinning Luke Bornemen in 1:45 in the first period. Nationally ranked Patriot Eric Flinchum (Crestview, FL) received the tech fall over John Hughes in 5:24 with a score 15-0 at the 197-pound weight class. Finishing the night for the Patriots outstanding performance was senior Josh Bonham (Cleveland, TN) who beat Jake Sheffield 5-2 at the 285-pound weight class.

Coach Andy Medders believes his Patriots are doing what it takes to get where they need to be. “We looked good, but the competition was really no where close to our level but the practice really helped us. I am glad we dueled them and I am proud of my team and that they won with class.”

This weekend the men’s wrestling team will travel to Ohio where they will wrestle in the Ohio Northern tournament.
