  1. I think all of these are great points. I too believe there will be plenty of kids do this for different reasons. Yes it is a local district final say but from what I read it is all or nothing. Either everyone who applies is accepted or nobody is. The local board can't say this kid can and this one can't regardless of the kid or parents reason. I like many have a few kids that have spoken about doing this and my answer was simple. Its something that should be decided between the kid and parent not me. We like many had a terrible season with quarantine after quarantine so I see there point. For some like GentleBeard was saying had Fs every where and just struggled to stay a float so if that helps a GPA or with maturity then I get it. One kids answer was simply he was young and has nothing better to do while some are just no way I want to repeat and have 2 more years instead of being a senior next year. I think we will see some we never thought would and some should just won't. It will be interesting how fast these districts say yes or no because my understanding of the rule is June is deadline to apply.

I just want to recognize 3 guys that deserve it, because they too will not get their recognition in person at state. Every year we honor our Hall of Fame class before the finals. This year we inducted Coach Joe Carr Sr., Coach Chris McCoy, and Coach Tim Ruschell. These men have given much of their life to wrestling and to developing kids into adults. While I know they are all humble beyond words and it doesn't bother them, I hate they miss be honored in front of everyone like our Hall of Fame members of the past. Thank you again for all you contributions to Kentucky Wrestling.

Congrats to you all and thanks for all your hard work and devoted service to your communities and kids as well as our sport.

I personally think our officiating Saturday in Semi-state #1 was solid ;)

This weekend wasn't my Regionals it was last week and yes I had no problems this week. But more importantly I am just saying in general this should never be a problem we have if training was required.

Oh I agree 100% To many people argue judgment calls.   You can't argue if someone was out of bounds or pinned.  There is no way people can see that from the stands.  If it is a technical call that is called incorrectly then the coach should be able to point that out and it get changed.

Otherwise leave these guys alone on social media.  They have a huge job to try and get correct.  Coaches should and most do, talk to the your referee's after the event, about what they saw may need improvement and question calls after the fact in a calm manner. This helps the young guys get better. Not badgering them on social media and trying to get them banned from officiating.

I agree big shortage of officials and it makes some new people who don't know wrestling at all start just to earn money. At regions we had a guy that didn't know what a Peterson was and awarded 2 near fall for the other guy and no reversal or any points for the kid that hit it. When explaining this to the ref he just said nope. Now it didn't cost the kid the match but could have. I know we need new guys but we have got to find a way to get them trained some before doing post season and even high school matches period. I get it we all have to be patient and I am thankful we have enough to at least wrestle but we have to find a way to start training them better.

  5. I was just curious mainly about Freestyle and Greco State if we have dates and locations yet but also other dates of events. Does anyone have any camps/Clinics or other wrestling tourneys set for this off-season. We the season pushed back into our spring it won't take long before summer is upon us and I want to make sure we are ready to get training.

Where does it say coaches are being charged? I see where the team party is limited to two coaches (which makes sense with attendance limits) unless the team has more than 6 wrestlers, in which case you get three.  I also see where coaches passes aren’t accepted, but that’s not unusual for postseason events. But I don’t see where it says coaches with the team party have to pay.  I hope I’m right, because charging coaches would just be flat wrong.

As far as cost of tickets, isn't this roughly what you'd pay for a one day admission to the state tourney in a normal year? No it's not cheap, but it's not out of line of what it's cost in the past. It's also in line with what you'd pay at other state tournaments. When my son's team made it to the state baseball tournament, and advanced to the final four, 3 games+3 days of parking for two people cost us over $100.

First 2 coaches are free and 3 are if you have 6 kids but any other coach on any staff has to purchase a ticket and the message was not to let your coaches get parents tickets before the parents. Which that makes since but your coaches either have to buy what tickets aren’t used from your parents or wait till they go on sell for the public is my understanding. Either way if you have a total of 4 coaches and 3 or 4 kids with 3 mats all of those coaches could or Would be either coaching on a mat or getting a kid ready. Attendance isn’t a problem or there wouldn’t be any open to the public and they would just give them to the extra coaches after all was bought by parents and before they went on sell to the public. It’s a money thing ADs and Administration also have to purchase tickets.

Forcing any coach past #3 to pay is clearly a money grab by those in charge. Which I could almost live if they would have used some semblance of common sense in seeding the Semi-States. It is clear however, that they couldn’t give two craps about the wrestlers, coaches, or fair and equal competition. Money is their only motivation. Highly disappointed with the powers that be.

We had to buy coach #3 as well because if you don't have 5 kids you can only get 2 coaches free. It just shows why schools struggle so much to find coaches first the pay is horrible for the hours spent we all know that's not why we do it and so do they. Then they want to charge you for stuff and show more disrespect.

A post on the Indiana forums got me thinking about how school's all time teams would look. I decided to use the "modern era" of 32 man state brackets as the cutoff. Kept the weight classes lined up, even though some overlap.

    Union:

    103/106 Zeke Escalera Champ
    112/113 Trayce Eckman* Champ
    119/120 Saul Ervin 3x Champ
    125/126 Jayce Carr 2x Champ
    130/132 Brock Ervin 5x Champ
    135/138 Bryce Sheffer 4x Champ
    140/145 Caleb Ervin 3x Champ
    145/152 Mitch Ervin 2x Champ
    152/160 Dalton Russelburg* 2x Champ
    160/170 Stephen Little* Champ
    171/182 Micah Ervin 2x Champ
    189/195 Thomas Buckman Champ
    215/220 Darius Moore* 2nd
    275/285 Mathias Ervin 3x Champ

    *Still in High School
Champs left off: Jarvis (Rudd) Elam, Trae Blackwell, Aaron Carr, Isaac Ervin, Luke Ervin, Max Ervin, Jackson Oxford, Isaac Thomas, Jake Insko, maybe more?

