Thanks for the hard work all season. Really looking forward to the report! It was great last year to read and be able to know which kids to look out for / watch matches last year when there are so many kids you never see throughout the season.

I agree with oldwrestler81. Maybe I'm just as biased at good old dad, but I can see Cornett taking it to Meyers. Cornett just beat Darrow last week and the kid always seems to wrestle well against strong competition. Big kid matches are always close and I think this one could go either way.

Zach Morris from Dixie Heights is the kid who beat Meiman. He also had a hell of a match against Jones at the beginning of the year only losing by a couple of points.

They do a tournament like that... It's the NKAC conference tournament. Though some of the region 6 teams are not apart of the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference. (there was a huge tiff thrown about this at the coaches meeting). Another thing NKY lacks is the amount of weekly dual meets teams scheduled against each other compared to ten years ago. (It's been that long since I wrestled, I'm almost an old man now). I remember the jamboree dual meet, and then every week we would wrestle a dual against another NKY team, by the time regionals / state came around, seeding was easy b/c most everyone had seen everyone else. We've gotten away from this. The powerhouse teams can fill their schedule with better competition and not "waste time" by wrestling a few matches at schools with smaller programs, win duels by default, and get their team better matches. In this region you can almost bank the ryle / CC will take at least ten kids to the state tournament each, leaving the rest of the region to fill in the few remaining spots. I know Dixie will take at least two (Cornett and Castallano) and depending on the cards could take as many as seven (Scaggs, the younger Castallano, Crowder, Z. Morris, and Furman). I'm no longer associated with the program (Had to get a big kid job), but will be helping at the middle school level. I look for these 7 kids to place at regionals this year. I hope they do, but that's coming from a biased perspective. Gone are the days where half the wrestlers in the region / state make the state tourney. And I'm more than okay with that.

Just b/c there isn't a mcdonalds, TGI Fridays, or Applebees within walking distance of the dungeon doesn't mean there isn't a good place to eat. Half of the charm of downtown frankfort is the fact that those places aren't abundant. I have been to probably half of the restaurants listed above and they all seemed pretty family friendly and thankful to have the tournament there that weekend. BTW Buddys pizza is great! Some of the best pizza I've ever had.

An illegal slam is either going to be considered unnecessary roughness of a technical violation, either way, there would need to be a combination of 4 of these for the match to end in a DQ (unless injury time was caused by the slam, and the wrestler was not able to continue). Normally, the violator would be penalized as follows: first offense - one point; second offense - another point for his rival; third offense - two points for his adversary; and fourth offense - disqualification. "Item 6: UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS Any intentional act that is hazardous to an opponent's physical well-being is considered unnecessary roughness. Furthermore, if a hold is utilized for the sole purpose of punishment alone, the referee may see fit to declare unnecessary roughness. Such perpetrations as striking, kicking, butting with the head, elbowing, and forceful tripping are examples of this infraction. Normally, the violator would be penalized as follows: first offense - one point; second offense - another point for his rival; third offense - two points for his adversary; and fourth offense - disqualification. However, when the official believes the unnecessary roughness of the wrestler to be totally inexcusable, he can indicate a "flagrant misconduct" signal, which is an automatic disqualification and the deduction of ALL team points scored in the event. Certainly, a sucker punch to the jaw would fall under this category. Q: Wrestler A shoots a hard double leg, causing Wrestler B to hit his head on the mat forcefully when taken down. The match had to be stopped to check if Wrestler B was injured. Would this be considered unnecessary roughness on the part of Wrestler A? A: Wrestler A would not be penalized with unnecessary roughness. It was a legal move similar to a hard tackle in football. Item 7: TECHNICAL VIOLATIONS There are six technical violations in wrestling and all are penalized in the following manner: First Offense - 1 penalty point (for opponent); Second Offense - 1 penalty point; Third Offense - 2 penalty points; Fourth Offense - Disqualification. Let's now consider wrestling's six technical violations: "Leaving the Mat Proper" -- No wrestler may completely step off the wrestling mat without permission of the referee. "Intentionally Going Out-Of-Bounds" -- If either wrestler goes out-of-bounds to avoid wrestling his opponent for any reason (except when near-fall points are scored), this technical violation will be enforced. "Grasping of Clothing" -- A contestant may grab nothing but his opponent while wrestling or this encroachment will be called. Furthermore, when a wrestler grasps his adversary's uniform to prevent him from scoring , the appropriate penalty point(s) will be given along with any points his opponent may have obtained. "Interlocking or Overlapping Hands" -- The offensive (or top) wrestler may only lock or touch hands around his opponent's body or both legs when he is scoring near-fall points or his antagonist stands up. If his rival scores points while he commits this violation, his opponent would also receive the stipulated penalty point(s). Note, the official can only stop the match to award point(s) when the bottom man is unable to gain an escape or reversal due to interlocking or overlapping hands. "The Figure-4 Head Scissors" -- The figure-4 head scissors is a technical violation in the neutral position. "Improperly Equipped" -- Reporting to the scorer's table, not properly equipped, or not ready to wrestle or any equipment that is detected as being illegal after the match has started is a technical violation. " Durbin won because injury time ran out and he was unable to continue, not because the slam itself caused the DQ.

