    Youth regionals weigh-ins

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but I heard tonight from the parent of another team that youth regional weigh-ins will be held Saturday, February 4th----the same day as the Middle School State Tournament. Is this true? We live in NKY and have heard that Campbell Co. is hosting the regional---so if any Camp Co. folks have this info your reply is much appreciated. If the info I heard was correct I'll go ahead and pose my next question-----will any provisions be made for the kids who will be at the MS State tourney to weigh in at a different time? My son did not qualify for MS state but is going down to support his teammates who did. Thanks!

    900???

I appreciate your stance Ranger, I'm just a little torn as to whether or not I agree with it. I guess I see the 'developmental league' part of the sport in the weekly tournaments that take place leading up to state, where there are ample opportunities for a kid to achieve success at least once during that season. My son is a 10 yr old 70lb'er, and while I would love to see him standing atop the state podium, even he knows that Blake Roth is the best (or one of---not trying to start an argument with anyone there) 10 yr old 70 lb'er in the state. Keeping Blake, and others like him, out of the tournament does not eliminate what these "older" kids know----which is who is/are the best. My son won regional and CYW city wide this year so he is a decent, but not great, wrestler. I am sure that if he were to win a Roth-less state (assuming we had MS style weight brackets with one champion) that he would know that the medal around his neck does not mean he is truly the "state champ" at his age and weight, but rather just the winner of that day's tournament that is called "state". So, while it would be great to have a "state champ" in the house----and technically we do since he won two years ago at Fern Creek----I would prefer to have the best wrestlers participate regardless of Middle School experience and success. I'm with the old saying "to be the best you've got to beat the best" and this one day is the opportunity to find out who is the best. Imagine how much more that medal would mean if he caught Blake on an off day (does he even have those?) and won!!!

    900???

Nkawtg135, you will see the member name "stanmms" in the forum section who will be happy to give you the meeting information where all of these decisions are discussed. Just send him a PM. If you would like to take the lead on researching any of your suggestions above (alternate venues, etc.) I'm sure they would be happy to have the help. Understand that just three years ago the youth state tournament was held in a high school gym with less than half the seating capacity and one less mat. Rome was not built in a day, and my opinion is that the youth state tournament has gotten better every year. The great news is that it will continue to improve when folks like yourself are willing to "jump in the boat and row" to help make it better. Please give us an update as to your progress after you attend your first meeting.

    2011 Youth State Tournament

Nkawtg135, Please do not derail the conversation here. The main point of my post---and where this thread needs to stay---was to congratulate the folks at Ryle for doing a great job of running the tournament. If you want to discuss the state of high school wrestling in Kentucky as compared to other parts of the country, please start a new thread in the high school section. My point of mentioning the high school finals was to let all youth wrestling parents know that the state finals are a great atmosphere that any youth wrestler serious about the sport would enjoy watching. Nothing more, nothing less.

    2011 Youth State Tournament

Many thanks to Coach Lee and the "Raider Nation" for organizing and running a great tournament. I was there all day (7:30-7:00) and it really seemed to go pretty fast. Kentucky wrestling just gets better every year! Also, for anyone who has never attended the high school finals, do yourself (and your wrestler) the favor of going at least once. I took my son for the first time this year and it was awesome.

    Youth Region 3 Tournament

Congratulations to all wrestlers who competed today at the Region 2 tournament at Summitview MS. Also, a huge congrats to the SKY wrestling program and Richard Conrad for doing an outstanding job of running today's tournament. We were scheduled to start at 10:00 and started at 10:00 (how often does that happen?) And, with over 300 wrestlers competing, half the mats were being rolled up at 1:30, with all wrestling done by 2:00. Nice hospitality room, nice trophy presentation with podium, etc., etc., etc. BTW, I'm not with the SKY program just talking this thing up--I'm a Conner parent. A tournament run this well deserves the recognition!!

    Youth Region 3 Tournament

Good call Matt. I figured I'd screw up something in that post! Looking forward to state----I'm sure that you and Raider Nation will rock the running of that tournament. The Conner gang (and I'm sure all of NKY) are behind you----just let us know what we can do to help.

    The Middle School List

Well Ranger, if anybody doubted your ability to rank these kids they need only compare your list to the results from yesterday's state tournament. Yeah, yeah---I know some knucklehead will reply "well Ranger missed such and such weight class" or whatever.....but overall, that's simply amazing. Nice work and thanks for the effort you put in to compile and post your list(s). Any lottery numbers you'd like to share with us?

