    Regional realignment

First let me say I think the people who ran Middle School State did a great job. In saying that Corbin is a good Arena but it is far from perfect. If the internet issues could be fixed and food was better then maybe it would be. But with everything running on Track wrestling which is totally on-line and the place having no signal for coaches or others to view what is coming up or brackets ever is a huge problem. There is only one way to the floor so when a kid finishes his match and in wrestle backs by the time he gets to his sit sometimes within minutes he was called back to the floor for his next match. The updates on the screen are great but with it only in 3 spots and not big enough to see unless you just have someone standing there all day to watch it was hard to keep up sometimes. Maybe if it was announced like the old high school anytime someone is on a mat assignment it would help. Again I think the people running it did a fantastic job using the means they had at there disposal but access to everyone to internet would fix these types of issues.
  2. There are always lots of great camps across the nation. Different people will tell you different ones are the best. Truth they are all great for different reasons. Purler has many good camps all year and I have kids that have attended. Jeff Jordan another great place to go. These are big week long camps that cost a bunch. There are also weekend clinics you can go to at a lot of colleges usually and some could be local. I take my kids every year to Union Co Camp its a 4 day camp either the second or third week of June. To me its the best camp for the money nation wide. There is always plenty of colleges there to teach kids and former NCAA and NIAI National Qualifiers and Champions every year. I have seen I-Mar there when my kid was in school and was back this past year. I have seen Penn St Lee there as well as many others. It only cost $175 that pays for training lunch and dinner as well as a place to stay if you let them know you are out of state or need help with that. There is about 200 kids from as many as 11 states there every year. Some are great some not some nationally ranked some not so there is someone for everyone. We also go to the small NIAI weekend camps which usually cost between $50-$75 all over our state at high schools or the colleges.
  3. This is good advice and I did the same with my son. He was a 3 sport kid through his freshman year but wrestling was always where he should be. I just told him to look around at the other kids playing football, find one who is same as you think you will be your senior year. If that kid is playing all the time and living what you think will make you happy then great I support whatever you think but if not then you might want to consider looking at everything differently. My son stopped playing football after that year and just played baseball for fun not for school. He was a happier kid and still trained all the time but it was his choice.

Due to no interest the 1 day Jeff Jordan Clinic set for this Saturday Oct 8th is canceled. Sorry I had hoped it would be a great thing to bring these guys to our area for 1 day but not a good time I guess. Sorry for those couple that did show a interest. College coaches on the floor at state.

It would be great but KHSAA wont care about our thoughts only money for the tickets and I guess I see there point a little. I mean that could be a lot of free tickets. But still should be done. I always thought it was bad High school coaches cant get in either if dont have a kid wrestling which is also a bad thing.

ATTENTION Wrestling fans! All Star Classic is back!

Ranger thank you first off for all you do for all the kids and fans across the state. As for this debate or disagreement I don't see how on one hand someone can complain that this event is trying to make wrestling step on anyone. From where I sit its football and other sports that are always going on. From 7 on 7 to now travel leagues during all seasons. Now that doesn't so much effect me but does step on each other all the time. Lets be honest here we might not like it but all sports in high school overlap and run extra off-season stuff that sometimes leaves dual sport kids out. They all have to pick which to play at certain times. Weather it be travel baseball or summer Basketball, 7 on 7 football or Baseball or summer basketball or Fargo is it fair. Yes it is and some will decide not to do this sport and do that one its the way it is year around. Kids that love them all find a way to make it work and they will miss this or that sometimes move on. So it might not be true #1 vs #2 and so on but it is some of the best in the state getting their time in the show. Thanks again Ranger.

