    Fairfield Invite

CC has a great chance of winning this, top three at least. I was hoping Austin would have more competition this week, but alas Bere dropped to 95. I believe Austin would beat him anyway, just wanted to see some challenge for him. Jennings from Centerville is supposed to be decent, but latest state ranking has him #12 in an overall weak field. I think Nye was slotted #6, but Austin already wrecked him if I recall. Fairfield knows how to run a tournament, nice facility too. Masanek seems to be enjoying a renaissance of sorts at Fairfield though this years team is down from last year in my opinion. A couple good HWT in Gutapfel from Harrison and Burton from Lakota East.

I hear you. It is within the rules though, and Dake is a master at it. I have watched the td a few times and still don't see control. My son said that he "possibly" had a merkle in. Give Dake props, he has found a way to neutralize Taylor's offense.

Alton Bros not wrestling, suspended for disciplinary reasons. Word is that Cael made them make weight anyway.

Union wins Mater Dei Holiday Classic

Huge! Mater Dei has a strong tradition and their wrestlers are well coached. To knock them off any time is big, but at their own event makes it even bigger.

What was the overall impression of the venue, the event, etc? Looks like a nice arena with lots of room between mats, I heard announcer chatting up matches. Nice touch. The fact that CC, SK, and Ryle scored so well says volumes about the level of KY wrestling. Imagine if Union had been there...........

Congrats KY wrestlers, you represented well! Nutter Center looks like a nice venue. As for the "controversial" match, well........No controversy. Takedown at edge in 2nd was legit. Even if it was called out of bounds Marinelli had a nice takedown in 3rd. So, still the same decision. A run through of the video shows Stephen with a very sweet slide by in 1st for a td. Nothing else of consequence in the period. 2nd: Marinelli chooses down and is out easily. Outside of the td at the edge we see Marinelli with three other shots and Myers with one. Further, Myers had trouble getting out from bottom (never did). 3rd: Myers down and gets out after 20 seconds or so. Myers continues to attempt slide by as he has all match. Never close to another takedown. Marinelli does very little and is rightfully hit with stalling early in period. Takedown near the end of period by Marinelli, Myers not remotely close to getting out. 6-3, fair and square. CC coaches never disputed the call. Are you going to call them out like you did at Moeller? Myers gracious in defeat, Mpire could learn from his son's example. You sound like an overbearing soccer mom. I recall you saying this tournament is way better than SWOWCA, Still feel that way? I saw too many small schools that watered down the brackets (poor Austin had to settle for thumping fish after fish. Not his fault though, he beat whomever they put in front of him). After looking over the results of this tournament, I would say CC can hang with the better schools in southwest Ohio in a duals format outside of Moeller.

Here is a very abbreviated breakdown from a yappi poster, including some KY boys: Graham has great light weights and will be tested with some great performers in no order: 106: Stickely - Graham, Heidkcamp - Butler, May - Eaton, Spiess - Delta 113: Seipel - Graham, Riley - MV, Kelly - Bellbrook, Brewer - Franklin 120: Plummer - CJ, Kehn - Sheridan 126: Parrott - MV, Moore - Graham, Trigg - WCH, Ott - Eaton, Slonkosdky - Versailles 132: Jordan - Graham, Hinkle - MV, Middleton - Franklin, 138: Bowshier - KR, Henkle - Graham 145: Hamilton - CC, Branham - Miamisburg, Calvert - Sidney, Fahrer - Delta, Deeter - Covington, Stableton - Sheridan 152: Marinelli - Graham, Cooper - SK, Davis - Middletown, Kowal - Princeton, Schramm - Bellbrook, Logan Jones - Walton Verona, Kersey - Miamisburg, Smith - WCH, Staten - MV, Wright - Franklin, Henderson - T/M, Early - Boro 160: Bo - Graham, Stephen Myers - CC, Globke - Middletown, Buchanon - Techumsah, Wooden - Coffman, Van Dyke - WCH, Adkins - Boro 182: Running C-M, Williams - Brookville, Waugh - Sheridan 195: Harris - Urbana, Deringer - Versailles 220: Myers - CC, Shaw WCH, Henderson - Franklin 285 Harmon - Ben Logan As for all the alleged KY bashing going on at yappi......well I must be reading another forum. I see very little of it. True there are a few jabs at Myers, but just as many coming to the defense of Stephen. OH folks would like to see a Stephen/Bo match. Two big names going at it, who wouldn't want to see that? Bo has no competition in this tourney, and Stephen would give him a decent match. The one to watch here is the Graham frosh, Marinelli. He ran the gauntlet at Ironman (unseeded!) and if I read seed criteria correctly, he will enter 52 unseeded! I will be at Medina, not too far from home so no breakdown of GMVWA for me. I do look for Miamisburg to make some noise as sort of a dark horse. Graham is consensus favorite of course. Hamilton at 45 should place top three, he will see resistance from Branham, Calvert, and Fahrer. Parrott looks to get through at 26, though Graham has another tough freshman in Moore. Will Moore be unseeded as well? As stated in earlier post, upperweights are weak. I see nobody to challenge Austin. Even Graham kids are weak at these weights.

