  1. As far as officiating went this year it wasn’t bad…definitely saw more inconsistencies in past years.
The stalling calls are just par for the course at this point, something coaches, wrestlers and parents just have to deal with. This is a topic that gets revisited after every state tournament.
Question, what is the correct call on a wrestler upper cutting, literally throwing a punch to the groin of their opponent? Said wrestler was in the top position and the punch from behind and between the legs.

The explanation given from the ref was it didn’t make contact so it wasn’t called. I M O that’s like saying someone take a swing at another person’s head but if it misses, it’s a no call? Is that right?

Obviously, the KHSAA is a governing body. But they also have to be prudent, and run like a business. They can’t ignore budgets, and have to make smart business decisions. They also have to answer to the BOE, and ultimately the state government. Thare not an independent organization with complete autonomy and free will.

I would agree they need to at least ask the arena’s if they are interested in hosting. But being interested is only the first part.

Is it possible to get the BOE and/or the State government involved in the conversation at least? We need an alliance..KHSAA may not be autonomous but it feels like the sport of wrestling is consistently getting the short end of the stick by them.

  3. Been around the sport in KY a while…long enough to remember the Horse Park venue. When my kid qualified for state and I walked into that building I was legit overwhelmed. It was like nothing I had ever seen before and the experience of the whole thing from the tournament of champions to the simultaneous matches, the fan all cheering on their wrestlers, the face off/podium at the end…it was amazing. It was what the cream of the crop should have when then achieve that level of competition. Anything else is quite frankly a disservice to the participants, the high school programs and KHSAA, because in the end  anything less makes KHSAA look bad whether they want to believe that or not.

Every year we have this discussion and there seems to be an impenetrable gap between KY Wrestling and KHSAA and what ever conversations have taken place between the two have yielded little progress on a solution.
Just a question: is media attention to this issue an option or would it make things worse?

That trip back tilt was awesome. He almost pulled it off again. One side note, there was a stalemate called that was extremely questionable. Deck was about to hook Bates' leg and would have secured a takedown. The stalemate was called way too quick.

Agreed, but the action in that match was superb! Both wrestlers wanted that title.

  5. Consistency of calls needs improvement. When you have  a ref disqualify a kid for a particular move/hold during season then allow a kid to pin another in the state tournament with the same move/hold, something isn’t right.  Either the wording of that rule is too vague or the ref doesn’t understand the rule.

Also, I know video reviews would be nearly impossible for all matches at State but at the very least the finals should have that option. Our kids work hard to reach that opportunity and deserve every chance to earn the title with the least amount of human error.

  6. My kid is coming late to this party and we were unfortunately one of those families who didn’t pay the deposit, not out of spite but simply because we didn’t have it at the time. We are not opposed to paying our way but it’s unfortunate that if there is no team (schoolboy, cadet or junior) that a goal my kid set to try and get selected  will not come to pass. He loves to wrestle. Loves to learn. Gets his butt handed to him often but going to Fargo would have broadened his horizons.

Our high school program went through a coaching change and neither the previous or new coach pushed off season wrestling at all. We just found out about camps last year. Found out about Fargo when I read about it on this forum the week of.
