    5 MATCH RULE

Speaking from experience, if a kid has five good goes in one day he is wiped out. If he is not wiped out, then he has not had five good goes. This includes the required wait time between matches. I agree that kids would be set up for injury if required to wrestle more than five. As for poorly run events, don't return. Or do your best to get educated on the event well ahead of time and opt out if it seems to be poorly run. Sorry to be blunt.
  4. Youth meet. One wrestler obviously dominating, other wrestler resorts to grabbing headgear and yanking his opponent. From the stands, "C'mon ref! He's gonna throw him into the third row!" Ref shouts back, "Don't worry, there's only two rows!" He stops match and warns kid about headgear, don't remember if points were awarded.................

    Instant replay

I was watching Nebraska v Michigan dual last Fri nite. Nebraska contested a call and the referee went to the table to watch a video. The original call was upheld. I thought the call was good too, not that I was asked! I don't see a need for replay in wrestling at the collegiate level. I thought this slowed down the match. It seemed to take the air out of this one match. The fact that the ref who made the call is the only one to watch the replay was perplexing. Doubtful that a ref would overturn his own call. I hope to see stats at year's end on the percentage of calls that get overturned. My bet is 10% or less. Not worth the trouble.

Hawk_Eye, I finally saw a situation that gave replay some creedence. During a scramble in the Penn St v Wisco match time expired. Ref said no td as bottom wrestler still had control of ankle. It was close, and even though the original call was upheld I am glad they went to the replay screen. Now, this happened at the end of a period so the flow of the match was not entirely disrupted. But, maybe I am warming up to the idea!
  9. Even in this age of instant information this was still a valuable tool. Brian was able to upload this to the internet. I think he is ready to pass the torch. I recall the days of going through newspaper results to try and cobble together some sense of perspective for the state tournament. Brian's work freed up a lot of spare time for me His work will be missed.

None per Intermat, but perhaps in another ranking. They have a number of tough wrestlers and are a solid team in dual format. Richards at 138, Vettesse at 160, and Shadaia at 195 are having strong seasons. Interestingly, Michigan still goes by the old weight classes. So Shadaia for example, wrestles 189 in Michigan but will go 195 at Western Brown. As an aside, I did not see Toal listed for T.C. He and Running would be a great finals.

    New state location idea.

Quite honestly, I had no recollection of the bracket until you brought it up. I had to go look it up. It was a tough bracket no matter how you cut it. Lopsided? That is a bit much. No bracket is perfect. Seeding won't fix that either. "Crooked"? No way. You could say that had Mines won his district things would have slotted differently in the bracket. But, that is why you wrestle and not look at the "on paper" stuff. Mines faced district 2, 1, 1, 1 on his way to winning it. That is what you get for placing 3rd at district. He earned it. What event did Stephen beat Newhouse? Ironman, or state duals I am guessing.

    New state location idea.

I see where you are coming from in regards to best match ups in semis. It does happen, every year. If your example is Stephen's freshman year then......I just looked at that bracket. Mines, Newhouse, Collica, Myers, Bright, Ague, Timchenko. Packed and stacked! Myers with 9-8 win over Collica in qtrs. The bracket looked pretty darned level to my eyes. One side had Bright, Ague, Newhouse, Timchenko. Other side had Myers, Collica, Mines, Boyd. Results 1 thru 8: Mines, Newhouse, Myers, Boyd, Gray, Bright, Timchenko, Griffith. What stands out to me is the fact that Ague and Collica did not place. The finals was between Mentor District #1 Newhouse and Mentor District #3 Mines. The Mentor District, as always, is a meat grinder. Collica beat Mines in District semis. Newhouse beat Ague. Newhouse over Collica for 1st, Mines over Ague for 3rd. On the other hand Myers was the only one out of the Fairfield District to place at state. Yes, he was so very close to beating Mines in semis. He was the only one from Fairfield District to place at the state. So I don't see any kind of conspiracy. What I do see (which is an annual event) is the Mentor District representing well with two finalists. Mines came out of district a #3 and beat the same district #1 in finals. So using the District placing numbers Myers saw a 4, 2, 3, 3, 1. Losing to #3 Mines in semis. Bright, also a #1 seed like Myers saw a 4, 2, 1, 1, 3. Placed 6th losing to #1 Newhouse in semis, then #1 Boyd in conso semis, followed by loss to Gray in the 5/6 match. I would say the deck was stacked against the hated St Edward's wrestler Bright.

    New state location idea.

