    Caleb Ervin!!!!!

Got the 6th seed for Big Ten Championships. Received a bye and will probably see #3 seed Ness. Re-match of Ervin's "upset" win.

UofL Wrestling and some other thoughts

NKU seems logical to my untrainded eye. Basketball moved up to DI. Seems to be an interest in promoting athletics. I don't know much about the school, but a move to DI in hoops signals an emphasis on athletics. The locale is strategic as there is a fair amount of regional talent nearby.

Quickest Pin Awards @ State Tournament

Off of KHSAA all I could find is Nathan Boston had most pins in least total time.

    National DI duals

Mizzou is on a real roll right now, and at a good time. They dismantled Ohio State last week, winning 8 matches if memory serves. All the talk has been about Penn St, Ok St, and Iowa. Mizzou has been as quiet as a #6 ranked team can be.
  9. Just voted. Wrestling is out front, but let's not stop. Blow the others out of the water!

    Lawson Brothers

Hammer, meet nail. I agree with the above. My oldest was always one of the youngest in his class. We discussed holding him back, because he was not physically as mature as the others. Always one of the smallest. Thoughts of holding him back were dropped when we found wrestling. Funny how things worked out. The age thing never came up again until junior year of college. He did not turn 21 until the summer after junior year. Ha! He was 21 when he graduated. Don't regret keeping him moving along, not one bit. The way I see it, he can hopefully retire a year younger than his counterparts. As for holdbacks, the rules are in place for a reason. As long as the rules are followed I have no problem with it.

    NHSCA senior nationals or Flonationals?

I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. The mistake would be in doing nothing. Flonats has risen over the few years it has been around and has excellent video coverage. Coverage available to recruiters, and there are many at the event.

I guess we are jumping the gun. Best to wait until national letter of intent day? Or until some official announcement is made.

    Ask the Ref

I believe the rule states that once the defending wrestler touches the mat it is a takedown. I have seen it called this way many times, but I am not a ref. Stephen hit this same move against Marinelli. Same reaction (hand to the mat), same ruling (takedown). As for reaction time, well I don't know. The reaction was touching the mat, and Stephen had control on the way down. NCAA calls this a takedown instant the hand hits the mat. Not sure if high school is different. I like the move when it is "completed". In other words, when the scoring wrestler has his opponent down on the mat. When the defending wrestler is able to keep his feet there is no chance to ride and/or work for a turn. The scoring wrestler is off to the side and there is potential for a reversal.

    SEED The State Tournament!!!!

Further, you take a format like GOO's and then at state you can easily give separation to returning placers. What GOO has proposed is what works in Ohio. Everybody qualifies for one of 16 sectionals. Top four go to one of four districts, 16 man bracket seeded according to placement at sectional. Top four from each district goes to state. Again a 16 man bracket seeded according to placement at district. As GOO stated, this gives making it to state some creedence. Returning top placers are separated as best as possible. This can work for a 32 man bracket as well. Though I think 32 is way too many to qualify for state.

    SEED The State Tournament!!!!

Now you're talking! This, or something similar is the way to go. It works well across the river. Allow the kids to settle the "seeds" on the mat. The brackets even out. The only time this is not the case is if a top kid gets upset at the sectional level. Even so, that "top" kid just might have been overrated to begin with.

Great thread! I was looking at Intermat over the weekend and was thinking about starting this very thread. Keep growing this list.

    Ask the Ref

Well, you make a good point there! I have seen NCAA refs stick with their original call even after video review shows otherwise.
  20. crazyotto

    Ask the Ref

The ref could easily wave off the two, no problem. Happens often.
  21. crazyotto

    Ask the Ref

The ref did call it early. Has this guy reffed Stephen's matches before? The few times that I saw Stephen wrestle this year (per video) this seemed to be his go-to move. I am betting the ref had seen it before and was assuming the takedown. In the end, the call was made correctly.
  22. crazyotto

    Ask the Ref

Here no. Here yes. Once the defensive wrestler's hand touches the mat it is a takedown, assuming he is covered, which he was.

    Anywhere but Alltech, Please

The arena does play a part. Atmosphere is more about energy (of the fans) and imagination of the producers of the event. I watched the last two yrs finals via internet. The place looks pretty blah. Why? Is is the lighting? Bland mat? Poor camera work? I don't know, never been to Alltech. At the risk of being perceived as an Ohio snob I am posting links to a few pics https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ohsaa+wrestling+photos&biw=1600&bih=775&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&wrapid=tlif136129876579010&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=SsUjUa_TCOTC0QHa-YH4AQ#imgrc=zNQtCvo5kpGIdM%3A%3BFdhnVZlK0kQ4gM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.columbussports.org%252Fwp-content%252Fuploads%252F2013%252F01%252FOHSAA-Wrestling.BLOG_.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.columbussports.org%252Fblog%252F2013%252F01%252Fnew-team-event-highlights-ohsaa-wrestling-slate%252F%3B650%3B180 https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ohsaa+wrestling+photos&biw=1600&bih=775&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&wrapid=tlif136129887510410&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=t8UjUZOJHKaT0QH_8YCIDA#imgrc=KkhMQX_AxSbd7M%3A%3Ba0mDRPACSyhSJM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fhssn-media.advance.net%252Fohiohssports.com%252Fnews%252F6a070677621c834282ff3f0d35874f47%252Fmatnote.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fhighschoolsports.cleveland.com%252Fnews%252Farticle%252F8326272425264911552%252Fohsaa-wrestling-state-notebook-for-divisions-i-ii-and-iii%252F%3B1024%3B698 1st pic shows the three mats ready for finals.
