  1. So your saying a young 5th or 6th grader from a region with small participation numbers, makes the top 4 in their region and just qualifies, now is disqualified from the youth tournament that he actually is more prepared for.

    OR

A youth that puts in the extra work to become a solid wrestler, now is disqualified from competing at the youth state because the just qualified for a MS State.

    OR

A solid elite wrestler that wants to compete Nationally and wants to wrestle in the Elementary State Tournament BUT because Tulsa Nationals is the same weekend  as the manadatory Regional tournament that he has to weigh in for, but doesn’t even need to compete in to qualify for the State Tourney, cannot compete in his state tournament

All because some coach Dad thinks that by eliminating good kids from the elementary State tournament is a good idea!??

Nike Man, please explain how these scenerios are great for our sport, these kids or making our competition better?

Merry Christmas everyone!  Dutch and I worked late into the night on Thursday to get these done, but with the Gladiator and Christian Co going on over the last few days there are a lot of updates coming in the next week or so.  Hopefully a lot of coaches get their results up to date over the break.  We will begin adjusting weights if kids are not competing at the weight we expect them to be.  I really dislike bouncing kids back and forth when they drop, so many kids who are eligible for a lower class have been left there unless we had better information.  Anyway, in the next couple weeks we will be making those adjustments.

Again, happy holidays to everyone.  Thanks to everyone who has sent us email and private messages keeping us in the know on results and weights or other changes.

Thank you Ranger and Dutch for the time and energy you guys put into this. I know it’s a thankless job, but is something that everyone looks forward to seeing and I know that we appreciate you guys. Merry Christmas to the Moore and Cornett/Smith families!

I liked how Montgomery county did the FINALS! It was a little crowded! The arena after Montgomery was TERRIBLE! Couldn't see JACK for parents walking in front of the matches! I like Louisvlle and all the mats and ability to actually see! We should ALL work together to make Tournaments or Duals that will make every program some money! We need to KNOW in advance before a VOTE is made! I understand your point now FED UP! The COST is what I don't like! Hotels are NOT cheap! It's NOT cheap to park! To eat! Ect ect! Not EVERY good wrestler has it made at home! Maybe work in some scholarships for wrestling families that need help to attended state? Maybe get a hotel to give a couple rooms out for FREE! Since we do fill them up?

I agree the venue the year after Montgomery was set up bad. Broadbent is designed much nicer for our 2 venues and we were able to create a nice face off for the State Championships for MS. I also agree that the food cost and parking isn’t cheap, or good!!! The parking can’t be changed but hopefully the food, or lack there of it, can be. Hotels around Louisville ranges from $40 to $400 and we’re easily obtained unlike Montgomery when the 2 nice ones off the exit were full, you were down the highway. I have nothing but praise for the Montgomery County State. They did a top rate job with what they have. But to have both States back to back, this venue is the best so far. As far as scholarships, I think that should be done on a club level and from an organization level with total privacy. I know that it does happen but for the respect of the families, you won’t know who they are.

  5. Central location is the most important benefit to having it in Louisville. Having the ability to have the youth tournament the day after the middle school is the second biggest benefit to having it at this venue. We use to piggy back youth to the high school tournament until the snow/ice event caused the state tourney date to be changed. When that happened, the youth tournament also had to change because the KHSAA decided it wanted to reserve the Sunday of HS state for potential weather issues and to allow HS state to be completed that same weekend. So we all came together and decided to piggyback youth state on MS state. Moving mats, set up, volunteers and everything that goes along with both MS and Youth State benefit from being the same location and on one weekend. Also we seen a huge increase in viewing of MS by youth that came down on Saturday and watched MS. Just like they did when they followed HS. As for the money, every club is able to work tables and other opportunities to make money for their club and to help it run smoother. I can tell you, most parents want to watch their kid during their session and then get award and leave. I’ve ran/worked both youth and MS tournament for 9 years now and can’t tell you how many years it was impossible to get the 20 tables covered for youth or help loading or unloading gear. I can tell you that the River City program kicks ass when it comes to set up and tear down. I’m there Friday morning and don’t leave til late Sunday night and their parents are there in full force. The only thing that needs to get better is the food selection, quantity and price. Also they should have a hospality room for the MS state and HS state. Most can’t leave the mat all day, it makes it nice to run back and grab a sandwich with the 10 minutes you can squeeze in. As for parking, it’s expensive but a nature of the beast for the location. Hotels and restaurants everywhere for families to enjoy the whole weekend. Montgomery County were class acts and held a great tournament, but as we grow the venue and times have to change. Just my 2 cents. Great to see this forum being used. Some great points being brought up. Best of luck to all your wrestlers this year!! May they hit the podium!!

