It is a shame these two didn't get to wrestle in the state finals this year because of the random draw. They were by far the top two kids at 182 and these rankings are proving it. Good Job!

Lets get the wrestling talk started back up with a week until state. Huge second round matches in some weight classes. At 138 majority of the 2nd round matches are between top kids. Any matches your looking forward to watching?

State results from the past few years. 2011 St.X 5, FC 35, Moore 39 2012 St.X 7, FC 59, Moore 18 2013 St.X 1, FC 20, Moore 11 2014 St.X 4, FC 8, Moore 19 As I stated in an earlier post it surprises me that these two teams would defeat St.X. If you look at the state results St.X is always in the top 10, Fern Creek once and Moore never. I meant nothing negative by my post just my thoughts on the matter. Good luck to everyone.

Are you sure St.X brings there A team each year? In years past they have lost to teams like Fern Creek and Moore, that seems odd to me if all their hammers were there since year in and year out they produce better results than those two teams.

I thought the teams were as expected for being early in the season. I mainly focused on Woodford but Woodford in my eyes had the most solid team with a ton of talent in the lighter weights to go along with their bigger studs like Andreoni who looked bigger and stronger than last year. Oldman has a large roster and looked solid all around. Moore had the most inexperienced team and might struggle this year but also had probably the two best wrestlers there in Potyner and Smith. Overall good morning of wrestling.

Usually some good teams there this Saturday. I know it's only a scrimmage but any good match ups to look forward to? Can someone post all the teams.

Over the summer I got the feeling that people believe that Frankrone is a sure thing to repeat at 182 because he won the title last year. Tyler had a great end of season and got hot at the right time and won when it matters. But don't forget that he had a losing record last season to Smith (1-2) and also lost to Leaton. 182 will once again come down to who has the best state tournament regardless who is the defending champ. I hope Tyler is at 182 to make it exciting just like last year. Also, Miozza and Meiman would be best to stay at 170. 170 was a very weak weight class last season and 182 will be much tougher than what they experienced last year.

I loved watching boys these guys last year win titles. I think Sheffer is better than Hurst by 5-10 points. Sheffer has much better technique. I also think if any of the returning high placers at 120, Erdman 2nd, Potyner 3rd, Miller 4th make it back down they will be favorites over Hurst. Add these placers plus Sheffer good weight to watch.

Anyone care to take a shot at some of the early favorites in each weight class or some of the best match ups coming up this season.

Binder is huge step below Erdman. I believe they wrestled at Ryle last year and it wasn't even close. If Erdman is at 132 he will be tough to beat. I see him more as a 126 tho. Good lucks guys

I think what I am trying to say is that there are some kids coming from smaller programs that have the same drive as the top kids in the state but due to lack of resources don't get the same experience and opportunities as the top kids. For example, funding for hotels and travel to bigger tournaments is something the wrestler can't control. He is forced to wrestle the schedule his school approves. Why are all the top teams at the bigger tournaments like Ryle, and Dragon? Then look at the out of state tournaments in Cincinnati and Dayton only a few KY schools attend. Why? Because they can afford to travel and attend. Some of the smaller programs ask to attend these tournaments but their A.D. or principal doesn't approve the event due to lack of funds. Just look at the state tournaments and see which schools show up in nice buses with team coolers then which ones pile into cars with a few parents with no team supplies. You wanna tell me Union County having the funds to bus all those fans to the arena doesn't motivate their wrestlers? This is life, some families got it...some don't, but to say its not an advantage is crazy. To agree with bulldog success is judged differently with each program and individual. Some wrestlers may reach their goals and overcome these obstacles but may not be standing on the podium in late February. The climb to the top is much harder if you don't have parent support and resources. Especially in the sport like wrestling where the more rooms your in wrestling different people the sharper your skills get. Tyr, you have been on this forum for years bragging about how you trained and pushed your kids every step of the way. I applauded your efforts and you have done a tremendous job with your boys but don't you think you have been their strongest asset? They have had constant support and motivation from you on their way to top. With that support comes rides, money, training help, an understanding of weight cutting, etc. That knowledge can't be substituted regardless how determined one is. Can that knowledge be made up in different ways through hard work, yes it can. But that requires additional time and money resources many of these kids don't have.

I understand that coming from a poor home life doesn't mean you can't succeed and win but it makes the task 10x harder. That is the point I am trying to make. Many people on this forum stress the importance of showing up at big events like Super 32 and Fargo but that's easier said than done. Having to fundraise every time you want to attend something can be mentally and physically exhausting for a teenager. Tyr, your sons have had great success but how many camps, clubs, tournaments have they attended over the years? They also have the advantage of having you as a father. A father who cares as much as you and shows them constant support is an awesome tool to have. Would your boys be as great without you or all the additional camps and clubs? Maybe... Maybe not? You should be very proud of them and their accomplishments. Being 14-18 years old and working after school to help support the family, pay rent, and buy food takes away from a lot of training time. Than the driving factor can also hurt progression. Finding a ride to and from isn't always easy. I know teams who take city buses together but the routes only go so far.

