  1. To the seniors graduating this year, do not walk away from this sport. Everyone who has ever wrestled understands it’s one of the best sports ever, and that it’s importance goes beyond what we see on the mat for competitions. Wherever you are, we need you in order to keep this sport alive in our great nation.

I call on you to take the initiative to become a wrestling official!

Talk to a wrestling official in your local area or contact your local officials association to start the process. Our referee numbers are dwindling. Without young men and women like you stepping up to become referees, we see the end of this sport within a generation

Per the NFHS rule book…The modified rule change (1-4-4) to allow six matches in a day was for meet management during one-day tournaments only. This rule change is not to encourage more matches in a season.

Can also only have 10 matches in a 2 day period

  6. Soccer games are starting to be canceled across the state due to the low number of officials. Lets not let this happen to wrestling. You can register for your liscense at https://khsaa.arbitersports.com

From a soccer assignor in Western KY:

This is breaking news for many but at the same time not surprising. I am the Assigning Secretary for Region 1&2 for High School Soccer. This week due to the lack of number of officials and lots of games being scheduled, games will be canceled.

Monday 3 games for one school have been canceled JVB/VB/VG; Tuesday 4 games at 2 schools JVB/VB & JVG/JVB; and Thursday 3 games at 2 Schools JVG/VG & VG. The demand for referees is high for this area and is both physically and mentally demanding. These kids NEED individuals to volunteer and work these High School games.

If you are interested please reach out to me. It’s not too late.

In my experience.... It's more youth and middle school coaches screaming and yelling. HS Coaches at times do, but it is NO where near as bad as it was 5-6 years ago. There is a difference in having a conversation during a heated moment and being cussed out. If that occurs they can be removed. Which needs to occur more to get the problem under control more so at the youth levels.

Correct youth and middle school are used as training grounds a lot of times. That's were we loose the younger officials

Just because they've all been there before and have called high level matches is subjective. Especially when the calls are hit and miss at best for a few.  I have kept quiet publicly on this but those who I respect and talk too on issues I have said this too. What needs to occur/brought back is an evaluation process of officials similar to how it was when I first came to KY and the senior officials who are out/getting out to be out evaluating and mentoring young officials.

You want to increase the number of referees?? Then teams with a big coaching staff quit hoarding coaches and send one to get ref certified. It's okay to miss one when you have 7-10 coaches on staff. There are currently 4 teams out of 122 that have VARSITY coaches who have reffed this season to include 2 of the 4 reffing in a tournament their team is in.

Couldn't agree more on having coaches licensed! I understand the programs that have 1 or 2 coaches. But the ones that have 4 or more, have them get their liscense. Only if they work 1 or 2 events all season it makes it that easier to get events covered. When youth and middle school took off 20 year ago or so we saw a huge decline in younger officials getting on the mats. They went into coaching instead. We need younger officials now more than ever. But we cant have youth, middle, and high school coaches screaming and yelling at them. Running them off and leaving a bad taste in their mouths. There will be multiple events canceled due to lack of officials. Already having a few a season right now. Fill out the info below to recieve information on how to become an official

Remember, the Sweet 16 generates over $1 million in ticket sales. UK Healthcare is also a sponsor which probably offsets a significant chunk of the total price.you really can’t compare the sweet 16 to any other state championship in KY….it is the cash cow and supports many of the other sports.

It seems the sponsorships have gone down in Wrestling. I remember years ago they would sell sponsorships on top of each scoreboard. At $200 a side that would have been an easy extra $2400. I am sure they could sell them for even more. Seems like there could be more sponsorship opportunities it an arena to help offset those costs. I know we are in a digital age but do they even sell programs any more? That was a huge money grab. Every parent would buy one because their kids names were in it

Couldn’t find the requirement in the rule book where the top wrestler must “hop sides” to avoid stalling, yet we all know if a wrestler rides on one side for too long, a stall call is coming. Yes, there are norms and “unwritten” rules. When a state title is on the line, the “unwritten rules” are that wrestlers will decide the match, even if it goes to UTB. In the Heavyweight snoozefest, I wonder what technique the ref would coach that kid to avoid stalling at the end, specifically. The kid never backed out of bounds, and was attempting to circle out of an under hook, if my memory serves me right.

It's because the time requirement is not in the book on bringing a wrestler back to the mat.

So should a stall call in the heavy weight finals match happen in regular season but not in the state finals? Just being devils advocate here. People ask for it to be called the same way all season, but when the call is made in the finals match, it shouldn't be called because it's the state finals? I have seen Dennison make that same call all season long, in December, January, and state finals. Thankfully the officials that were working this weekend have all been there before and have called high level matches all season long.

Correct, but five seconds is kind of the measuring stick here and you know it.  There are norms within the sport/community that we all know so stop being a robot.  If a kid stays in rear standing past five seconds the entire gym is waiting for a stall call to come.  When a ref takes the match into his own hands and makes a bone head stall call with seconds to go to decide the winner he's going to hear about it.  ESPECIALLY in a hwt match where action is already limited.

