Bodyweight Training for Wrestlers with Scott Goodpaster

I am certain you know more than most when it comes to strength/conditioning/weight training. A lot more than I do to be certain. Sorry, not a Moeller guy like you so desperately want to make me out to be. As I said earlier, I am hours away from there in NE Ohio. A short drive to Walsh Jesuit. As for CC getting bumped from SWOWCA... Perhaps other schools improved as well? Perhaps CC was not first on the list? You got proof to back up your conspiracy? Heck, SWOWCA is about the fifth toughest tournament in Ohio. Behind Top Gun, GMVWCA, Brecksville, and Ironman. Your good friends at Moeller have put together a nice early season duals event. I am still waiting to see the list of wrestlers your boys beat within the past two years. Kids grow, Jr high counts for nothing this many years removed. Indeed, Stephen proved his mettle his freshman year. Since then? He did roll everybody while at Reading in the small school division. Not his fault that he did not have much competition though. Same can be said for last year. Austin, not tested. He is good. How good? Hard to tell as I don't recognize anybody he beat. I am sure he is up for the challenge. I understand the expense involved with Fargo, but it would be nice to see how he stacks up, especially when he reaches the Juniors, as Cadet can be a bit watered down at some weights. As for college......I enjoyed watching Ruschell get after it. I am not some NE Ohio honk. I know better. When the region gets better, we all get better. I want to see guys from Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio do us proud. So don't go out trying to make me into your mythical arch enemy. You've got enough of those. By the way, early bird registration knocks $30 off. That's $100 for an eight hour session. Not bad. I paid waaaaaaay more than that at the last financial seminar I attended. Worth every penny, and some!

Bodyweight Training for Wrestlers with Scott Goodpaster

Yawn. To the rest on this site: Goodpaster is well respected throughout the wrestling community. Never is a bad word spoken about the man. He has a proven track record of success and is committed to each client. When I heard the hype about his program I checked it out. Why one man feels the need to talk in such a derogatory manner towards a man of such positive character is beyond me. This behavior reeks of jealousy and scorn. If it is too expensive for you, don't go. No need to carry on like a child.

Slow down fella, and think this through. True or false? The best seek the best. Oh, what the heck. Stop thinking so hard. I will give you the answer:TRUE. So no. I did not back up one word of what you said. The best seek the best and these men sought out Goodpaster. FACT. If as you say, you have so much expertise in this area of training and marketing (you know not what I do, by the way) then why are you not as successful as Goodpaster? Put your money where your mouth is and open a gym. You have the training knowledge, that cannot be disputed. Do you have the ability to run a business successfully? Do you have the guts to become a small business owner?

Bodyweight Training for Wrestlers with Scott Goodpaster

Son, I have first hand knowledge of his training methods paying huuuuuuuge dividends for a handful of wrestlers that never stepped on a mat before entering high school. True enough, he is not a wrestling coach. The fact that he has been sought out by some of the best (Taylor went to him, and traveled to Cincinnati 3x wk while in high school) says tons about his program. Jerome Robinson is another. He sought out Goodpaster and traveled from Cleveland to do so. Goodpaster's program is in use at a number of high schools in southwest Ohio, including Moeller. Mt St Joe uses it as well. Yes, it is expensive. Yes, it works. He shows up at Ironman. I understand he shows up at a few meets in the Cincinnati area as well. And.....he does this without toting around business flyers/cards, etc. He calls his wrestlers in the evening to check on them. The guy is not dirty as you want folks to believe. He never claims to have made Taylor or any other wrestler for that matter. I just checked his web site, lo and behold Taylor is not listed under the testimonials section. He does claim, and accurately, to develop core strength without gaining weight. Names like Harger (Northwestern), Corrill (UNC), Ian Korb (Penn), Touris (OSU), Cameron (IU), and Weinkam (OU) are a few others that used his system. He is successful and has earned the right to charge for his highly effective program. A BMW costs more than a Chevy for a reason. Capiche? So, why the sour grapes? Why attack the guy?

