    Jefferson County

IMO, I would say that each person who comments on the stalling situation has a personal perspective due to experience, not really able to comment outside of their own benefit / loss. At least big Ed comments with less personal interest in match results. My personal experience is that certain teams teach stalling tactics as a way of winning matches. So, if you can just get a lead, then assume a certain style or position that keeps the score that way. These wrestlers will no longer work for points or pins late in the match. Honestly, my program does not spend any time teaching these tactics, but I am aware of the need to control a match (dictate its' pace) when you are winning. With that said, I felt that there were numerous occasions when stalling should have been called, and I am grateful for the refs who will enforce rules that have long been threatened. If the rules state that top man must work toward scoring / pinning, then anything less is stalling. If bottom man must work to score, then anything less is stalling. If neutral position must work toward take-downs / scores, then anything less is stalling. It is also interesting to me that the refs are most likely to call stalling on big guys, but I've often felt that smaller guys were guilty of the same things. I would also add one last comment: I think Larry Mann gave JCTC the best refs. I have great respect for Cattan and Shumate. I am learning to appreciate Rocky and Pikul.

I know Western won LIT. North Oldham was probably top three, as was J-Town.

Who are some of KY's Best Coaches

This discussion wasn't exactly defined, so it's wide open to interpretation. When I think of "some of KY's best coaches," I can't help but think about results (state champs, placers, team finishes, even region championships). There are plenty of coaches that I think are good guys or even do a great job, but my thoughts are limited to the more elite guys. Past results, I'm impressed by coaches who manage to do more with less, year-in and year-out. In my era (90's forward), Rusty Parks had tremendous results, as has Coomes and Anderson. I know there are others, but these guys stick out to me. When Coomes began to help at Western I commented that it is only a matter of time. Western is making a bit of a comeback. If he's there several more years, I predict some serious noise at state. Chuck Anderson. Have you ever seen the matroom at Seneca? And Seneca wasn't the first program that he made great.

    Rumble in the Hive

I usually don't do this, but I'm bored. 1) Grissom, AL (based mostly upon assumptions) 2) Woodford 3) North Oldham J-Town, Central, and Western all have tough kids too.

    Raider Rumble

I was kind-of interested in the earlier question about whether or not Grant County would be attending the tournament in Louisville tomorrow. Even if Grant County does attend the Louisville tournament, will the Myers boys not be attending with the team? Aside from the dad's behavior, I know that a lot of serious wrestling fans definitely want to see these boys wrestle. I have heard great comments about the boys: humble, respectful demeanor. Let's treat the boys separate from anything else, because they deserve that. I'm always super-impressed when great wrestlers have the whole package, like skill and attitude (Fahy, Harrison Courtney, the Ervin's, Hitchings, Jayce Carr, the list could go on and on).

This is one of those tournaments that you wish you could go watch, but your team is elsewhere.

    Region 3 Rankings 11-1-11

I spoke with a Fairdale wrestler this week, and Jake Maupin plans to go 170 and Matt Leffler plans to go 182. That should create some movement in Region 3...

Male has an experienced coach, school support, and some ready-to-go talent. They will not be the typical upstart program from what I am hearing.

    2012 State Tournament

I know the Wrestling Advisory Committee was / is scheduled to meet this fall to finalize plans for state tournament (weigh-ins, wrestling, etc.). Does anyone know if the committee has met yet? Any word on those specifics? I would like to include those details on my schedule. BTW, I've already checked the KHSAA site, so no point suggesting that.
  16. I like the spreadsheet better anyway, and these rankings are one of the few ways I can find out whats going on around the state, etc. Thanks for the extra time you put in.

    Smoky Mountain Duals

PRP attended this tournament last year and cannot speak highly enough of the tournament director and the competition. They ran nine mats, and the schedule was followed to a tee. The first day PRP wrestled five duals and was finished by 2:30, and the second day they wrestled three duals and they were finished by 11:30. Competition was also excellent, including Tennessee and Georgia schools.
  22. I'm glad there is some agreement on this board about bragging on our kids. My son was awarded the top academic student for his entire grade the last two years running, both 5th and 6th grade. He also competed in a regional math competition that included seventeen schools and around eighty participants, and he finished second. Now if his academic achievements could carry over into wrestling

    Weight Class Change Petition

I do think it is easier for a coach, parent, or wrestler to feel the impact of the weight changes on their own program, so most of us will struggle to see both sides. However, I will say that participation levels should be a huge consideration for weight classes, which all will agree favors the former weight classes. Wanting to lure more football players to wrestling is simply an inadequate argument for making changes. I agree that there is an on-going issue for the upper weight classes, but this is nothing new, it has always been an issue. Our program tends to attract the 240 pound heavy weight variety, which is cause for serious butt-whipping when we see the "full-size" heavies at state. But I'm okay with that, because it is the nature of the beast. If anything, heavy weight wrestlers demonstrate best the qualities of hand-fighting and football "lineman-ship" that we all crave to see on Saturdays and Sundays. I don't expect heavies to shoot much or move quickly around the mat, but when they do, it is awesome. I'm afraid the weight changes will expose a weaker area for our state, and personally I'm against it. However, I am recruiting harder than ever to fill these classes (isn't that all I can do?). Looking forward to this season !!
