  1. Seems like a stupid rule. Isn’t the state tournament supposed to be a celebration of the sport? Why would you not allow a kid to celebrate in the biggest tournament (for most) of the year? Is it because we have a soft generation that can’t handle loss?

How is Daviess County holding so high on the 120 when he’s only beat one ranked kid. He was on the way to getting tech’d by Ohio County’s boy and got a medical forfeit . He got pinned by the 28th 126 a couple weeks ago. The kid is a high future prospect and I’m not trying to take away from him but he has only faced three ranked opponents all year and it’s disrespectful to some of the 120’s beneath him.

Prove it on the mat kid. And if you happen to be the kids daddy then tell Junior to prove it the Matt.

As far as officiating went this year it wasn’t bad…definitely saw more inconsistencies in past years.
The stalling calls are just par for the course at this point, something coaches, wrestlers and parents just have to deal with. This is a topic that gets revisited after every state tournament.
Question, what is the correct call on a wrestler upper cutting, literally throwing a punch to the groin of their opponent? Said wrestler was in the top position and the punch from behind and between the legs.

The explanation given from the ref was it didn’t make contact so it wasn’t called. I M O that’s like saying someone take a swing at another person’s head but if it misses, it’s a no call? Is that right?

I saw a kid get uppercutted in the nose at the Semi state 2 165 final. All it was called is a 1 point unsportsmanlike. Who knows at this point.

I saw that match differently than you guys,  I thought the MS kid was definitely the aggressor for most of the match.  St. X kid could have been called for stalling several times but wasnt.  Locking in double unders and pushing out of bounds, i saw that called as a stall on the pusher all weekend.  I felt bad for the MS kid.  Bad way to lose a finals match.  I will say i have seen that official blow alot of matches and has a huge ego problem, when approached by coaches he is dismissive and condescending to them.  Just my opinion.

I would say you are being kind in your judgment of said official. Every interaction I have ever had with him has been negative. Guy acts pissed all the time for no reason.

  5. As for the assistant ref, I did not see a single instance where the refs conferred and then changed a call. There were many times I thought they should and would after talking and saw many times where the body language of the assistant ref seemed to suggest that he did not agree, but not once did I see a call changed. Maybe it happened and I just missed it.

  6. Let’s be honest, in a 285 match that is 1-1 after six minutes there was more than two opportunities to call stalling. Calling it with 10 seconds left when a kid is double hooked seems out of whack.  The whole match was one big stall fest. Not questioning that there was stalling but why pick that moment?

Seems to me that a college could donate their arena and keep concessions or?
Moorehead, Lindsay Wilson, Wesleyan, Bellarmine, Midway, Northern, Murray? Couldn’t those others free up one weekend?
Didn’t Pikeville say they’d donate? It’s a long drive for West Ky, but it’s very nice.

Pikeville is very nice. Can walk from the hotels to the arena. Lots of restaurants. Far from the western end of the state, but If you’re coming to GRC what is another 2 hours for a better experience. I was at Ryle, the tournament was a mess. Weights were out of order, kids were confused on when to warm up. Stands were packed,  you had to literally climb over gear and each other to get to your seats.  I have been to  many a tournament at Ryle and they always run a quick top notch tournament, so I assumed the KHSAA was involved in running.

If it was communicable then it’s not just costing this young man his chance at state.  It could spread and impact many many others.

When my son wrestled if something was of question it was usually looked at by multiple officials and then if necessary the on-site medical person.

Ringworm and pimples never killed anyone. The angst that is causes is way worse than the actual affliction. There is nothing worse than going for 3 days without a decent meal just to have a ringworm pop up and make have to sit out

  9. Why can’t there be a panel of folks that make the call instead of just one person. We have seen it before where people in power use this to keep certain kids from competing. Grudges held and payback doled out in the form of making kids medically ineligible of stupid things like pimples. For that matter, I’ve never understood why ring worm was made as big a deal as it is. Certainly not a big enough deal to make a kid miss he senior year state tournament.

Let’s just cut the middle man and hand Union County 3 trophies while we are at it

If they are the best team year after year then I’d give fine with that. Let’s be honest, they are the best team so isn’t every thing else just participation trophies? I get that it helps grow the sport and that’s awesome, but if a 1A school routinely beats everyone in the state doesn’t that show that there isn’t a reason to have 3 divisions?

  11. Seems watered down. There are not that many schools with wrestling to begin with. Splitting three ways doesn’t give you the best duals possible. Call me old school but I liked it better when it was one tournament. You can’t tell me that a tournament with Union, PT, Great crossing, JC, Ryle, Walton V, Trinity wouldn’t have been better.

  12. To anyone complaining about little Johnny beating some one and not being ranked, or being 21 instead 16 please shut up. If little Johnny is good enough he will prove it on the mat and eventually he may be ranked. Daddy getting on here and bashing or questioning a guy who doesn’t even have a dog in the fight any more is not helping little Johnnys cause.

Thanks Ranger for doing the rankings. Most understand and appreciate the time.

  13. Consistency is what is needed most. I was only at Semi state 2 but saw Several matches were one referee would not call stalling when the bottom Man stood up and was not returned to the mat and then a referee on the next mat over would call it.  very confusing for the kids. Also watching a referee call pins at the “state tournament”  while standing up and tilting his head so he can kind of see what is going on is very disturbing. I see that general lack of effort as an insult to all the kids hard work and the sport itself.

I thought in the past the large and small schools finished in a dual.  I understand that they are technically in separate brackets, but it would’ve been fun to watch UC square off with Ryle.

The tournaments were at different locations.

I’m not complaining. I just wanna see the kids who win move up in the rankings. For some kids, being ranked high is the highlight for them. It’s okay, the same thing happened to me when i wrestled. Nobody wanted to rank me highly so I beat everyone that Ranger ranked ahead of me but that’s a part of wrestling. You’ll remember his name before it’s all said and done

20-0 isn’t always what it seems. It appears he has only actually wrestled 11 matches and at least three of those appear to be against what would be at best considered JV guys. 9 forfeits don’t count towards rankings. I know nothing about the kid, never laid eyes on him but him being ranked where he is with record he has against the competition he’s wrestled seems more than fair.

Why don’t you just cry a little more pal. You can cry all you want but the facts are if they turn 19 after the start of their senior year they’re eligible. That’s the rule and many teams across the state take advantage of that. Maybe if your team spent more time getting better, instead of making excuses why other teams are better than you, you wouldn’t be so bad. Which team do you root for?

I think he referring more kids that are 15 and half in middle school. The rule that a 15 year old is allowed wrestle in middle school is a stupid rule. There is zero legitimate reason for a kid to be in middle school at 15 and half and wrestling middle school kids. The physical differences between a 13 year old (the most kids are in 8th grade) and 15  year old for most people are stark.  If your middle school team full of high school age kids and wins a championship it’s not much to be proud of.

I don't want it to be a separate event. I just hate that a 7th or 8th grader can lose Saturday and just come back and beat up on 5th graders on Sunday.

If that’s the case then we should change the rule at middle school that allows a kid that should be in High school at 15 1/2 but is still in the 8th grade, to beat up on an 11 year old Or a 13 year true 8 th grader