I have to agree with you that Kentucky is an odd state when it comes to ranking people based on records and accomplishments. This is a tough job and I give anyone who tries credit. I think the reason it's difficult is the diversity in the schedules of teams in this state. There are only a handful of teams that make an effort to travel and find tougher competition. I understand that it's easier for regions on the borders like Northern KY to attend bigger tournaments simply due to location. Teams in cities such as Louisville and Lexington have to drive longer which means more funds and time. I have noticed over the years the bigger private schools such as St. X, Trinity have been working to toughen up their schedule. Within the last couple years more public schools such as Moore, Walton Verona and Ryle have made an effort to challenge themselves by attending multiple Ohio and Indiana tournaments. It's no secret that the teams making this effort are showing the most growth in the state. Teams with tougher schedules often bring kids into the state tournament with double digit losses while another wrestler may by 42-3 but hasn't wrestled nearly anyone tough. That's why rankings are tough to do. Also, many students that attend these bigger schools have the parietal support and $ to travel to camps and off season tournaments such as Fargo. That support goes along way when it comes to improving in the off season. Each year the cost goes up which hinders the development of less privileged kids.

I think the arena has both positive and negative aspects. I like the space and the arena itself is nice but its dirty. I don't understand why they don't sell brackets nor did I understand why they wouldn't let teams warm up on the mats before the tournament started. The wrestling in KY is getting better but the reffing needs to improve in order to keep up with the scrambles and better technique. The refs are very inconsistent on stalling and takedown calls and it has an impact on close matches. I saw some great wrestling and very exciting matches in each round including many overtime and 1 point matches. The finals were disappointing in my eyes. Too many of the finals were not close matches and dominated by one wrestler. The close matches were exciting but didn't demonstrate great technique or skills, just two evenly matched wrestlers going at it. Overall great weekend of wrestling. Congrats to all that stood on the podium.

Beeler is good but I think he is a step behind people like Blackwell, Carr, and Austin. I think Union and Woodford have tougher schedules than Meade and that makes a difference at the state tournament. If he proves me wrong than good for him. Good luck guys!

113 will be a battle between the following wrestlers, I believe all of them have placed in state in the past. There are many other good/solid wrestlers in this weight class as well but in my eyes two of these 5 wrestlers will be battling it out in the finals. The draw of this weight class will be important and could make some interesting match ups. Bender, St.X Vega, Fern Creek Hernandez, Henry Clay Sheffer, Union Hall, Moore

As a fan, great day of wrestling...exciting, organized, and nice arena. Here is some of what I saw yesterday. Feel free to agree or disagree with my comments. Big School: Campbell continues to struggle a little this year but their big point scorers will have them in the mix at the state tournament. Trinity is a great team so no shame in losing to them first round. Campbell is one of the best programs in the state but you can't be unbeatable every year. Their studs like Myers and Fausz are fun to watch and have brought Kentucky Wrestling to a new level. X and Trinity semifinal was amazing to watch. The dual was full of good wrestling and excitement...true rivals getting after it. Some of those match ups have happened multiple times which makes wrestling each other that much more difficult. X always has their kids wrestling well at the end of year and it seems as if they are getting ready for another title run. Great on their feet, powerful takedowns. Henry Clay will also score good points at state. The match between 113 Hernandez and Vega was surprising to me. A returning state champ should not get teched, great match by Hernandez. If their studs take care of business who knows where they could finish. Fern Creek did well for coming on short notice. They won some big matches and that program looks much better than the past couple years, good for them and I hope they continue to great better each year. Small School Union like always looked impressive. Their handfighting and angles are better than any other team in the gym yesterday. They wrestle each match with power and look to score as many points as possible. I would love to see their lightweights practice against each other, great group of wrestlers who are all respectful kids. After their efforts yesterday I would say Union is the favorite in 3 weeks. If they can get points from some of the second tier kids they have the ability to build a little lead, may come down to the draws. Good luck to them. Love the singlets as well. Moore for my money was the second best small school team. From the 5th seed they took third and pushed Union the most. Their lightweights are also tough having great matches with Union. Not many schools can say that against Union, those rematches will be entertaining. 182 will be in the mix for the title in a very tough weight in 3 weeks. Moore is a program that over the last couple years has really improved and is now a team to be feared. Good for them, Louisville, and Kentucky. A lot of talk about Scott this year on here. Looked to me as if they were missing a wrestler or two but they are still a couple years away from being one of the top teams in that area. They seem to be on the right track to improving as a program. Glad the two champs wrestled each other, as a fan that was exciting to see. Overall, I was impressed with Louisville area teams X, Trinity, Moore, and Fern Creek all look to be solid teams. Should be a fun and exiting end to the season Kentucky wrestling has come along way and when you put the best teams in one gym I am reminded how much better the wrestling has gotten. Thanks to all who put the tournament together and ran it so well.
