Not recognizing wrestlers who have earned the award because they didn’t qualify for state isn’t positive. If it’s such an important award (which it is), why limit the recognition to just state qualifiers.
-
I hate the idea of excluding the non state qualifiers from receiving recognition for Academic Allstate.
-
There is an academic all state award. Honorable mention is for students who maintian a 3.25 or better, and First Team All State is given for a GPS of over 3.75. https://khsaa.org/academic-all-state-honoree-listing-announced/

My kid was a little guy who wrestled at 113 as and 8th grader, 195 as a Junior/senior, and as a heavy in college. So he got to experience both sides of the coin. Unfortunately, big guys nowadays tend to lean towards football and stay away from wrestling. I see fewer big kids wrestling at youth and middle school than even what we saw 5 or 6 years ago, and there's almost zero depth at all at the high school level above 195. You can always find a young kid to fill 106 in the lineup. Not so much at 220.
-
First, I don't want to see any weight classes eliminated. IF a class was to be cut, 220 would make more sense than 106. Year after year, 220 and Heavy aren't terribly deep, and combining them in my opinion would impact less wrestlers, AND align better with the college level. Reed and Myers wouldn't have been impacted much if at all had they been forced to bump up to Heavy in HS and likely would have faced better competition, and been better prepared for college. And really, Reed and Myers are the exception. Eliminating 106 would impact far more high level wrestlers than eliminating 220. But as I said, I don't want to see any classes eliminated.

Taking opportunities from the kids that can make 106 would have a big ripple effect on 113 and 120 kids which ultimately would affect some juniors and seniors. This would hurt the overall growth and quality of the sport, as many of these little kids turn into bigger kids. I'm not really a fan of cutting any weights, but if you had to cut a weight, 220 would make a lot more sense than cutting 106. Pound for Pound, 106 is always more competitive at a high level than 220. Who cares if it's 7th 8th and 9th graders.

No 2lb allowance. The weigh in from MS the day before will be used, and they will be placed in whatever weight class that puts them in for the youth tourney. The youth weight classes are scratch weight, with no allowance. Again, the weight classes are different, so you're really comparing apples and oranges. The weight class they wrestle in MS will be different than what they wrestle in youth, and the allowance is strictly a HS/MS thing.

The weight classes are different in youth and middle school. None of the youth events I'm aware of have any allowances, so really the two pound allowance in middle school has no impact on youth.

Still looking for a few teams for December 7th. Flyer attached. Woodland Wildcat Classic 2019.docx

An even worse thing would be to not have youth/ms state at all.

Agreed. In order to continue to grow the sport, it’s important to hear the opinions from the non coaches/parents/fans. Doesn’t mean you have to do everything that group wants, but it’s certainly important to know what they are thinking, especially if there are issues that the board doesn’t know about. How can you look out for the best interests of your constituents if you don’t know how they feel?
-
Didn't realize things had changed. I guess the last time I really paid attention was 2016 (the year before the tourney moved to Broadbent), when one of the kids I coached made the finals, and I know for a fact that he did get a singlet (he wore it in the finals match). Back then, large medals, bracket boards, and singlets were standard practice. I can't really speak for the last 3 years.
-
I haven't been in a couple of years, but in the 6 or 7 years I attended (2011-2017) the medals were always nice (much nicer than high school in fact), finalists got singlets, and winners got brackets. Is that no longer the case?

I’m not sure I understand the reluctance (or refusal) to post that information here. There are likely more than a few coaches who have no idea about the coaches group, how to join, etc. as a former coach looking in from the outside, it feels like everything is now less transparent and secretive. Even the new site doesn’t directly state where the State Tourney is...you have to click on a link to find out the location. Why not just post it? Again, it feels secretive, and almost like this whole process wants to be kept quiet. Like it or not, this is still the place where most come to get their information. Not using this site as a communication vehicle is wasting a resource to communicate and release information and is driving a wedge between the Board and the general wrestling community.

You can bet Johnson Central will have a bunch.
-
Sounds good in theory. But it's simply not practical, or possible without doing damage to the sport.
-
Unfortunately, almost every sport EXCEPT football and basketball is in the same boat as wrestling. And there are some sports that have it even worse than wrestling.
-
With Trackwrestling, there is no need to get a media company involved at all. They are already paying to use track to run the tourney. All they need is to buy a dozen video cams (you need backups) to attach to the scoring computers and the infrastructure is done. Sell subscriptions to the event, get a few sponsors involved and they are guaranteed to make money off streaming the event. I know I've heard the wifi at the Horsepark isn't cheap, but even with that cost, I don't see how the KHSAA can't make steaming the event a positive revenue generator.

Any attempt at seeding is better than a completely random draw. I agree, no system will be perfect, and there will always be kids who outwrestle (or under perform) their seeds. But the current random draw ALWAYS leads to more than a few hammers meeting before the semi's. You don't have to seed 1-32. I'd be more than happy just seeding the region winners and every else following in from there based on region placement. Not seeding simply because it won't be perfect, is not a good reason to not even try. Every major national tournament manages to seed wrestlers somewhat logically. No reason the State of Kentucky can't.
-
The whole football playoffs are NOT going to be seeded. The seeding will not occur until after the second round of the playoffs is completed. Then in round 3, the teams will be seeded based on an RPI type formula.

Hopefully more KY kids will consider Bellarmine. Last year there were only 2 KY kids on the roster. -

That's correct. Open enrollment has no bearing on athletic eligibility. Unless you meet one of the exceptions, if you've played a varsity sport and transfer, you'll have to sit out, even with open enrollment. -

In short, it doesn't matter what you do as a middle schooler. There are no transfer restrictions for incoming freshman. Transfer restrictions don't come into play until you've participated in a varsity sport as a high schooler. -
Just heard that they will be wrestling as an independent, at least initially, and have been assured the program will not be cut.