Excellent program. David Taylor used this program extensively while in high school and still works out with Scott on occasion. Many other notable wrestlers whose names escape me at the moment have used this program with great success.

    Olympic Wrestling

Disappointed in the lack of coverage so far. I was hoping for more, what with the fact that the Olympics are a collection of fringe sports. However, after watching the Greco coverage I can see why it was not given more attention. Boring! I have been to better (as in action/entertaining) state qualifier meets than what I witnessed on TV. Looking forward to freestyle now. Hope it brings more action.

I watched a number of freestyle matches on either CNBC or MSNBC. Saw most of Varner's matches. As an aside.........The wife was watching the closing ceremonies and shouted "George Michael looks like Chuck Liddell." I hated to admit the resemblance (sorry Chuck).

Great to see Burroughs get one. You are right, the freestyle action was not boring at all. Guys were really getting after it. Jake Varner, tough as nails. God to see Cael in the corner.

Mpire, not sure why the personal attacks. Whatever. Sorry I brought up Ohio. Not trying to be a snob. True, finals matches at many levels sometimes are not the most exciting. There is so much on the line and one slip up against an elite wrestler can end your day quickly. International Greco rules do not promote action. The rules have gone so far as to take away the "passivity" call (similar to stalling) in lieu of the push out rule. These elite guys are not going to get tossed by their opponent, and a push out at this level is difficult as well. With no fear of a stall warning (passivity) these guys lean on each other for 1:30 and rely on par terre to determine the outcome. I appreciate the athleticism of the wrestlers. I do believe a rules change or two are in order to reward the offensive wrestler. Did you guys catch any judo? Tons of action. Grappler, you seem to have gotten the gist of what I was saying. My hope was that some action packed wrestling might just garner some participation. I doubt that many young'uns found any inspiration in the matches. I am not alone in my sentiments, probably not in the minority either. I still love wrestling as much today as I did yesterday. I am just a bit disappointed in the strategy displayed. Mpire, not trying to bring up the state up north again. Just providing links so that others can have a look at what is being said. This is coming from a state with a few guys that made the national team.http://forum.ohiowrestlingsite.com/showthread.php?12719-Olympic-Discussion-Thread http://www.yappi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=241426 It's not about being "right" or "wrong" as one wants to make it out to be. It is my opinion that seems to be shared by a number of others. If, Mr Mpire, you wish to make this into a "right" or "wrong" situation. Then please refer me to an educated article/chat board/etc that feels Greco was action packed excitement. By the way, I like Greco!

    Olympic Wrestling

I've been around the sport longer than you have, Mpire. All in Ohio mind you. Have traveled cross country, been to the Big 10s, MAC, Southern Scuffle, etc. As well as most of the big high school tournaments. I know what I am watching. True enough, Raider, *some* of the lighter weight Greco matches had a bit of action. Though *most* consisted of neutral position stallfests and :30 seconds of offense v defense par terre. As far as doing the sport any favors.....I would expect this site would be extremely biased toward the sport and that the opinions of one older man would have no effect. I did not realize I carried such weight. Thank you for the edification. As an aside. Will the boys be able to participate at Ironman? Would love to see how they stack up. Haven't seen Stephen wrestle in a few yrs.

A fair amount of coverage was/is available via nbcolympics.com. I had hoped for more "mainstream" coverage to boost interest. After watching the Greco snoozefest on the computer I am glad it did not get much coverage. Even wrestling nuts found it boring. What we saw was 1:30 of hand fighting/pushing/stalling. Scoreless until the final :30 seconds of par terre. Which usually resulted in one gut wrench. The sport did itself no favors.

    State Duals

As cmccoy said, this was put in place by the coaches. Sure it is not to everybody's liking but it is a start. This could turn into a premier event as the kinks are worked out. Splitting the event into two divisions is a good idea.

    IRONMAN

All, I was just notified that Ironman is filling up quicker than usual. As of now there are limited openings. If you are considering this tournament it is imperative that you get after it soon. Get with your coach (Ironman officials require coach's consent) and get your credentials together for Ironman officials to look at, no video. Fair warning, no excuses. Get after it!