Is there a state that seeds the tournament? Honest question....... In a perfect world (you know, the one in which all wrestlers have the same schedule)it would be easy to do, however we are not there. Seeding via Regional placement is the best we've got. The problem comes in the fact that with eight Regionals feeding the tournament it is more than likely to have a few unbalanced brackets. The way to seed more accurately would be to implement another step, Districts. This way the fish are filtered out and the placers are slotted the same as Regionals. The true top guys rise up and are separated. The difference being 16 man brackets. Yes, we've been down that road and it does not seem to be popular. The brackets on both sides are even though, as a pre-determined (meaning way before sectionals and districts) pairing of Districts is used. No funny stuff.

    Growth in Wrestling in Kentucky

I agree with this statement 100%. To build any program it is necessary to build from the ground up. Begin with the youth program. I have however changed my stance on the 32 man bracket. As the curent format sits, regional -> state, cutting the bracket in half would definitely leave some good kids at home. This would mean taking the top two from each region. If the asociation would add in a district event in front of the state championship then a 16 man bracket would work well. The state meet would be much more entertaining as well (no fish).

That was my impression as well. I believe Austin can counter Boyd all day. Austin is a smart wrestler. I remember Becker. He had great feet and his win in the state finals was something to see, fighting off a deep shot against undefeated Barlow in OT then getting the takedown. 2007? 2008? That was a strong team.

Never blasted the video. It is rare that a video gets posted on any site. Therefore, it is more than reasonable to believe that the video would be something spectacular. It was not. That is not "blasting". No childish words using @#$* , just adult talk. Sorry if I hurt your feelings. Speaking of videos, I saw the Hemkreiter/Boyd match on Flo long before any chatter of Hammer/Anvil hit another board. Boyd is a big kid, looks thicker than Hemkreiter but not as tall. He does not seem to be in very good shape as Hemkreiter basically fell on top of him as Boyd gassed big time in the 3rd. I believe he is the highest returning placer in his weight class and, rightfully so earned the #1 DIII rank entering the season. Next rankings come out in a week or so and he will not be #1, might drop out of top 5? This is not meant to take the wind out of your sail, as you have tried to hype this match up. Hopefully the #1 ranked Boyd shows up and gives Austin a match. Back on topic. The Rochester, Mich team has a few studs that can rack up points. Even though Hillsboro beat CC earlier I still think CC wins it.

????????????? How 'bout this: I think Austin is waaaaaaay better than Boyd. Austin beat Hemkreiter who in turn beat Boyd. It is not a stretch to say that Austin should win. Folks had made mention about match ups. I think Austin will destroy Boyd, that is all. And, for the record I think Austin would win DIII. Hope I cleared this up for you.

Hemkreiter majored Boyd. Unranked Brennock stuck Boyd last weekend. Myers with 1st period pin here. Over/under on time? I say 43 seconds. I know you are joking w/ Hamilton, it would be a bum deal if he received any type of suspension from the state. If the coach thinks otherwise that is okay. From what I have read he got jobbed and lost his cool for a moment.

Ha! Didn't notice that. True though. Imagine Stephen, with one loss getting the 2nd seed to some turd that went undefeated wrestling a crap schedule. Sure, he would hammer the kid when the time came around, but this is why it is tough to use the simple common sense method.

    Lakota Duals ,

This may be what you speak of............ With about 10 seconds to go, and Leonhardt (LW) up by two, they went out of bounds in the neutral position. The Campbell County kid then had 5 or 6 neutral false starts in a row with about 10 seconds to go, trying to jump a low single off the whistle and basically melting down. Finally after a clean re-start, Leonhardt was keeping a safe distance (hadn't been hit yet for stalling). The CC kid then stood up to quit the match and flipped his headgear in the air, and our kid took him down in a double-leg, as the match was still going on with time on the clock. The CC kid raised a fist to swing, but then was able to stop himself and walk away with no punch thrown. CC was DQ'd for walking off with time still on the clock, he was not ejected for fighting. Coach Bankemper, classy as always, immediately apologized to us and the official, and got his kid under control and had a talking to. After the dual the kid came over to apologize to myself and our team, much appreciated. He is a good kid and a good wrestler, just lost his mind for a moment. ......................................

    New state location idea.

Example: wrestler A goes 22-3 on the year with some big wins over top talent along with three losses to top talent vs wrestler B without big name wins and nor losses. Who would be ranked higher? Simple common knowledge says the CC wrestler that is battle tested and battle proven. However, there will be a contingent that do not believe this. Some will cry foul, claim fixed brackets.........And in turn what is happening is the wrestler that did not have the opportunity to see top comp is being penalized.
