My opinion would be yes, as long as he isn't your middle school starter. Why should he be punished for being good in the 5th grade?

Yeah, we let him compete, that was kind of the consensus we came to is he wasn't our MS starter and 90% of his tournaments were at the youth level. Curious to see how he does at State since everybody in his weight class (92) are 7th & 8th graders, ought to be interesting, will be good experience.

Just my opinion but I think this is a great way to do this. My son is not a middle school starter but has competed in a couple of middle school tournaments this year so that he can get some different competition than the youth level provides him and to get him ready for that next step. Now his season isn't 60% middle school either at this point.  He is currently between levels, needs a little more than some youth tourneys but not at middle school level just yet. I think for State Duals as long as the wrestlers are not middle school starters and are in 5th grade then they deserve to compete for their team. I also agree with the rule of being top 6 in middle school state would disqualify them from entering Youth State tourney. Just my opinion but I think it is wrong to not allow an Elementary school age child to participate in a Youth Dual because they may be a stronger wrestler than most elementary kids but yet not strong enough for Middle School yet.

I agree and that's why I put that statement in there about 5th graders that are Middle School starters. Now, another decision I had struggled with is we have a 5th grader that didn't wrestle Middle School all year but practices with the Middle School and Youth and we entered him in MS Districts for the experience and he placed 2nd qualifying for Region, he goes to Region and places 3rd qualifying for MS State. What do you do in this instance, now obviously if he places top 6 on Saturday he wont compete Sunday but do you let a 5th grader like that compete at the Youth State Dual?

This may be for a different post but I think it would be good to have a disclaimer for the youth State events only (Duals and Individual), that if a wrestler has participated in 60% or more of his/her matches at MS level tourneys then he/she is ineligible for youth State events.  Understand the top 6 placer at MS State caveat.  There are points of discussion to be made for or against this viewpoint.   To me just a way to level the mat for kids who aren't yet ready for MS level competition and for those who are MS level/caliber.

Nope, you are spot on....we decided to cut it off at 5th graders BUT I still put a statement in there that they could not be Middle School Starters since many of your lighter, 75-86, 4th and 5th graders are starters for their Middle School. thank you for your input...this is definitely what we are looking for to better this event for the future.

Understand.  Realize this was first year for event.  Maybe residency requirement area for improvement for next year.  Kind of defeats purpose of it being for Kentucky wrestlers.  Otherwise could have northern KY teams add a few ringers from Cincy to roster, or western KY teams add kids from Illinois, etc. just for the purpose of winning State Duals title.  Not saying those programs would ever do that.

Yes sir, it was a discussion that was had but in the Youth bylaws residency for competing in KY tournaments is not addressed, only for Youth State, so since he was a paying member of the club it was decided to be allowed this time around. But you make a very good point and that might be something we spell out for next year. Thank you for your input, this is what we are looking for to better this event next year and years after that.

Yet he only had one match all day and after seeing that match he would clearly out match any wrestlers in that division. I know the flyer said K-5 so is it possible he was older than the other kids but in the 5th grade?

I spoke to the Scott Raney from Maritime inquiring about him and Scott assured me he is a fifth grader just a freak of nature and I have no reason to ever question Scott. Because of his size and age they have a hard time finding him matches through out the year, when you look at him you would ask if he drove himself to the tournament but when you watch him interact with other kids and his teammates he acts like 11 y.o. / 5th grader. He could of definitely been older but I didn't ask teams to provide birth certificates for the event BUT maybe we add that next year just as we did for State this year.

Sounds like your state duals was a big success!  In Indiana the Elementary Team State Duals has become a destination event for clubs.  We didn't start out with 14 teams though.  Kudos to you all.  I think ours started with 8 teams originally.  The duals have become so popular with clubs that we went to a class system this year.  Large schools and small schools.

We had 16 teams represented by large schools and 7 represented by small schools.

Ours is K-6th (we allowed pre-K this year for the first time/hard to get those 40 lbers).

We allow 23 kids per team with 17 weight classes.

All kids must be from the school district of the club with exception to home schooled kids that live in the district or wrestlers that attend a private school but live within the district.

We essentially have 3 sizes of schools involved in wrestling in Indiana. 1A, 2A, and 3A.

For the Elem Team State meet we allow 3A schools 2 wildcards (kids outside of the club/district), 2A schools 3 wildcards, and 1A schools 4 wild cards.

We do a parade of teams before the national anthem.  Some clubs make banners or coat of arms.  Its really cool!

Personally I have seen tremendous growth in my wrestlers as they get competition early in the season.  My kids have about 20 matches in before the individual season starts.

Glad to hear that you guys had a successful tournament!

Keep growing wrestling in your state!

After talking to you about this at the Purler Camp you all hosted it became a goal for this year and continue to grow on...appreciate the information.

To be honest MLee what we say and think on this site is meaningless.

It's good for maybe getting a feel for something and maybe hearing some ideas, but as I mentioned I believe that the elected officials should be the ones making those decisions. Those people were voted because they were believed to be the best to make these decisions.  Once they make the decision then follow through prove me or whoever believed against it wrong or prove I am right.  Then change or keep it the same.

We may not like KHSAA's decisions on everything but they make the decision then stick with it. Unless a huge outcry is made.  They try it, see if it works then moves on to the next year either changing again or keeping it.

But what do I know I'm just an old fart just hanging around with barely the energy to read what is being written on this site let alone go out and do anything about it. :(

Goo, I actually take copious notes as I scroll through these forums to see what the consensus is out in the field, like I said this is only my first year on the KSWA board and I am still forming ideas and thoughts fluidly. I know in Central KY we have discussed having a coaches meeting to get a consensus in our area so we speak with a unified voice on as many topics as possible when it comes time for he KSWA coaches meeting.

Much like our government. Each district or region should vote for a representative.  That way each district or region is represented. This is not rocket science its the same way the high school does it.  Why does everyone need to reinvent the wheel.  Follow the high school lead.

I have said this for years the middle school should be a mirror image of the high school. Or a close enough image.

I think I see what your saying Goo, so when issues are brought up from the field (coaches) the we the board memebers are the only ones that vote on it not the collective group? That does make sense, although I personally like to collect as many opinions and thoughts from the field before making a decision and the only way to do that is max participation from the collective group. I would love to get emails from the field if somebody isn't able to make the meetings.....this is my first year on the board and I have my own initial platform but I am also trying to build and improve that platform with opinions from across the field.
