First- Big Thanks to Ryle, Coach Ruschell and his group for always putting on a great event. The competition of this event is awesome solid and the tournament is always ran very smoothly. Dave Johnson does a great job on keep this event running on time and is very organized. Walton had a good weekend. Although we were missing our 285/220 pounder due to ACT, we were able to be competitive and had a good showing. A lot of great teams this year at the Rumble and it was a battle all day. We were fortunate and lucky enough to come out on top. I can tell you this, our thoughts weren't going into this tournament as to "WIN IT", we have our kids focusing on getting better each day and let the results play out as they will. Too many good teams this year. We are just trying to keep these guys healthy and focusing on one day at a time! Once they start looking ahead, this is when you come up short. Now to close the IRONMAN talks: We had four kids invited: Moore, Roth, Smith and Mulcahy. We chose to keep the team together for every event this year. We have several seniors and a good group of kids and we want each week to be based on "TEAM" vs Individuals. You can disagree, but our kids wanted to stay together as a Team. That is what we have decided to do this year! Best of luck to everyone this season and stay safe! Coach Roth

Great Topic and points from everyone. Sorry to hear about Eastern, that program has been around for long time and has had some great kids come from there. Hopefully they get it back! My two cents on this. I agree 100% that making it FUN is by far the most important thing. We have way too many parents living through their kids and pushing their kids to be this or that. Sometimes its the parents goals and how the parents feel and how they look when they can brag about what their child has done or accomplished. I've seen it first hand. Yes, there are some kids that just enjoy it and want to put the time in because of THEIR GOALS, not their parents. I myself went through a time where my son wanted to put in the time and travel all year round. I loved it because I'm so passion about the sport. BUT, it also caused me to push him at times when he didn't want too. This is where, I became that parent and focused on what looked good about ME and didn't really hear my own son and what he wanted. Well, that has been the best lesson and very humbling for me as parent and a coach. My son has choose to play soccer the past three years and skip many wrestling off season workouts. SHOCKING-that he has enjoyed his wrestling seasons more now then in years past because not having to go through the grind all year long. Now, I'm not saying that training in the off season is bad, I'm just saying that it should be what the kids want to do and not what their parents are making them do. Placing at State or winning State or placing at top national events are great things, but to me its only worth it if the kid placed the pressure on themselves to achieve those goals and not the pressure of parents or coaches. GOO, you made some great points. Kids will show up if they want too. Although I do get frustrated when I try to schedule things and only get 3-5 kids, knowing that there should be at least 10-15 kids there that aren't doing anything but sitting at home. But you can't make them come to workouts, its not about US as coaches or parents. Its about us giving them the opportunity to become better young men and women first then get better as athletes last. I'm sure many may disagree with my thoughts on this, so be it. All I know is that my own kid is much happy now and enjoys wrestling way more with him having his time away in the off season to pursue other activities. He has said that he would like to "win state", but if it happens it will, if not, its just not meant to be. He tells me all the time that GOD has plans for him and that winning state may not be one of them! When its all done with, I want his memories to be that he enjoyed his last years of wrestling having "FUN" vs winning any State Title if he his miserable trying to do it or make his coaches or parents happy due to unwanted pressure add to him or any kid for that matter.

WVHS Bearcat Brawl - December 2

For FR/GR - Fargo, nothing touches this! Folkstyle - IRONMAN in my opinion is by far the toughest. S32, yes is super tough, but you get 150 man brackets because anyone pretty much can get into this event. Not to forget, you also have FLO and Virginia Beach (NHSCA). Ironman- You have to have a solid wrestling resume to get in this event. You just don't sign up for this and get in! But all of these events are definitely meat grinders. Id rank them in this order regardless the style of wrestling. 1: Fargo 2: Ironman 3: Flo (I put Flo just ahead of S32, just a little, because kids just finished up the regular season and have been training for NHSCA and Flo. I feel kids are more at their top wrestling skill level/conditioning vs S32, where kids are just getting started into the up coming season. 3.5: S32 4: NHSCA

Ryan Moore has committed to continue his academic and wrestling career at CORNELL UNIVERSITY! Ryan, definitely deserves this opportunity. He has put the time in to make this happen. Ryan is one of the hardest working wrestlers I've ever been around or coached. Both in the classroom and on the mat. I'm very proud of him and excited to watch him at the next level. Congratulations Ryan!!! GO BIG RED!!!

Great Topic. I love the older than dirt comment. That is great!!! My daughter tells me i'm half dead all the time. lol! But I'm not that old. Been involved in coaching at all levels for 15 plus years. However this is my 3rd season as HC with WV. But most of all the kids that have come through our HS program have come up with me through the MS Level. GOO,,, I think you have a few mud clots on me though. A lot of great coaches out there. Charger hit the nail on the head, ITS ALL PASSION. I agree. No one I know of coaches for the money. Its always about building a solid competitive team. Helping kids reach their potential and getting them to really believe in themselves. If you happen to grab a few stats along the way, so be it...My main goal has always been to touch these kids life and making them better people for our society.

DRAW CARDS!!!!! Thats my point. Put the byes on the bracket FIRST! Yes rjs, I think this is by far best way to handle this. Yes it takes a little time, but I think its fair!
-
Nike Man.. If you see my previous post. I stated, I think we need to put/place the BYES into the bracket First. Before anything else.
-
exactly!
-
Yes normally you would go to 8 man bracket. My point is to make it fair on even playing field. Some weight class will not be full. Heck Region 4 120 had like 4 kids. So not one wrestler is receiving 2-3 byes vs another wrestler, if you can prevent this.
-
OK, what about this, regarding bracket tournaments. Lets say you have 12 kids for wt class 145. You use a 16 man bracket. So you are saying that those kids receiving byes should get max points? What about a weight class that has 6 kids in it. Do you still create a full 16 man bracket with a bunch of byes and still expect for that kid to receive max points for like two or maybe three byes in a row before they even get a real match to wrestle?
-
GOO is correct. If a kid makes weight and shows up for a dual, he should get the win if the other team has no one to wrestle that other wrestler. Regarding tournaments (Bracket Individual tournaments), you can select to have the BYES to be randomly drawled into the bracket. I know on track you can do this. However even with this, they seem to sometimes always go to the top 4 seeds getting the BYE. Not always but it seems to put the BYE on one of those lines. My suggestion would be to do this. If you have 12 kids that are entered, lets say at 145 pound weight class. Before any seeding takes place for that weight class, I would have the coaches vote or place the byes first on the bracket. Then I would seed the kids and then let the computer/track randomly place the other wrestlers into the bracket. So you would need 4 byes for this weight class. And if you know your going to have 6 seeded kids. Take the lines or seed places/positions on the bracket out! This way you can't place a bye on those lines (because that's where the seeded kids will go). Then have someone pull two byes for the top side of the bracket out of hat or something, and have someone pull two byes for the bottom half of the bracket. Place those byes and then drawl in the other wrestlers.

GOO you're showing your age lol. What I remember, I know in 1988 and I think through 1989/1990 the State Champs all received a jacket, it was like a windbreaker type. The whole jacket thing didn't last very long. Medals were top 4, I believe they started giving out medals for top 6 in 1988, 1989 or it may have been 1990. They always gave out decent size bracket boards and brought in someone to fill them out. They were pretty nice. The finalist received a photo.