    2022 State recap

I don't believe there is a coach anywhere that wouldn't want to have a few elite kids mixed with a couple really good ones and the rest above or average kids, but in reality most teams just dont have that and really only a few do. I have done this coaching thing for a while now (18 years) and that by no means makes me the guy with all the answers. I coach all kids in our program from Pre-K to Seniors and have watched us grow over the years. I coach all the ages because we have nobody else to do it. The school board says if you want a feeder you coach it so I do with the help of my other 2 coaches. I say this because I think its the same for a lot of non traditional wrestling schools I see every year. They don't have numbers and sometimes no help. For me my numbers have grown and we are a better team over the past few years but what I wouldn't call a good team. We are average with some really good kids but no elite ones. I have a team full of non committed wrestlers and parents. First and foremost parents are what has to get committed because if they aren't the kid wont be. I agree the all day tourneys are a bad thing. Unless all your kids are winning every tourney and everyone is totally bought in it can hurt numbers. For us we started to grow in keeping kids when we switched to duals over individual tourneys which helped in many areas. First faster days, then more matches for everyone and even JV because most of the time you can fill in other teams holes with back-ups This allows my JV kids to usually get 25-30 matches a year at least. Last the team starts to grow together as a unit. So we only wrestle usually one individual tourney a year just so our kids have some experience in them for regionals. As for JV tourneys we just don't do them at all. Truth if my younger kids are going to be wrestling kids that are wrestling varsity anyways at JV tourneys why not just go wrestle a varsity match. We can all have our thoughts but as long as anyone who isn't a state medalist can wrestle JV its not really JV. I can go on a lot about why I don't like JV but will leave that to another day. I am not so sure I agree with wrestling a few years back was better than it is now, but everyone has their own beliefs there too. I know we did have a few studs back then but I would say we have that now too and I think maybe more depth these days. Before we had just a few kids at a few elite programs which we still have all of those today, but have added more like Paducah Tillman, Walton Vernon just to many two. There are more that didn't have those guys years ago. So in all I think KY wrestling has gotten better not worse. I think we just have to build numbers and keep them then the cream will continue to find each other and rise to the top.

    Memorable banquet awards

We give a coaches award we call it the Panther Award it has been given in the past to kids that just always show up for anything and everything we ask of them. Even when they dont have to, or to a kid who just works extra hard even though he isnt a starter or even good but encourages others by the fight he or she has and the way they work to better themselves and others. You pick the kid or kids in some years that you think deserve something even though they didnt win matches. We usually sit around as coaches and ask the question who would you pick and why then as a staff we vote on who is most deserving or do we give out 2 of them and why. This year we have 2 one for a young lady who has worked hard even though she was the only female and had to have back surgery but gave it all. The second to a kid we just knew would never make it the first week but is still here and has more fight in him than any kid we have now we just have to teach him how to wrestle.

Middle school state > high school

As far as the venue the place was really nice. My parents got a hotel the day before and was 5 mins away from arena of course they were super expensive also not the nicest place but got one. The problem I see is the internet was horrible with way to many delays and its not Lexington so wont be happening as stated before. In saying that I find it funny the Dungeon was mentioned on this thread because I told my assistant coach it reminded me of Frankfort in a lot of ways. As for the Middle School tourney I think it was a good location to have it just need to work out the internet problems, the communication on weigh-in issues could have been better and the food had very limited choices. All which are easy fixes I would think. Again I was pleasantly surprised.

    Top picks for Middle School

If thats the case then they werent 15 to start 8th grade nor 16 did they turn during 8th grade because if they were that would make them 16 to start freshman year which is 19 for senior year. So maybe they just thought kids were 15 and 16 when they were actually 14 and 15 all good.

    Top picks for Middle School

First I have no dog in the fight just been coaching a long time and will say this about the age subject. If you truly do have a 8th grader that will turn 16 before he is out of the 8th grade or before his freshman year starts. That might be allowed but a little helpful info for you people that are bothered by this info or rules to know. The same kid will not be allowed to wrestle their senior year of high school as they must not turn 19 before Aug 1 of their senior year. If they are which these kids will be they are not allowed to play any high school sport with no exceptions.

    State first round?

I said this the other day and it still holds true I believe for a lot of us coaches and fans. I hated most things about the Horsepark from its to cold for kids to weigh in with doors open to dirt floors but regardless of what we call or don't call their tourney none of us like where we are I believe including KHSAA. So name it call it whatever you want but now that mask are gone or optional for all lets all just hope that money will get back where it should be and we can find a better place to host and get back to real normal next season or in the near future.

    Semi state seeding

Yes I agree thats why I said if the state would ask them to do so. I knew other states did this just wasnt sure which ones so thanks for the input as well. Who knows maybe someone high enough will see it and help with this problem.
  24. Raiders Wrestling

    Semi state seeding

Track has its problems and not a big fan but it really doesn't matter if not for two things one when someone wins that shouldn't and two seeing a match up we want to be semis or finals. Truth we cant fix any of that because its truly out of our hands. What would help is if the other issues with track were to be fixed. I don't see any reason track cant make it so you can not print your next weight sheet till after you not only put in your weights as it is now but your matches and update records. It would be a easy fix for track to do this if they wanted or was asked by the state but its just not important enough to the ones who could maybe make that happen. And as stated before there is no plenty for not using track you see it all the time even at regionals kids seeded with a 0-0 or 3-1 when you know they wrestled more than that.
