Brackets for state are based on placement in the region tournaments.  The 4 region champs get seeded on a conference call where criteria is discussed by coaches, starting with head to head, common opponents, then last years state placement (or lack thereof).  Everyone else then falls in the bracket based on their region placement following the region champ.  Rankings aren’t even discussed and have nothing to do with seeding at state.  Rankings are solely to give coaches and dads something to talk about ;-)

It seems to work nicely lol! Good job Mr. Duke.

Thanks Again Duke. Takes alot of work and time to keep this up. Keyandre Larry from Holmes is unfortunately out for the season. Broken leg.

I second that. Thanks a lot Mr Duke you do a great job.

Always, sorry to hear about Keyandre. Blue went through not being able to wrestle last year. We’ll be praying for the young man.

You can't wait for KY to get with the times. Seek out the best training environment for your son/daughter out of state if necessary and make the drive. If that is what your son/daughter wants, it is well worth the time and money. We were fortunate to have Nate Carr close when we were seeking out training opportunities. There are any number of places to choose from in Ohio.

I agree 100% with this post. That's why I'm traveling 2 hours to Carr academy for practice thur the week lol. It's well worth the money and time.

Why does it seem that “Fed Up” “Notorious” and “Bond James Bond” are all the same person? I thought we came on this forum as ourselves and debated, bantered, agreed and problem solved as ourselves? Is Tanger really Ranger or Dutch? Is Bulldog really Homes or CCarr and Duke has to be Richard Escalara but not as good looking!!! IM SO CONFUSED!!

    lol

I say without hesitation that Spencer Moore is the best middle school wrestler in the state.  I'm not sure you could add the national accolades of the next 5 wrestlers and have what he has. The only other middle school wrestler I can think of that has a national championship is who I would put at #2 Stephen Little. He's won Tulsa Kickoff Classic  Noah Duke's strongest performance that comes to mind is his very strong showing at high school state as a 7th grader would certainly justify 3rd but with his recent loss to Brayden Giannone I would have to put Brayden 3rd and Noah Duke 4th.  It's a shot in the dark from there on out but whoever is 5th is a distant 5th from this pack.  In fact, I would be willing to say 5 thru 10 are closer than 4th and 5th.

I would agree that Noah will be ready to go come state time, however, a loss is a loss.  Coming out of football or not so the nod goes to Giannone for now.

I agree the top 3 "Spencer, Giaonne, Duke anyway you type their names their the top 3" are a step above the rest. Their monsters but their not head and shoulders above say 4-6 or 7. 5 and 6 are closer to them then you think IMO.

It’s apparent who really follows wrestling when they leave a kid like Spencer Moore off the list. Spencer and Noah duke are the top two middle school wrestlers hands down. Spencer with his wins over nationally ranked kids and the fact that Noah is a top kid in the high school rankings. We are talking about competing in a big boy weight as an 8th grader. The last big boy in those weights as an 8th grader was Max Andreoni at 145 I believe. Max was able to compete with the big boys.

If Spencer Moore could get to at least 100 lbs he would win a high school state title at 106 this year.

Anyone that really follows KY wrestling would agree with me

Noah and Spencer are great great wrestlers but I don't think I'd say hands down they are the best kids in the middle school ranks. There a couple more kids that are pretty darn good to.

Same here.  My kid has always been wrestling and football.  He has decided to give up football and stick to wrestling year round. I have been coaching for a long time now, the injuries can happen no matter what.  But, proper training is key to avoiding them.  Playing a second sport does not help prevent injuries, its the different type of practices and training that will focus on muscle groups that might get missed in specialized training.  I put my kids that wrestle year round on a different fitness program during the "off season" than regular season.  We focus on strength and flexibility.  So far (knock on wood) my son, or any of my kids have had any injuries.

I agree with Coach T proper training "strength, flexibility, aerobic, conditioning, and nutrition" are very important in trying to cut down on injuries.

  8. My son "Blue" plays baseball, football, and wrestles. He also played basketball until 7th grade. I've talked to a few parents of kids who only wrestle. They've never really mentioned any down side to only wrestling year round. There is injurys in any sport it just comes with the territory. There are plus and minus in doing it either way.

I have a kid who is going to need the two lbs. He wrestled 92 in February and wrestles 113 now. Kid is growing at rate of like two lbs a month. Started the season at 110 and now weighs 113 on the dot. He will be lucky to stay under 115 by February. He is tall and lean and doesn't have much to lose. For kids like him the two pounds is crucial. Otherwise he will wind up in the bottom end of the next weight class.

Last December Blue was 105lbs soaking wet. At the start of October he was walking around at 127lbs now he walks around at 132lbs. So I know your pain.

  10. It's my understanding that all schools that helped out " table workers, concessions, gate, etc" got a cute from the middle school tournament. So Montgomery Co wasn't the only school benefiting from having MS state there. But I could be wrong everyone knows I have been before lol.

That is precisely my point. We have board members who are there only for themselves rather than for the kids. Politics is killing our ASSN. The whole purpose of the board and our ASSN. is to govern and protect our sport and athletes, however as of the last couple years our board has become a self serving entity. The state tournament was held for years at Montgomery County which was a great venue, now it is in Louisville Convention Center where they run out of concessions for the spectators, the coach's room is basically non-existent parking is expensive as well as admission . If they wanted to change locations why were the schools and clubs not given a chance to bid for the right to hold state tournament , we have several schools that could handle that capacity. It begs the question who's pockets are getting lined? If not that then what favors are being exchanged. In my opinion! I hope some members of our forum see this and start to question and make sure to attend coaches meetings and/or step up and run for a seat on the board to take us back to the system of what's best for our sport and our kids.

Moving MS state away from Montgomery County made zero sense to me aswell.

BlueD.  Once again if we middle school used the wt. decent plan along with the minimum wt. determination.  This would not be an issue.  Kids would lose wt. at a safe rate and still be at a healthy weight class.  The minimum percentage of body fat was not determined by random coaches but by people in the medical field. Ky uses the most rigorous decent plan method.  Each weigh in must be registered and will re-calculate the decent plan. (unlike Ohio who don't enter each weigh in and only use the 7% rule).

I would even be in favor of a second evaluation after the 2lb allowance for middle school kids.

This is a far cry from when I wrestled (many many many years ago).  I am certain that I was below 7% body fat as were many others that I wrestled with.  This was unhealthy and lucky for me I had no ill affects. OK maybe some small brain damage :)

I agree with everything you said. Good post.

I say it pretty much every year. We consistently see our best wrestlers coming through MS under 100 pounds. Not saying there are not great wrestlers above that. Just saying our best concentration of talent is always in the lower half. And when you look at the best HS wrestlers this state has seen over the last 20 years, many of them came through as small ms kids; a number of them down in the 70/75 range.

I agree with your statement. It has seemed in the past that the best wrestlers in MS have mostly been under 100lbs. Although this year I believe we have a mix of really great wrestlers at all weights. If you look at who "most" people would consider the top 6-8 kids in MS this year you will get kids ranging in almost all weights.

Also if a kid is wrestling at a high enough level while they are in 4th grade to be ranked. Rank them! My son has wrestled middle school since the 2nd grade. We didn't have rankings for MS then so I didn't have to worry about it lol.