Norms??? I am just stating what the rule book says. People that dont know the rules hear coaches and other fans yell "5 seconds" and assume that's a rule so they start getting loud about it as well.

If your interested, we can always use more officials on the mats. Please feel free to fill out information below and get updates on when the new licensing opens, the training opportunities, and clinic.

All in all it was great some matches and there was some problems or disagreements of course its ran by humans for humans and none are prefect. As for the Stalling calls or no calls I would just say I don't think it would be as a bad or look as bad a thing if it was called all year. From the mat returns in 5 seconds to getting ran out of bounds they are never called during the year consistently but at state you are hit with them really quick. It wasn't called like that at semi-state either. That was the biggest complaint I heard about the calls is just do it all year.  Is it the rule yes so lets call it all the time.

As for the location and school I think it is an amazing school but just way to many people and uncomfortable seating to host an event for that many hours. By the second day your back is killing ya, butts are hurting and tempers are high.  I heard the people next to us ask really nice for people to sit down by rails (which was announced all day not stand at ) so they could see only to be cussed out by more than one group of people. This is partly due to KHSAA having rules and not enforcing them and not having suitable seating for people to all be able to see or be comfortable while doing so. Its wrestling we are all used to long days but with so much at stake and as long as it is we need some comfort too. I think under the conditions it was ran good and congrats to all the winners and kids that made it that far.

With the "5 second return" there is nothing in the rules that puts a time on it. The rule states while standing behind the opponent while making no attempt to return. Nothing about a 5 count.

I know I may be opening a can of worms here but::::::.   I would like to hear from some older officials that have been around for a long long time.

My question is this. are the coaches questioning/complaining/arguing more, less, or about the same as in the past.  I have been around for a long long time and I'm not sure I see a huge difference in the coaches now compared to yesteryear.  I actually believe that the coaches are arguing less.  You don't have the Joe Carr Sr. (Woo), Dave Madding (Scott) who would question or complain all the time.  I think that many officials have gotten rabbit ears.  Coaches in the corner will complain to each other about a call and the officials hear it and it gets to them.

It's the one problem our whole society is facing, a little criticism or disagreement does not have to end the world, especially if it is not directly said to you.

Then again I am probably wrong. My wife tells me I am all the time.

At the high school level it has been the same amount for at least 20 years. The issue is at middle and youth events. We have our younger officials there and you have coaches(parents) yelling at these kids. This drives away the younger officials.

When a kid sees their coach arguing a call with an official that leads them to think it is ok to disrespect an official as well. It has become a generational issue in all sports. EVERY sport is struggling to have officials at youth events because of the way they are treated. You rarely hear of issues at high school events between officials and coaches. This is because the KHSAA holds them accountable and will fine and suspended coaches. USA WRESTLING does the same when they are informed. But if it happens at an event that is not sanctioned (yes there are several middle school and youth events that are not in this state) there is no one to hold that coach accountable.

First let me say I think the people who ran Middle School State did a great job. In saying that Corbin is a good Arena but it is far from perfect. If the internet issues could be fixed and food was better then maybe it would be. But with everything running on Track wrestling which is totally on-line and the place having no signal for coaches or others to view what is coming up or brackets ever is a huge problem.  There is only one way to the floor so when a kid finishes his match and in wrestle backs by the time he gets to his sit sometimes within minutes he was called back to the floor for his next match. The updates on the screen are great but with it only in 3 spots and not big enough to see unless you just have someone standing there all day to watch it was hard to keep up sometimes. Maybe if it was announced like the old high school anytime someone is on a mat assignment it would help. Again I think the people running it did a fantastic job using the means they had at there disposal but access to everyone to internet would fix these types of issues.

The one entrance to the floor is great. Keeps people from trying to get down there that shouldn't be.

Seems like the internet was AT&T phones. Everyone I seen that was able to pull up Track had Verizon or another carrier.

As far as the snags go, you could always add the extra weekend before the ones you have now, so you do not run into the high school season.

The Venue is another thing that wouldn't be that hard to work around.  I know it is a long way to travel, but I believe the arena in Pikeville is available and is big enough. That doesn't need to be the permanent venue, but it could be used until a better option is found.

A 32 man bracket is already being used at the middle school tournament. It is just not full with only having 20 kids in it. I'm not sure what the exact rules are, but I don't think there are any restrictions as far as number of matches and time between matches since the middle school goes by USA wrestling. (I'm not 100% sure about that as I'm no longer involved with a middle school)

These are just ideas to think about and work toward trying to grow numbers in Kentucky. As another thread stated, it's easier to get more kids involved when they see their friends or classmates having success. So having more State Qualifiers now will, in the long run, be better for the sport by getting more kids involved.

Corbin is big enough to hold a 32 man bracket in 1 day like this year. Finals were over before 6. This is the type of venue that needs to hold these events. Big enough for the crowd, can lay 10 mats down (maybe more of you move the head table) and not on a dirt floor (Horse park)

Would be perfect for a 2 day boys and girls high school state championship
