  1. That's why I have Blue wrestle in other states most of the time. He doesn't wrestle in Ky in youth tournaments very often. Last year during the belt series he got scr$&ed out of a match. He stuck a kid in a whip the ref pinned the kid held Blues hand up went to the table to sign the ballet sheet the kids coach came over crying they talk for about 3 or 4 minutes and he calls shoud for an illegal move. I went nuts. We left but that ref cheated Blue out of the belt that he worked his guts out for. It's not cheap for us to travel 3 hours 3 weekends in a row to get cheated out of something a 8 year old works hard for. Ky refs what can you say.

  2. I've never seen stalling called in youth wrestling in Ky. But I take Blue to PA, OH, Mich, WV, and VA a lot and it's called in most of those states a lot. PA and OH call their youth tournaments like Ky calls high school tourneys. I noticed at the Ky youth state tourney they were very hesitant to call points period. Blue stuck a kid in a cradle the ref gave no take down points or back points and only pinned the kid after he studded it up. He wasn't going to give a take down or back points and only gave the pin. I thought it was very weird the way the refs called the matches this past weekend.

  3. Ok, now that state is over, can we get some info about this event? Coaches were told that info would be handed out at state and it was never even mentioned. I have a few kids that placed top four and are planning to attend. It would be great if we could get a flyer and details. It seems that most people aren't even aware that this exists. I really believe we should make it a big deal and push for strong numbers.

I agree 100%. Blue is looking forward to this tourney. More info would be much appreciated.

  4. I agree. My son weighed in at 54.8 in his boxers on 2/08. He always wrestles Intermediate 55 when we wrestle out of state where they do weigh ins and weight classes. He weighed in under 55 at Indy Nationals two weeks ago. Yesterday he weighed 57.8 at 4:30pm with shoes, singlet, shirt and after eating two meals and snacks. We never fudge our weights, so I'd hate to be labeled a cheater when I'm not. However, if all the results being over causes us to have official weigh ins next year, I'm glad he was 3 pounds over:)

I agree 100%. My son weighed in at 71lbs fat on tuesday(he usually wrestles 70 out of state tourneys according to what he weighs) I think it was. Yesterday with all his clothes on and after eating all day he weighed 76. But I'm with you if this makes them have actual weight classes I'm fine with that.

  5. We will be checking the medalists as they wait in line on Sunday. I agree that it is not the kids that are cheating but the coaches submitting the weights/rosters. And if there are issues my guess is there will be consistent issues for certain teams/clubs. And we need to expose them and implement processes to address this in the future. And maybe we will find that in general everything is fine and weights are okay.

Here's my problem with this. When the kids got there medals today(evening session) they were wearing 4lbs of cloths at least counting there singlets, shoes, shorts, shirts, sweat shirts, knee pads, etc. They would have probably already have ate 3 times and had some junk food so they were going to weigh in heavy. So I'd say if a kid weighted 70lbs by the time he weighted in today he would've been at least 76-77 lbs counting the cloths. Because I know when my son weights in in his boxers. So I didn't understand this unless the kid is 10-12 lbs over then they were probably an issue with their weight to begin with.

  6. Have to agree with you on that that's why we wrestle the matches! Your a jc guy so you have to have faith in your team lol. Getting past

Burroughs, Scaggs, Lawson, Bindner, Roth, vega, Stephan's, or Thacker will be unlikely but anythings possible!

Blind faith is a wonderful thing...lol

  7. You maybe right but I still think he places if he wrestles the way he can. Against Sheffer he did not. But Sheffer is a great wrestler who beats him more times than not but Bowen can beat anyone if he wrestles the way he can. You never know what happens until you wrestle the matches.

  8. Which wrestlers from Johnson Central do you think will atleast make a run to the semi-finals this year?

I expect a few to make a run at the finals and a championship not just the semifinals. Sam Preston will win a state championship. Chase Blevins, Chris Niece, and Jordan Young will all make strong runs. TJ Bowen, Josh Jude, Geordon Blanton, and Jimmy Preston are all great and will place. JC is a strong team and will cause teams problems at state.

  9. There is one that I would consider a move-in and that would be Ryan Harlow. Corey Spencer is a Johnson Co native, as is Zach Salyers. JJ Jude has been in the Johnson Co school system since elementary school. Jayce Carr was another notable wrestler, who wrestled in the Campbell Co youth program, but moved to Johnson Co, where his mother grew up. He was there since middle school. He has since moved, as many know.

I can't give much info on the wrestlers from Sheldon Clark, but of the 16 or 17 state champs he coached there I do not believe any of them to be move-ins.

What you're implying about Johnson Central can be said for almost every top team in Kentucky, and on a much greater scale than what it is at JCHS.

Speaking of Jayce Carr and Campell Co. When he got to Johnson Co. he wasn't good enough to place in the region. When he left he had won a middle school championship and finished third in high school state the same year. So he learned a lot under coach Matney.

  10. That's why I asked the question was to get the answers. I was told that most of his champions followed him from Sheldon Clark when he went to Johnson and since I don't personally know the man or the situation the best way to get answers is to ask questions. But like I said I don't care either way because I think parents should do what they feel is best for their kids and I will always advocate that. I hope I didn't ruffle your feathers as I was in no way putting down your coach or school. On the same note I wanted to express my opinion that becominmg successful because of transferres is not the same as building a program (again I'm not saying that's the case at johnson its just a wholistic opinion).

No problem. I agree you have to take your kid were they have the best chance to succeed. That's why I take Blue to the Johnson County school system. Great academics, athletics, and coaches. Have to do what's best for your child.