    IRONMAN

True, Powerade is a good tournament. Ranks up there with the better ones. IMO, it is tougher than Beast of the East and much better organized.

    IRONMAN

Well, they don't let just anybody in. Also, if you decline an invite then you can kiss that opportunity goodbye forever. Priority is given to teams. Many via invite. I don't know that any team is attractive to the powers that be, but there are a handful of wrestlers that could compete. The bar is set real high for individual wrestlers. I see Cooper and Stephen Myers as possibilities.

    Potential match ups

That was a nice match for Austin vs Robinson. Austin took it to Robinson for most of the match. The score wouldn't have been as close had Austin been able to finish a few of his shots. Not a knock on him, Robinson was huuuuuuge and it was his only advantage against Austin. Fleeing call was garbage true enough. Cooper and Stephen would be the match of the year in KY.

    NHSCA Nationals

Assuming each state brings a true A Team, California is definitely top ten. We don't receive much coverage of California here in the midwest. Each year a few California kids turn some heads at Ironman. Their state tournament is a marathon event. However, as I see it, PA is undisputed #1 with NJ and OH following. MI brings it as well. WI and MN are states on the rise. Probably don't quite get the respect they deserve. With the popularity of The Clash (the best duals tourney in the nation) in MN and Cheesehead in WI, these two states are coming on strong. Illinois has a number of strong programs including Glenbard North and Montini Catholic. FLA has Brandon and Oviedo. GA has Collins Hill. I believe KY is definitely on the right track. Ryle and SK wrestle decent out of state competition. CC has a nice team as well. Fahy, Cooper, Yenter, Myers x2, others(?) are all capable of Fargo AA status. Cooper tops the list in my book.

    NHSCA Nationals

May, 106 took 6th in DII. Went 2-3 (losses by pin, major and 11-6 dec) Reese, 120 took 2nd in DIII (weak class, lost in finals 8-2) Globke, 152 took 8th in DI. Went 2-3 (rocked 16-1 and 9-1, 7-4 loss was not that close) Placing in DI is a decent accomplishment. Although The lower divisions are quite weaker as far as depth goes. If each state sent their best line up Ohio would place at least top five, probably three. Pennsylvania is top dog followed by New Jersey with Ohio right with them. For whatever reason, NHSCA is not a priority in Ohio. Many other states share the same sentiment. Certainly we wouldn't see Indiana winning this event if each state sent their best.
  22. crazyotto

Give me a good reason why?

I can speak for OH which is broken into four regions. Each region consists of four sectionals which all participate in. Top four go onto district which is seeded per sectional placement, a 16 man bracket. There are four districts. Top four go to the state tourney, which is seeded via district placement with some exceptions such as separation of previous state champs/high placers. Again, a 16 man bracket. This is a true state tournament with no fish. Seeds are solely based on performance at sectional then district. Rankings do not come into play at all. For example, at districts a sectional 1st place meets a 4th place in the first round and the 2nd meets the 3rd. This same scenario (1 v 4, 2 v 3) plays out at the state tourney. This is a great money maker for the OHSAA. So, no it is not too difficult to seed. The wrestlers do it for you. The only seeding takes place at the sectional level, and here it is not a difficult task at all with very few full brackets. I cannot think of a reason the KHSAA hasn't adopted this or a similar set up. Why are 32 kids going to the state tourney? Certainly half of them don't belong, no offense. In what other sport do we send everybody to the state tourney? Not football or basketball. Making it to state should mean something.

    NHSCA Nationals

I agree as well. Last year OH finished 13th. This year's "edition" totals exactly three state placers (2nd, 6th, 7th) and only four upperclassmen. Not sure why participation isn't better for this. One reason I was given is that the Elyria qualifier is on 4/14. This is generally the best attended USAW qualifier. Still, it does not make sense that a state as rich in talent as OH is does not field a competitive team. Not competitive at all.