With Cole Thomas wrestling 106 for Ryle why is he still ranked at 92.  If he is going to wrestle at MS state looks like he is more than likely going to be at 98 or 105.

Cole walks around at 97 lbs and 4 foot nothing. He wanted to wrestle 106 for Ryle and his brothers. It’s a great opportunity for him to grow through this sport and fill a spot for them.

I just saw Isaac Thorton lose a match to Super 32 Champion 6-4 and should have had a takedown that was called out of bounds.

Byrant Bean, Spencer Moore, Cole Thomas,  Tanner Spaulding, and all the Messerly’s looked really good against some of the best kids from Ohio.

I wish they would have been able to bring full squads. Walton Verona finished 4th and Ryle finished 5th. This is extremely impressive since Ohio follows the 5 match rule and most KY kids didn’t get favorable duals. Lose first match best you can do is 7th.  Only teams to finish higher two were clubs and the other was Graham who got 3rd.

It was a great tournament for sure. Carter Messerly had the worst draw of the day!! He drew some kid from Legacy Christian that was the MOW of tournament, I think the hammers name was... Gavin Brown!! I think Carter takes runner up or 3rd if he wasn’t realigned in bracket and had to endure this guy!

We have enough “wrestling dads” who’ve gone off the deep end in this state. I say it’s a mistake to put 9 year old 4th graders on a middle school team. I think it’s unwise to put a 7th grader on a varsity team regardless of skill level.

I coached middle school and youth here in Ky for 5 years and have coached and reffed in other states too. I don’t say it lightly but dads ranking kids (including their own) at this level is unwise. I was a decent DI wrestler but that doesn’t make my opinion any more or less important.

Our sport is dying in part because kids don’t stick with it. I think it’s partly due to rankings like this. My kid wasn’t much of a wrestler but he just scored a 36 ACT. I’ll take that over a middle school #1 ranking any day.

    Tim Reynolds

Congratulations to your son getting a 36 on his ACT!! Mine’s a straight A student and was ranked as a 4th grader at one time too. He loved it as much as the report card. The reason why is because he’s a, KID!!! You might want to tell Mark Hall, Zeke Escalara, David Carr, Nathan Boston that being a 7th grade state champ in HS was “unwise”. And yes I’m forgetting some but these are the most recent examples that it does benefit kids and helps them along the way to have a successful life. Not just in wrestling but school and most importantly LIFE. I know each one of the kids personally and can tell you they are top notch young men. Now with your thought process, we should limit their success because it doesn’t fit your thought process. If you truly are a wrestler and fan of the sport, promote and embrace it, don’t tear it down.

You’re seriously ranking 9 year olds!?  Come on man.

The fact that there are parents willing to put time and effort into promoting Kentucky Wrestling says a lot about Chris. What are you doing to better this sport, influence the life of these wrestlers in a positive direction, promote the youth of our State? Regardless of age, if a kid can compete and beat MS wrestlers at any age deserves props!! Thanks to all the adults that impact our future generation in a positive way.

USA Wrestling does only require a 15 minute break between matches. So this is left to the discretion of the tournament director. But all post season tournaments will be run according to the rules that were established by the committee. This is the same as it has always been.