Looking for good results from this tourney. Who cares what others are saying (actually I see a lot of respect from those that matter, especially in the team race), it will get settled on the mat. GMVWA is one of the better tournaments in Ohio, on par with SWOWCA. The lighter weights are loaded, upperweights are quite weak. Let's hope the weather holds out.

AWN High School Rankings dec 13

Well, I would say easiest route is at 45 as he would avoid Bo and Marinelli (and Cooper), but don't know when Stephen is eligible to get there. Is Hamilton certified for 40?

As for best match ups.......I really haven't looked over potential match ups. I did look over weight classes and checked out the state "rankings" in each division. 106 has potential to be the most exciting class with Heidkamp, Stickley, Spiess, May, and Warner. The 38, 70, 82, 95, 220, 85 appear weak overall. Fireworks in semis at 45, 52, and 60 (if Stephen is 60). Better question might be where does Stephen go? He has opportunity to solidify his rank at 60, 52, or 45. I look for SK, Ryle, and CC to do well. I will be a bit closer to home at Medina.

Right on. Lots of different rankings. They provide a decent gauge of talent, but mostly provide entertainment. Should be a good tournament, though upperweights on the Ohio side of the river look a little thin on talent overall based on "rankings". SK, CC, Ryle, and WV make this tourney even better. It is a great weekend of wrestling in OH with GMVWA, Brecksville, and Medina all taking place.

I haven't looked over the rankings in total, however I thought Brock's results at Ironman may move him up a slot or two. Next opportunity for some kids will be at GMVWCA. A decent tournament, most weight classes have a stud or two.

  17. When my boys wrestled my work schedule afforded a lot of time off in the winter. I routinely cruised on over to watch practice. I never got in the way, never said a word. It was not my room. I did witness a number of wrestle offs, some of my sons included. I was never asked to leave, and in these instances when my kid was on the mat I steered clear of the area. I have no problem with a parent being in the room as long as he/she is not a distraction. I coached ice hockey for many years. At the beginning of each season I had a mandatory meeting with all the parents. I let them know my door was always open. I asked for input. However, I made it clear that I was the coach. I have a resume of success. I made it clear that if you want to criticize you better be ready to lace 'em up, hit the ice, and lend a hand. If you've never skated or played the game then.......well then you better think things through before cracking on me.
  18. CC would have fared quite well at SWOWCA, never said they wouldn't. Never mentioned the school. I am not from the lower part of the state so I do not know of the politics surrounding this tournament that you refer to. I have made the trip down when it was at Oak Hills as I visited family in the area. My impression was that of a well run event. Perhaps CC can get in next year. The upperweights had some solid brackets. At 195, Austin could have had a shot at Thornberry. Would like to see Austin and Scales as well. Stephen could have won at a few weights. I hear the Heyob kid is pretty good, that could have been a fun one. The bitter/better comeback is a good one. You should trademark that.
  19. Bitterman, party of one. Your table is ready.
  20. Nice work by all the KY teams that took the challenge and competed at SWOWCA. Good to know Cooper is back in form after struggling with an injury at Ironman (or so I heard).

I agree. How 'bout this: Cooper, Ervin, et al went to Ironman without their team. How does this affect team points?

    Raider Rumble observations

BOTH Myers boys would place at Ironman. Stephen placed as a freshman (pretty high placement if I recall) so the smart money is on him placing again. I think it is safe to assume that he knows how to navigate a big bracket (mental prep) and would be a mid placer. Back to this event. Nice recap WrestlingGuru. Sounds like a successful event.

    Ironman

Oh. Well okay then. Many great folkstyle wrestlers blow off Fargo. The talent level at Fargo has dwindled of late. The numbers are there, just not the talent. Look over the names, so many kids that qualify for Fargo don't win state, or even place high at folkstyle state. On the other hand, Ironman has continued to improve. So we can debate potAto or potAHto all you want, it is all good. Hope to see Austin there next year. Possibility?

My understanding is that they went o'fer, but scored better than in the past. Can't say that I followed this event much this time around.
