Interesting Article on Possible Middle School Athletics Regualtions
Travis Baney replied to cmccoy's topic in 2012 Season
I believe if you cut middle school student athletes out of high school wrestling, there will be a noticable regression in the competition. I understand about safety, but if the wrestler can hold their own and their parents agree with them competiting at a higher level, then it should be fine. There is also the point of not being able to fill full teams. Sure some kids will take some lumps if they start as a 7th grader, but by the time they are a frosh or soph, they'll be the ones dominating. I'm going to go with the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." -
Interesting Article on Possible Middle School Athletics Regualtions

Interesting nothing was said about basketball. I remember when I was in Middle School we had a kid who had significantly playing time for the high school basketball team as a 7th and 8th grader. -
As far as his weight, I've seen plenty of wrestlers gain +15 lbs over one summer and he is only a Soph. If he does gain weight I would suspect him to still wrestle the same.

Looks great! Makes me want to leave work right now!

2012 State Tournament Ranger Report
Travis Baney replied to Ranger123's topic in High School Rankings
Thank you again Ranger. You make the sport more fun and interesting. So much for your rankings not being "accurate" or "trustworthy." -
I believe Todd Allen had a pretty decent career after high school. Maybe nothing like Dominic Black, but good in his own right.

Eliminating Middle School Wrestlers from High School teams
Travis Baney replied to bigedcoach's topic in 2012 Season
Let the best wrestler wrestle. One of my teammates, who was a Frosh first year wrestler, got beat by a 7th grader (2 yrs exp) for the starting spot. I believe he eventually one the spot back, I'm not for sure. He worked his butt of everyday of practice and eventually cracked the starting line up and was very successful for our team. If this scenario had not played out he may not have worked as hard and not achieved as much. You need people to push you no matter the age of the wrestler. Plus think what type of leader the MS can become by the time he is a Frosh or Soph with as much varsity experience or more than some of the upper classman. It is hard for me to visualize a situation where having MS wrestle up doesn't improve your wrestling room. -

These two websites trackwrestling.com and nwca.com have results. -
I would welcome any kid and any grade. I think an explanation of what is going on may be in order so they know practice won't be basic but more advanced and conditioning will only get tougher. The longer they have to wait to get on the mat the further they get behind. Being part of a new program I have encouraged my wrestlers to get their friends out and participate and I encourage them to wrestle throughout the summer. The best way to gain experience is to participate.

State Duals Split into Big School/Little School
Travis Baney replied to bigedcoach's topic in 2012 Season
We could start splitting the state to "years of experience." Wouldn't that be the best competitive advantage? Schools with 1-5 years wrestle each other in their own state duals and indvidual state. That would help the competition level, right? I know several large schools that can't fill a roster so that argument should be invalid. Terrible idea. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Let the best teams from each region compete. -

Thank you for all your hard work Ranger! Very nice rankings. -
We have them every week normally on Monday/Tuesday. The reason it can span over 2 days is because the challenger has to win twice and the varsity wrestler just has to win once. So if varisty is challenged on Monday and they lose they have to wrestle again on Tuesday. If varsity wins Monday they challenger has to wait until next Monday to challnege again. Ran as a regular wrestling match 3 2 minute peiods.

I would have to say that 138 will be the toughest. You are basically combining 135 and 140 of last year. This will be a very competitive class.

I have wrestled with music and coached with it and without it. As a wrestler it really helped me, especially during conditioning. As a coach I can see that it has a positive impact on practice and the general mood of the wrestlers. They seem to work harder and have more of an upbeat attitude.
