Saw Jude wrestle for the first time this year on Saturday, and if they were to remake "Vision Quest" he'd be a shoe in to play Shute. The kid is a monster and could easily walk away with a state championship, maybe a most pins in shortest amount of time, and possibly MOW. Some of the weight classes are tighter towards the top competition wise, but I think with the level that he is at, his weight class has much more of a separation between the #1 and #2 than any other weight class.

    2011 KY JV State results

Did Ryle not participate? Sending the whole team to State Duels? They usually have a pretty tough JV squad and I would have expected a few placers.
  4. Results for Dixie Heights: 2nd - Joey Scaggs 103 1st - Anthony Castellano - 119 5th - Cliff Yeager - 125 6th - Josh Crowder - 130 3rd - Austin Jackson - 140 1st - Zach Morris - 152 5th - Trong Le - 171 I'll see if I can't get results from the tournament director. Holmes, Bishop Brossart, and Simon Kenton's JV were there was well.

    Football coaches Vs Wrestling.

Sorry for the late reply, but now that the high school season is in full swing, I forget other boards exist. I have offered the athletic director at Highlands on many occasions to start a program. I used to volunteer at the school and became friends with him. I even went as far to tell him that I would do it unpaid, if the school would cover the start up costs. (mats, fees, busses, singlets, ect.) I can say that their football team takes first priority there, and with the AD being the football coach, it's going to happen. Yes, some of the football players play basketball, including the quarterback, but that's less than ten kids, that I'd be willing to bet, (this is speculation) are still doing some sort of weight program. Highlands may get a team as region 6 expands... and when they do, within 5-6 years, I bet, would be able to compete with Campbell Co. and Ryle for the powerhouse in region, as long as they got a youth / middle school program started at the same time.

    State Duals

For some of the bigger private schools, when it comes to other team sports (football, soccer, ect.) They do have a larger pool of boys to pull from, compared to a similar sized public school that would only have half the amount of kids eligible to play. But 100 kids verse a team of 30 can't be blamed on the private school. Beechwood (Ft. Mitchell, KY) has more kids on their football team than a lot of the other NKY schools and they only have 300 or so kids in the entire school. It's based on the tradition of the program, the coaching staff, et. al. Year after year they would beat the rival private school that had 4x the amount of boys to pull from. When I wrestled, I got beat by more public school kids than I did private school kids my senior year. Quit complaining about their dominance. It's been said a million times before on these boards, but when you're out on that mat it's 1 v. 1, and the reason you got beat wasn't because of the size of the teams, but because he was better than you.

    District 5 (Updates)

I wasn't there to see the match, because I was coaching elsewhere, so I wasn't to take anything away from Meyer. Scaggs is a tough kid. Beating him to go to the finals is something to be excited about. Injuries, though unfortunate, happen and I wish the winners in that weight class, and the rest of the district the best of luck at regionals.
  10. Results of the tournament can be found here: http://www.readingbluedevils.com/wrestling/results/cm2011/cm2011home.htm Campbell finished second to Reading (Ohio). Very good to see Yenter back in action. He wrestled 112 lost his finals match, but looked like impressive all day long. Lost by a 2 point decision. Fausz pinned Castellano in the finals. Castellano go caught on his back peeking out of a double leg and Fausz took advantage of what he was given. A good preview of the 119 semi final match come region 6 tournament time. At 130 Hamilton from CC lost by another 2 point decision from a senior at Cincinnati Badin. Very impressive for a sophmore. At 215 Charlie Cornett of Dixie Heights won the tournament, pinning all the way through. By far not the toughest weight class of the day, but he looked tough. CC and Dixie had other placers both for 3/4th and 5/6th, click the link above to see those if you want. Holmes did not place anyone.

    District 5 (Updates)

It really stinks for Joey Scaggs, exiting the tournament bc of injury... He wanted the state titke so badly. But from what I heard it was a mild concussion, so he'll be okay - You can just never be too safe.

Sad state for arithmatic in America

When the match is going by at a blistering pace, i.e. takedown quick reversal, quick reversal, quick escape, quick takedown, ect... I can see how it would become the refs first priority to score everything and not keep track of the margin of difference. However, that margin should be payed more attention to when a kid get up by quite a few points. As others have posted, it really does come down to table help. It is very frustrating when the kid running the score board is too busy texting on her phone to pay attention to the match. This happened to us multiple times during a match; a parent was so upset they were almost thrown out, but the ref. had a talk with her, and after that all was good. All of the table help are volunteers, and tournaments wouldn't run without them, but it does take a certain level of commitment to stay focused the entire time. That goes for the refs. and coaches too. From a coach's standpoint, I check the score every time the clock stops to see if points for my wrestler were correctly awarded, and if they weren't, I'm up at the table immediately. I've seen refs. not change the score one the next period had started, and I don't ever want to lose a match b/c of that. The only problem I see with this is if the tech not being called led to an injury. That would be very upsetting. Also, if the kid that got tech falled stuck the kid, or if they got pinned and that extra team point was awarded. Hopefully at this point in the match the ref can hear everyone scream "It's a tech!!!!!" and stop the match.

    Mark Hall

We can judge the ethics of the Hall family all we want, but if they are playing within the rules, then the rules need to be reevaluated and not the family playing within them. Mark Hall is one of the best wrestlers (for his age) that I have ever seen. His takedowns are amazing, and when he is riding on top, the hip pressure he keeps at all times makes him an amazing wrestler. He is definitely more naturally gifted than most, and should take advantage of as much training and instruction he can get - and if his family has the means to do that, more power to them. I don't really like how they used our state as a stepping stone, but when I watch the summer olympics years from now, I can tell everyone how I saw Mark Hall wrestle in the KY state tournament as a 7th grader. When it comes to grades and academics I think they're kinda stretching it there... Gray Middle School (Ryle's feeder) isn't too terrible of a school, and if his grades were that bad, shouldn't he have been ruled academically ineligible? We have to remember we're talking about a kid here. The cries of "it's not fair" only come because he has probably made a kid or two we know and cheer for look like a fool... I remember seeing Hall playing on the mat in between matches rolling around with the rest of the kids during a break. He's just a kid, and we need to not rip him and his family apart for pursing a sport we all love to it's greatest potential.

    2 lbs

What if a kids decent plan says he can get to 126? After the two pounds he can make 127, but would never be able to make scratch legally at 125... Would he be able to wrestle in the region and state tourney at 125(7) or would the lowest he could go be 130? Of course the regional tourney would not be his first match at that weight class...

    Football coaches Vs Wrestling.

Highlands doesn't do it because it would compete with their off season football training. They have a number of athletes that could be state placers with little wrestling experience just because of the level of dedication they put towards sports, and the athleticism that spews from Ft. Thomas. Beechwood is too small of a school - They don't have many of the varsity sports offered because they don't have enough kids interested to fill rosters. Not sure why Cov Cath doesn't have a team...
  17. Outside of the bluegrass games, where else can old has bens get a chance to wrestle this spring / summer? I'd like to be able to prove to my athletes that I can beat up on people my own age.
