    Rankings 11-12-17

Agreed. I can tell you that I watched this kid earn it on Saturday. He beat a scrappy, tough kid that is two years older than him for 3rd place at his conference tournament. The kid he beat had just beat the number 3 ranked kid in the previous round. Who cares how old you are. Not only that, where is this kid going to competition if he doesn't wrestle middle school? I would imagine this kid would spend about a minute total on the mat in most youth tournaments and wind up with a gold medal and no good experience or learn anything to make him better from it.

    "Age cheating"

Agree that good is good at any age when talking about full grown men. But when men(19 year olds) are wrestling boys it certainly makes a difference. A good technically sound 15 year old will typically have an uphill battle against a well developed 19 year old man. If I were in your shoes i certainly don't think I would bring attention to the fact that my kid was a sixteen year old freshman. It does two things, it says to most that he is most likely academically challenged and it diminishes his athletic acheivements by admitting that he older than a lot of his competition. Someone who wins a state title as a freshman when they are 14 is certainly more impressive than a 16 year old doing the same thing as a freshman.

    "Age cheating"

I'm pretty sure you missed the point lionheart. Most kids are 14 as freshman. A 16 year old freshman should be well adjusted, He two years of growth on everyone else his age. That also means he is 19 as senior which is a clear advantage over folks that are only 17. Most men continue grow and develop into their late teens early twenties.

    Fargo - rant #3 - the ugly

Sounds like maybe there needs to be more coaches clinics to teach the basics of the styles to the coaches who don't know anything about them. I would fall into the category of are youth coach who knows virtually nothing about Greco very little about freestyle. I only learned folk style when I wrestled so I can only teach that style but would certainly be willing to learn more about the other styles. And baseball and softball are two different sports. But you do you see coaches teach kids how to throw curveballs screwballs fastballs and every other kind pitch so they have a large arsenal to throw their opponent. From what I read on these forums Greco and freestyle certainly help kids and their folkstyle. If more coaches knew more about it maybe they could show some of these types of styles one day a week of their youth practices just a thought.

    Fargo - rant #3 - the ugly

Exposure in education at the youth level would be the best way to promote freestyle and Greco. Why not have more freestyle and Greco tournament during the season for the youth kids? that way you have their full attention and anttendance because it is during season and you're not competing with other sports. My son wrestled Greco and freestyle for the first time at the state tournament at Campbell County this year. In the previous years we always had baseball it just so happened that this particular weekend was open on our baseball schedule . He absolutely loved Greco and wound up taking second. I think that it got him hooked on it and he would love to wrestle more of that style but he is a very committed baseball player. So his issue is not that he's not committed to wrestling or that we are not committed to taking him to practices but it is a timing issue with other sports. I would imagine this is an issue for a lot of other kids and also for parents who may have other children who also play spring or summer sports. I guess my point is after this giant ramble is why not teach this more during the season to the youth kids so they are exposed to it and understand the styles and would be more apt to show up at the tournaments in the spring.

    Brackets are out!

I have a question hopefully some one can answer as I am very ignorant about college wrestling.in looking at the brackets it appears there are byes in several weights. Why would they not fill those spots with someone?
  8. Does anyone know if there is been a remote weigh in set up for Northern Kentucky yet?
  9. Do you have remote weigh in locations set yet? We are in Northern Ky and have several kids who would like to attend this tournament.

    Region 6 Team Race

Pretty sure I heard Camels had five guys ruled out for state duals qualifier day off tourney due to skin issues and some unqualified medical professionals (aka referees) over ruling doctors notes. And every one is entitled to a down year every thirty years or so.

    Mr and Mrs Tyler Baines

Much thanks to Tyler and his whole crew. They did an awesome job! This weekend was an awesome celebration of our sport. Any who says otherwise or has negative comments are clueless as to the amount of effort and sweat that goes into a massive event like this. For it to run as smooth as it did was amazing. Thanks again!

    Distance for district

With the attrition rate as high as it is in this sport, youth AND middle school has to be about numbers. As a parent/coach of a kid who is 10 and is in his 4th year of wrestling and #4 on the depth chart on our team, I would hate see the district limited to one wrestler. He is in that stage where he is beating most of kids his age at youth tournaments and getting beat by the middle school kids. He went two and out at our district tournament with one match he was clearly outclassed in and another he lost in overtime. The best wrestlers still won and advanced and a young kid got some good experience a local tournament wrestling older competition that he will likely see again in the coming years. In my opinion that is still helping the quality of competition while allowing for quantity. There are also a lot great kids who burn out at the middle school level and never make it to high school. Inevitably the second and third string guys fill those roles and a lot of times go on to be great wrestlers. If you weed them all out early you wind up with holes on your high school team when your middle school hammers flame out .

    Question...Tap Out?

This a frustrating situation. I had it happened to one of my youth wrestlers this weekend. Took a kid down to his back and the defensive guy started crying so the refs stopped the match after a three count. My guy had a deep half in and the match was going to be over if it continued. The other coach was beside himself because my guy was given 3 points. He thought they should just start over on their feet because his guy had his feelings hurt. Some of this issue is coaching. Need to teach kids to take their medicine and not squeal because they get tossed to their back. These were little kids (7 and 8) but you have to teach them young that this not a sport for the weak hearted. I was a referee for a very short time a long time ago and had several occasions where a guy cried out on his back in a legal move and I let the match play out because I could tell the guy on his back was safe. He might have been in pain, but was in no risk of being injured. Big difference in my opinion between pain and injury.