It is a great group but Bryce Sheffer never wrestled at state higher than 126/128 but he was great. Not sure on the rest of the weight classes. Again awesome group an dc could maybe add so many more to it and take away some and still be great.

  9. I said this yesterday on a different thread. With increased numbers allowed let top 3 from each semi final and make it a 12 man tournament. Top 4 seeds go to all semi final winners give them a bye and seed them. Then seed the rest of the 8 remaining wrestlers and place top 8. This will solve the problem of true 2nd and the top ranked kids would have a shot of getting to the podium. We still have two weeks before regionals maybe they will see this and change it for the better.

And yet no changes to the format to a 16 man bracket to have the best at State with no chance of a true 2nd in semi state.

Not sure about the whole state but we went to 40% attendence as of Friday for all indoor events. With that being said if we could just take the top 3 in each semi state tourney and make the finals a 12 man bracket. That would still solve the over night as it can be finished in one day and the problem of who is better to take 2 or 3 take them both. Each winner of Semi gets seeded and a bye. Then seed the remainder of the kids and wrestle to top 8 problem solved. Wont happen but should.

Also as for rankings our 113 Chance Carmon/Daviess is out for year. Jaxon Winkler at 220 will be our 197 and last I was told the Owensboro kid at that weight Austin Gough is no longer wrestling. Just to help with kids in and out.

  11. I do have to say out of all the things I have seen. Some bad and some whatever but not wrestling back to a true 2nd is the biggest problem to me. If all the other stuff is going to happen and only two move on so be it. But we should make sure at least it’s the best two on that day and a 2 vs 3 to finish the day would do that easily. What can it hurt. Unless they had already faced each other in early rounds of this tournament. Not really sure any of our opinions matter at this point though.

We really need to stop comparing wrestling to basketball. A basketball game takes about an hour of actual playing time, with less than 50 players, coaches etc. probably can get those games done with less than 150 total people in the gym including spectators. You then clear the gym, sanitize, and move on to the next one.  Even a 16 man wrestling tournament not only more than doubles the number, it increases the time these people stay confined together in a gym/arena. It’s the sheer numbers that are required to hold a wrestling tournament in an indoor confined space that’s creating the issue....not the KHSAA’s lack of love, understanding or respect for wrestling.

Just to clear up my message was not meant to slam KHSAA or basketball. It was meant to be simply put a thanks for at least allowing us the opportunity to wrestle regardless of what is thought of our sport or not. I am thrilled for my kids that they get to wrestle at all. Sorry if it was taken the wrong way.

These like many others are all great ideals. But KHSAA has already made contact with schools hosting regionals to see about clearing way to backing up regionals a week maybe two. I know this because I got an email yesterday from the host school in our region letting us know that this was more than likely to happen to make room for semi state was the message. KHSAA wouldn’t be making these calls unless they have a plan they are trying to put in motion. I believe we all need to get ready for a normal regional with 4 moving on to semi state. Then either a 8 man or 16 man tourney from there as state. I believe we will see 8 man. Do we like it no but the message has been made loud and clear it’s for one year deal with it. Face it we aren’t basketball which seems there tourney will be same as always. I agree there is lots of things we should or could do to include just have it as normal but we should brace for the worse it’s not going to happen we just aren’t a sport that people care to support as much as the others. I never seen any person on that board who is a wrestling person or truly understood the sport loves the sport or spoke up for the sport. That’s the problem here. For me I always said I would just be happy if they let us have a season/post season and they did. So let’s just be glad we had the opportunity to wrestle this season because it is what it is and nothing much we can do but prepare our kids for whatever they give us on Wednesday.

  14. I think as coaches we need figure a good plan together and everyone send in the same email. If not the KHSAA will be over loaded with to much data to go through and just figure out what they want to do. And I believe that would leave us with a 16 man tourney ran in a high school in Lexington like a Frederick Douglass or something. Nothing against that school or any school but it’s not an arena nor a 32 man tourney. Regardless of where it’s at if there is an arena that a can host what we want. Then if someone near there or who has contact with these locations needs to do just that see if available to host. So we have all the correct info and then as many that will send a uniform message out to KHSAA. Just my thoughts on this.

  15. My take from watching and listening to the meeting yesterday was a little different. From what I heard or understood there is no way we will have a 32 man bracket with or without fans. We can either figure a way to do a split of some kind Big School/Small School  so there are two 16 man tourneys or even a East/West split two tourneys they called Covid 1 & 2 or we will be forced to take just top 2 kids from ever region and no alternates. That leaves a lot of kids out. No matter what our personal thoughts are on a Big/Small split. For this year if we want to keep as many kids in the tourney as possible we need to express our thoughts that way because who knows what a east-west or north-south split even would look like. Either way I am glad there was no vote yesterday because I believe if there was it would have been just 2 from each region period. I challenge us all to figure something out that will suit what those guys on the board will approve that we can all live with because at least we are getting a season and would be nice to finish with a great post season. Then next year we can hopefully get back to the norm.

  16. With the thought in mind that none of us know what KHSAA will do or when they will tell us. Here is another thought that we could see happen. If they decide to stay with the normal format of a 32 man bracket and keeping in mind that its been said we are not looking to reline this season as well as it is each district choice to wrestle or not. KHSAA could just say wrestle post season the way it sits. Each Region would wrestle with whomever is left and if they only have 3 spots then the wrestle to see the seeding for that region for the state bracket.  With that being said the 4th spot would be random draw from the alternates of the other regions which is what they are for. I am not saying I am for this or any of the options just saying it wouldn't surprise me at all to see this happen either. Its the easy way.