One of my wrestlers was illegally slammed in the quarters. Had he "not been able to continue" he would have advanced to the semis and been guaranteed at least 6th place. He was not injured and hopped right up, and ended up losing his next two matches, knocking him out of the tournament the round where if you win, you place. But had he really been injured he would have probably injury defaulted out the rest of his matches. Had he not been injured, and just faked it to advance, you can guarantee he would have heard more than an earful about sportsmanship in the back of the arena. Coaches that tell their kids to say down have no class. Coaches that don't let their kids fake an injury might not have any state places, but are teaching their boys what it means to be men. Real men don't cheat their way into a victory. I'd rather have a team of kids that work hard and compete ethically and go two and out at the tournament than a team of state placers that get there on a technicality. Not taking anything away from Durbin. The kid wrestled a hell of a finals match against the monster Hardy, just from a complete outsiders perspective with no dog in the fight, his mean of getting there can look a little shady. Everyone can get online and trash the kid and his coach, be we don't know the details, and can do nothing about it anymore.

I do understand the concerns for travel for some of the teams and families coming from the far reaches of the state but from Frankfort to Lousiville it's only about an extra hour of commute time, and from frankfort to NKY it's about an hour and a half, which isn't that much more of a time/cost commitment. I am from NKY, and it would be nice to sleep in my own bed during the tournament, so this may be biased, but to make an argument for NKU's arena there is plenty of hotels in the area. While it doesn't have the connivence that the dungeon does with a short walk across the plaza, there are many hotels within a ten minute drive (many teams while in Frankfort are already opting to stay a few miles down the road). There are also numerous restaurants near NKU's campus. None of them compare to the breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant in Frankfort, but there are options there. I think since switching to the 32 man bracket and 3 days, more space for mats is needed. They can keep the tournament at 3 days but it would significantly cut down on the round times if 6 or 8 mats could be rolled out.

I've seen Jude (1) and Troxell (5) wrestle. I've also seen the 5 kids ranked 6-10 ranked wrestle at some point in time this season. All I'm saying is that compared to the competition at 171 that I've seen, JJ Jude seems to be at a level beyond anyone else in the state. I may be eating my words come next Saturday, we'll just have to wait and see.

Didn't mean to leave his name out, but he included as one of those five kids from region 6 that could go and place. Jones, Ahern, Supe, Yocum, and Hamilton all have what it takes to place. But if they all stay at 130, then one of them will not go to wrestle at the tournament.

I'm an idiot. Fahy will it at 125. Let me have a redo on that last post then... The 130 from region six that ends up going as an alternate could wrestle at 125 or 135 and place. Of course dropping at this point, if they haven't certified can't happen, and Herald couldn't go up to 135 b.c of Cooper, ect. but you get what I'm saying. A good kid, and possible placer won't make it to state if they all stay at 130.

I know. It always stinks when a kid who could go to state in any other region doesn't because his weight is stacked in his region. I was more so wondering if any regions could possibly have 2 placers wrestling each other in the first round because they were that deep. But I do look forward to see who comes out of region 6 at 130. At 119, Region 6 and Region 1 have 3 kids each ranked in the top ten, which (depending on the draw) could present some interesting matches in the first round of the tournament if the regionals end up finishing like Ranger has in the most recent rankings. Another reason to seed the state tournament? (Only kidding, that topic has been beat to death already) Are their any other weights where 3 or 4 placers could all come out of the same region?