Thank you Jon. That's what I thought. But when WRESTLE REF decided to dispute the recovery time, I figured it best to just leave it alone. I've been to the meetings and I also read the USA's rule book in regards to this. I knew it was a descretionary call just like it was to allow the one lone wrestler from Tennessee to weigh in after weigh ins were closed. (Which was the right call due to an honest error). My point I was trying to make is that this tournament could be finished much earlier and still have all the great competition/ support from the parents and teams. Great program trying to run a great tournament. Just some honest feedback from an appreciative coach.

Thanks for giving the girls props and posting it on the forum!!  We need more information about how our Kentucky wrestlers are doing around the state and around the United States

  12. Congratulations to John Hardin for surviving another competitive tournament.

Some great young talent at this tournament Saturday. Was good to see the Kentucky wrestlers back on the mat. Coach Griffith did a good job working through the Track Wrestling glitch in the morning and it seemed to work the rest of the day. The hospitality room was delicious and the young lady with the 3 kids running it was tougher than the UFC fight Saturday night!! One on the hip, a baby strapped to the front and one that was helping her out.  The officiating did a great job, even with the new rule in place that confuses everyone(your toes are no longer a support member of your body). They seemed to call this consistant all day.  And their needs to be a rule to penalize teams that continue to coach from 2 sides of the mats, this is getting old!!

Things that can help our sport and get more to return to this tournament: Can you find a way to reduce the long breaks. 3 open mats to try and align every bracket seemed like it created a lot of wait time for the fans/ parents. Also the announcer/JH coach said, to a group of us coaches standing around waiting, that it's mandatory to allow the wrestlers a 1/2 hour between matches. This is furtherst from the truth and it seemed their was enough matches to avoid this when only one round of consi's and 2 rounds of championship rounds were wrestled before the hour break. It's your privately held tournament. You can run it within a reasonable timeframe to allow the wrestlers rest but also moving it along. Then some Kids waiting 3 hours to wrestle their 1st match. Just seemed unbalanced. I believe this tournament could have wrapped up by 2 pm even with the track set back. I think everyone in that gym would have been extremely thankful to get in a great day of competition and been home by dinner time. Just my 2 cents worth.

  13. We travel to them all the time during off season. I think it's a great idea if it benefits wrestling in Kentucky. The late spring and summer tournaments are awesome in Michigan Ohio, Tennessee and Penn. You can obviously see the benefits to it. I will say that USA wrestling has been great so far for the promotion of our wrestlers from youth thru HS in Kentucky. However the tournaments seem to be targeted toward the Midwest. The great thing about the "way" programs  are right in our Region. I'd say as long as the focus is not to compete against the KSWA, USA wrestling's involvement with Kentucky wrestling or the program that's in place now, that it would be a welcomed addition. Just my 2 cents worth. Have you touched base with Darryl in Tennessee, Rob in Michigan or Randy in Ohio. They are directors for each respective state. Great guys with awesome tournaments!

  15. Very Proud of the effort these young men made in Danville this weekend. Although we went 2-5 on the weekend and finished 10th, these wrestlers never quit and recognized the work that needs to be put in to compete nationally. With one state champ willing to go, we were able to build a team out of state placers that showed they weren't scared to go up against loaded club teams with 6 kids deep in each weight class. Congratulations to Tom Katchen-Carter and Brandon Richmond for going 6-1 on the weekend and earning All-American status!! Thank you to Coach Vlach, Coach Kinley and Coach Goss for coaching with me. Thank you to Coach Jon Carr for helping get the gear together at last minute and to Carr Wrestling Academy for hosting 2 camps for us. I'm looking forward to taking a group back next year to compete for a top 5

  16. I wanted to thank Coach Joe Carr Sr and Joe Carr Jr for opening their facility Sunday and holding a camp for Team Kentucky Middle School. As always with these 2, great knowledge and passion for growing the sport through each wrestler. Also wanted to thank Coach Jon Carr for his continued assistance with Kentucky USA wrestling and all the info to make sure we are ready for Danville in a couple weeks!
