All The complaining! Well, I have one....no make that 2. Hell, I have more than that! This was my first year going to youth tournaments with my 2 Grandchildren. one in first grade one in second. most were in Ohio. some ran better than others, but both children seemed to be in competitive brackets most of the time. Then came Regionals They were held at Woodhill middle school. There is no way to explain the over crowded tiny Gym. Not only was the maximum occupancy number overfilled by at least a factor of 3 but there was nowhere for the spectators to sit. so crowds of people were standing all around the mats, so people who did get a seat in the stands could not see a match. It was a free for all. The two boys having the same last name were placed in the wrong brackets. Which was great for the older, bigger of the two as he dominated his bracket. The younger, smaller one was crushed. It did not demoralize him, But I have heard his eyes lit up when he was told he would not be facing the same kids at state! Watch em get the two mixed up again. Oh did I mention the bathroom had 2 stalls and 2 Urinals for aprox. 400+ males. I have no info on the female experience.

    New Wrestling Programs for 2016-2017

Ballard had a good wrestling program back in the day. I lost to a state champ from there at state my junior year (1975) 132lbs. Did you mean Highlands High school in Ft. Thomas? I always wondered why they have never started a program. Newport Catholic always had a outstanding program as well when Brother Joe Wilhelm was at the helm.

    New Wrestling Programs for 2016-2017

Sad, There was a doctor here in Maysville who's son wrestled and I understand he volunteered to donate a new set of wrestling mats to the school to start a program and was rejected. The son then wrestled for CC 2 counties away. and did very well from what I understand.

I like it! But I would not know how you would get a school with no mats anywhere close to make it happen. I live in Lewis County there is not any teams in Mason, Lewis, Fleming, Bracken, Robertson, Carter , Rowan, Bath or Nicolas County's to my knowledge. That's a Huge geographical area to haul mats to and from.

The last time I attended the state duels, both large and small school events were held in the same venue (Montgomery County) then the winners of both divisions competed. I assume this will not occur with different venues.
  7. Key word in your statement is ADULT
  8. Yes, as a matter of fact that is what I must now go to do. I'm happy to leave the confines of my comfortable abode, out in the blowing snow. To do my part in providing you with the electricity you need to keep pecking away on your keyboard, and lights and heat in the gym. My small contribution to all of you.

I believe Bryan took 1st at the Hammer and Anvil tournament last weekend in Brown Co. Ohio. I do not know young Mr. Sallee but I will pray that he has a speedy and complete recovery.

I saw a Great movie a long time ago that had a horseman in it. He was a revered cowboy. the name of the movie was "The man from snowy river. a must see for horse lovers
  16. My mistake, Angel lost to Fausz when he was a sophomore. And I would guess the reason he is ranked above Erdman is because he is returning 138lb. Champion and Logan is moving up 2 weight classes. But I cannot dismiss AJ or Trent Johnson either. Heck even Brian Spahr has an outside chance, albeit remote in this field.
  17. To answer your first 2 questions. 1) yes. 2) without a doubt. as 2 of my grandchildren have embarked on the 3rd generation of wrestling in the state of Kentucky. Now, while your post was eloquent, and I enjoyed the read immensely. You fail to understand the fact that the favorites do not always win. With your superior knowledge and remarkable understanding of the sport I'm sure you can recall and explain who and how a person who wrestled JV all season won a state championship by beating the kid who was ranked #1 all season in the finals. Without wrestling a Varsity match before regionals? A hint: the Kid he beat was named Cooper and he was from Simon Kenton. It would not be even remotely as big of a upset if Vasquez beats Erdman considering he has more State titles to start with. And it would not even be surprising to me to see neither of them win. Stranger things have happened young Jedi. And finally, if you are so sure of your predictions, I will gladly wager a C note on the field. You can enrich yourself from your unequaled knowledge and insight...... By the way, I will refer to you henceforth by the last syllable of your pen name: BOY
  18. Kind of a stretch calling Erdman a lock when he is not even ranked #1 in his weight class isn't it? that is one of several weights that is going to be a free for all between the top 4-5 wrestlers anyone of which could have a good/bad tourney. And don't forget about the draw coming into play.

I love it! cannot fix that which is broken. So I would like to Know what is the percentage of Union County winning the small school division against the rest of the field. 95%-98%? has any other small school won this event since breaking into sub groups? I think, that as long as the playing field is so unbalanced there will continue to be many schools who wish to opt out of this. Just because of a schools size has nothing to do with the team that school fields. I saw a movie about a small school in Indiana that overcame the challenge of school size to win what everyone said was out of their reach. Everyone knows Union can compete in the big boys club. Don't you think they would want the extra challenge? I do not think that forcing teams into a event they cannot win will grow the sport. Instead... place a big carrot on top of the hill hanging from a tree branch. and let the teams that think they have a shot at the prize jump in. and challenge the rest of the schools to get their #s up so they can play too! There will always be the dynasty's Union, Woodford, X, Trinity, Campbell, Fern and others who will be plying for the title. But every so often when the stars align a underdog team will appear from nowhere and have the makings to do things that people will tell stories about for years, and possibly another movie too. I'm done rattling on about this topic. Good luck to all.

I agree, this would not be a feasible solution. O.K. we will need to attack the issue from another angle. I propose, eliminate the Big/Small school format altogether. We don't water down our state champions by having 3-4 divisions and 3-4 state champs in each weight class. or 3 different school titles. So why do it for a Duels title? Also, let's eliminate Goo's annoyance as well Before the beginning of the year, any team who wishes to compete for the title, submits a entry. Sectionals to be held on the second weekend of January (for example). if a school with a low # of wrestlers wishes to enter or not FINE , no penalty for the next year if their numbers increase. Let the coaches decide what is best for their team. Now some teams may enter without the hope of winning, but get a couple of matches in for their wrestlers. or they may be able to do better elsewhere. And as a added benefit to us fans we don't have to try and decide which duel championship to attend. all the best teams will be at one location.

I have been giving this subject some thought. and have some ideas that may help some of the problems ( such as teams backing out) If team A has a full team and team B only has 6 wrestlers why would team A wrestle anyone? they could win the match and keep their wrestlers rested. Since team B has no chance, why would they wish to compete in this format? Therefore: change big school/ little school to mean number of competitors. Big school 9-14 wrestlers , small school 1-8. NEXT: have all sectionals take place on the same weekend. this is imperative for if everyone is committed to that one weekend then that becomes the only game in town. If your not going to wrestling in your sectionals you will have to leave the state to wrestle because everyone else is going to be there.