    Middle school finals

LMAO....you do know that Bic makes "PENS" not "pins"...... I do agree that Heidorf is going to be tough to pin though.........

    Middle school finals

So does anybody know if he wrestling up at 103 all year, or is he cutting to 96?

    Middle school finals

OK Ranger, who's this Kline kid from Trigg? Seems like he's getting alot of attention but up to today has been nowhere on the radar. Can this kid stand up to the competition that the other regions are going to throw at him?

    Youth State Tournament

One suggestion I will make to ALL teams attending the tournament is to sit down with your regional rep and review your rosters before they get turned in to the host team for state. We had a situation last year where one of our kids wrestled at regionals and was on our roster, but was left off the list submitted by the regional rep and given to the people running the tournament. Luckily for us there was a kid in the next weight bracket up that could not make the tournament and our boy was given his spot. However, if that boy would not have been sick our boy would not have wrestled. KEY POINT: It is not the host school's responsibility to make sure your list is complete----it is your responsibility. Do not let your regional rep turn in your roster without your coach or team mom checking it one last time. Many thanks to the fine folks at Campbell Co. for taking a bad situation and making it work.

    elementary tournaments

If you are looking in the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area there are a couple of tournaments left in the season. This weekend the Hammer & Anvil tournament is being held at Western Brown HS (I believe the previously mentioned Batavia tournament is the same as this one). Also, Loveland, OH (Eastern Cincinnati suburb) is holding a youth tournament. Just Google "Cincinnati Youth Wrestling" and you should see the CYW website which lists all of their tournaments.

    70

I would add Roth from Walton to that list.
  15. Thank you to SkyMom for bringing this up in another thread. We meant to send out an update Sunday night. Andrew Lozanno was the Conner boy who was injured and had to be taken to the hospital. I am happy to report that everything was precautionary and he was released later in the afternoon. He is back at school and I hear not feeling any after effects. Thanks to all for your kind words, prayers, and concerns. It is never fun to see a wrestler leave a tournament in that manner. Hopefully we can get him to come back out for the team so he can stay for the entire tournament next year!!
  16. ukmike22000

    CONGRATULATIONS

Thanks for your concern SkyMom and all others. Andrew is doing just fine. He was released from the hospital before the afternoon session was finished, and back at the hotel swimming not long after. Congrats to all the boys from all wrestling schools/clubs who competed this weekend. Also, thanks and great job to Campbell County for running the tournament.

    2010 summer tournaments

I heard a rumor at youth state that Conner was hosting a Border Wars qualifier on 3/13.

    Middle School State Venue

Like the venue, but do not like the youth being during the week at all. There is no good reason----other than the desire to be in Frankfort-----for this tournament to not be on the weekend. I appreciate your efforts Stan-----always a fan of long term planning. But must say, in this case, I am not a fan of the grade school kids missing school for a sports tournament.

We are failing youth wrestling programs!

TIFWIW........Garth Yenter, now a high school sophmore at Campbell County (and wrestling stud), refereed Youth Regionals at Gray Middle School two years ago (so he was an 8th grader at the time) and was, by far, the absolute best referee I've ever seen, including said "certified" referees. I'll concede the point that not all kids are cut out for it and are only doing what their coaches are telling them, but some kids do get it, and are much more able to move around the mat than alot of the older certified guys who have become too heavy to move with the action. In a ten mat tournament, I'll take ten of this kid over the certified refs any day of the week.

    Elementary Regional/State

Unanimous idiots.......just what we need. Apparently nobody noticed the fact that participation has increased every year the last few years, whether the state was being held at Conner, Johnson Central, or Fern Creek. If your numbers are going up, up, up you don't mess with a successful recipe.
  21. ukmike22000

    Elementary Regional/State

I heard it is the full $30-----that the $10 card won't work (for whatever reason). Too much money for one tournament. Goodbye state.
  22. ukmike22000

    Football/Wrestlers

Conner is the same way. Sure, outwardly they'll say that kids can do both, but quietly they say "us or them". Too bad.....
  23. ukmike22000

    Clay Brown?

Don't know the answers to any of your questions, but after watching Brown at Golden Cross' camp this past weekend the kid is a beast and will be a stud at whatever grade, whatever school, and whatever weight!!