  11. I agree Johnson seems to have a strong program that has domminated Region 8 recently. They have had 5 state champions since 2005 that is true. My question is how many of those 5 were originally from Jonson Central and how many were not. If you are bringing kids into the program then you are not building the program from the ground up or building it from nothing. I'm not bashing the fact that kids moved into Johnson because I think parents have the right to take their kids to whatever school they want for whatever reason they want after all it is their kids. The people who complain about such things either don't have kids or have their kids at the school they prefer. Anyway, I just wanted to put things into perspective on JC 5 state champs!

Your grasping for straws guy. Just give credit were credit is due. Regardless if your a fan of coach Matney or not (I'm not saying you are or aren't a fan of coach) you have to give the man credit. He builds programs no matter were he's at. Out of his 26 state champions one can be considered a move in. Harlow would be the only one. He works his tail off training these kids and builds champions. If you wanted to know if Johnson Central was for real or not you should've just checked put state duels this year. Everyone was just so sure Union and Moore would finish top 2 in small school. But JC did the unattainable and beat Moore pretty well if I may add to move to the finals against Union. So yes JC and coach Matney are for real.

  12. If they love the sport they will stick with it. I mean this is how we were introduced to the sport and we stuck with it. I drove over 500 miles round trip just this past weekend for my son to wrestle 2 tournaments. We were at the gym for 8 1/2 hours the first day for 5 matches. The second day we were there for over 6 hours for 5 matches. So what's the difference in them going through the same experiences as the rest of us. My 9 year old son has done it the last 3 years and loves every second of it. I get a little tired but seeing his face after he wins these tournaments his priceless and I wouldn't change a thing. Infact I wouldnt take anything for the time he and I have spent together for the long hours in these ratty gyms. So introduce them to it. If they like what comes with it great, if not let em move on if they want to. Wrestling will go on and grow with the kids and parents that love it and nit just tolerate it.

  13. You must be thinking of someone else. The last time Shirkey/Blanton wrestled was in 2009 Middle School State at 82 lbs and Shirkey won 6 to 3. Also I believe Blanton was in 5th grade then and Shirkey was in 6th. This year Shirkey is in 10th grade and Blanton is in 8th. A lot of time has passed since then.

Maybe your right but I thought they wrestled last year for aome reason. You can say what you want to but Blanton can hang with those guys. May not beat them but he for sure wouldn't get majored. Your right alot of time has passed and Blanton has got a lot better.

  14. Bluesdad- Who did he wrestle from Ohio that was number 1 and by what ranking? I follow Ohio a lot and read the last Brakemen report so I would be curious to know the name. Also with me being very familiar with Ohio teams what schools did Johnson Central compete against? Just because you compete in Ohio doesn't mean you’re wrestling the "Ed's" of the world. Ohio has some great teams but there are some pretty bad ones too.

I remember years ago Conner use to go to Lebanon Duals, Finneytown, and Valley View. We either won or finished 2nd in every one of those tournaments. We were a solid team, finished 7th that year at state, but by no means would I call any of the teams we faced there a "top Ohio" team. A lot of time here in Northern Kentucky we talk about us wrestling in Ohio and facing this stellar competition but at the end of the day, outside SWOWCA, GMVCA I think we tend to over exaggerate the quality of competition. Now with saying that there are weight classes at Wadsworth, Hammer, Fairfield that are loaded weight classes but as a whole they are not the best representation of Ohio wrestling.

I was talking with some parents this weekend at regionals and the debate came up with some parents from CC, Ryle, and Walton as to which tournament would you rather go to: SWOWCA or GMVCA. I personally felt like if you take out Moeller from SWOWCA and Graham from GMVCA then I think CC, Ryle or SK could win those tournaments. Having just one or two heavy hitters in a field doesn't make that tournament "that much better" as some would like to say.

Mpire you have more knowledge then probably all of us on this debate so I would be very curious to see what you had to say. Back to what I was saying before thou, Bluesdad does JC go to Parkerburg anymore for their HUGE tournament? And who has Preston and Blanton wrestled and lost too this year? I do think Blanton can hang for one match against Parrott, and by hang I mean keep it within a maj.dec. However, I did say Adams would run through Region 6 and that didn't happen.

Morgan kid from Lakeside OH OWC rankings I think

  15. Thanks for the info.......My bodyguard is a 6'7" size 17 shoe wearing Freshman that's in that Blevins group....he he he. Got to have one after posting in here sometimes.! Should be some great battles for the BIG BOYS.......I do like Josh Jude and JT Siler a lot.......There are some real good wrestlers coming out of that Region 8 and happy to see you stick by them. I am the same way in Region 7......Pulling for those homeboys !

Is Young your son? If so he's a great kid and wrestler. Talked to him some last year at middle school matches. I think him and Blevins has a shot to match up. Should be fun.

  16. First off anything can and does happen at state so you can throw the head to heads out the window.

As to do I think Geordon can go toe to toe with Parrot, sure I do. He anyone can wrestle with anyone for one match. Geordon resume is solid. He has wrestled top kids from Va, Wv, and Oh all year and won. Does that mean he beats Parrot? No it doesn't.

While these predictions are my opinion I truly feel try can come true. While some maybe my region 8 bias (lol) I have confidence in these kids like many others from other regions do in there's kids. While I may not be correct on all I think I will on most.

Also something else about Blanton being able to hang with these guys. When he wrestle Shirky last Shirky won 3-1. So yes I think he can hang with them.
