Are USA Wrestling cards (insurance) really necessary?

Curious as to why you think the KHSAA will get involved, and why you think they should?

Are USA Wrestling cards (insurance) really necessary?

The KHSAA Coverage is only a buy in, into a bigger catastrophic coverage plan, that if you read the fine print, doesn't necessarily cover any athletes at any level.) (KHSAA fees, buys the High School in.) Each school district has to have its own separate an unique liability/general insurance policy. Some districts are buy in policies, (just like car insurance and home insurance) others are self funded insurance plans. (Pike Co has a self funded plan for example.) In either case the district itself has to get said insurance plan that covers them. Now Keith Smith is right as well, SOME school districts do not have catastrophic insurance that covers their athletic teams in any form. Some do have it, as a buy in additional to the standard coverage a school has to have to cover all students in the classroom, however as of 2014 (which was the last time I was heavily involved in all the insurance stuff) about 85% did not have it. Keith is also right that to my knowledge (going back to 2014) Jefferson Co, was the only Major district to have its own Catastrophic Insurance plan that covered all their enrolled students in the district. Those that are saying they do have it, as they label the kids as a "JV", that may be correct in their cases, however I think that only covers 7th grade and up students, so any younger kids may not be covered under that (unless there is a rider/buy in for that.) Again, that will be a district by district thing.

    Farnham Dudgeon Civic Center

Not sure you can blame the current Governor or Councils for this though. They are just the ones having to deal with the issue at hand. The civic center was a huge loss to the state, almost 1.5-3 million a year for a better part of a decade. (before wrestling left.) In reality, it should have been scraped before the put the money into it to make it ADA compliant, specifically since KSU built the on campus arena. Better to tear down the old, stop the money losses and possibly do something in the future.

This picture isnt of the Civic Center, its of the parking garage that was next to the tower.

John Hardin Veterans Memorial MS Tournament/Spots open

Actually when KSWA went to USA Wrestling rules, its only a minimum of 15 minutes between matches.

    Live Stream

There would be a Title IX case if they provided live stream for other sports and did not for wrestling championships.

    State Finals

Actually thats not totally true, there was venue conflict with the horse park and the dates State actually took place were the first open dates it could.

    State Finals

More than likely its UK womens schedule and cost of facilities. Plus being on campus creates a few more issues to work around.

    State Finals

The group that puts on the Farm Machinery Show books up the entire fairgrounds for the two weeks they are their. Nothing is available.

    State Finals

Unless KHSAA changes the dates, anything at the fair grounds is out of the running.

    State Finals

They had to become ADA compliant and put handicap ramps in, which took up more floor space. You could only get two mats down on floor now.

    State Finals

They cant, Civic Center can no longer host wrestling events due to its new configuration.

Do the numbers support having Districts?

Kswa actually losses money on districts and regions now. With the change in USA wrestling fees to sanction the event it cost more than 450 for sanction fee and awards.

KSWA 2016 Fall meeting Voting Results

To be honest i dont remember there being much discussion about it for middle school once we hashed it out for youth with what would be acceptable.

KSWA 2016 Fall meeting Voting Results

I know on the proxy ballots 3 coaches voted yes for youth and no for middle school. I believe a few at the meeting did as well.

Waiting on the rest of the board to review the wording on the three clarification items we had to address and will send out once I hear from them.

I completely get everything you have said. When discussion topics went out for the spring meeting I got 4 replies from coaches wanted to discuss this topic, which we did, heck we discussed awards not being big enough, to the color of the ribbons on the medals being unique to more serious topics. Until today, no other discussion has come up, the ballots have been out since August 11, thats almost a full month. What else are we as officers to do, the information is out there and crickets, until 11 days before the fall meeting. I have received one ballot via mail. 1, from a coach that can never attend the meetings, but he sent me his ballot on August 23.

One of the discussion points on this issue in the spring was "where is the high school going with this". I believe two states currently allow for shorts and t shirts. (California and Arizona, maybe, somebody correct me on that please) I knows as far as the KHSAA Wrestling Advisory Committee it wasn't a topic for discussion. That specifically is why there are two votes on the matter. One for youth and one for Middle School. I know the general thought at the spring meeting was youth would be acceptable, but middle school needed to be singlets only.

I will agree with you the cost angle is almost gone, as prices are very similar today.

Have at it, just make sure the ribbons on the medals are different colors for each place and not all the same. That was a complaint by multiple coaches last year.

Neither, I think I would prefer to wear the bear suit, lol.

I am not sure I follow you on the self image issue. Whether a tight singlet, or tight compression shorts and Tshirts wouldn't the image be the same? it's still tight fitting and conforming to the body is it not? I wish you could have been at the spring meeting as involved as you are, because as a whole I agree that many of the off the hip decisions that had been/were made did a great benefit. However not everyone agreed with that and why there are so many proposals for this fall's vote. There are many members in the association (teams/coaches) that want that to stop, and that things be guidelined, and hashed out on paper, via vote, so that the standard is set so to speak to minimized things being done off the cuff. I get that, I understand that.
