    Iron Man

Historically, KY has not had much or any participation at the Ironman. There are 2 hurdles with getting in. First, it is a bit smaller of a tournament compared to some of the other big nationals so getting in is more difficult and is tightly controlled by Bob P. Second there is a KY bylaw that says you are not allowed to miss a day of school for an in-season tournament. Since Ironman is on a Friday/Saturday it would be in violation of that rule. Beast of the East on the other hand is a Saturday/Sunday tournament and occurs on the weekend that starts Christmas break so over the years has gotten more interest from KY wrestlers. Super32 has also been attracting more and more KY guys each year.

    Team KY Fargo Registration

Qualification is not an issue for KY. Each state is permitted to send 4 wrestlers per weight class. Qualification would only come in to play if we had a weight class where we had more than 4 wrestlers that wanted to compete. Larger states have qualifiers to determine the top 4 in each weight class. So this year and probably for several years to come until freestlye and greco grows in KY, any wrestler that wants to go to Fargo should be able to go. Once qualification becomes an issue due to growth, the KY State FS and Greco Tournament would become the qualifier as well as the Central Region tournament. We should know in about a week who has sent registration forms in. Wrestlers that have given a verbal so far that they are competing are Garth Yenter, Sean Fausz, Kevin Cooper, John Fahy, Caleb Ervin.

    Team KY Fargo Registration

Just a reminder that registration and deposit are due by June 15, 2011. Also the cost estimate is based on a projected number of wrestlers and is "worse case". More than likely the final cost will be reduced once we have a final accurate count of registered wrestlers.

    Certification question

MyGSP thanks for posting the actual bylaws. I have discussed these rules on a few occasions with different coaches and there is definitely some confusion or disagreement. My interpretation of this is as follows: The requirement to have 4 weigh-ins or 4 matches to be eligible to enter regions has NO connection to the weight certification issue. It is a separate bylaw and it does not matter what weight class you weigh in at or wrestle, just that you have 4 weigh-ins or matches in order to be eligible. Additionally there is no deadline to accomplish this only that it be "during the current season" and prior to the regional tournament This can be 3 matches at a tournament plus a dual or any combination. I would agree that you can
  9. Great job Myron! Judging by some of the scores in your matches it looks like your dominating on top as usual. Keep up the good work.

    Fargo Coverage!!

Here is the link for the live broadcast. The coverage is only on Mat 1 (Championship mat). There are 24 mats going for most of the sessions so it is purely a random draw if any of our KY kids end up wrestling matches on Mat 1. We've had a few already but the mat assignments are posted about 2-3 matches ahead. I will try to send a text and get someone to post if we know when any of the KY wrestlers are going on Mat 1. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/usa-wrestling-cadet-junior-nationals

    Fargo Coverage!!

Quick update ... Jayce Carr went 2-2 in Junior Greco. Had 2 solid wins in morning session before being eliminated in the afternoon. On a disappointing note, Cody Harald was injured earlier this week and will not be able to compete in Junior Freestyle. Cody has been training hard and it's unfortunate that he got hurt this close to the tournament. That leaves us with 4 in Cadet FS and 4 in Junior FS. Cadet starts tomorrow and Junior on Thursday.

Completely agree. I don't think I'll ever be able to eat a hot dog again. I've had my fill.

    MOW

Grant definitely was worthy of consideration for MOW beating in convincing fashion the number 1, 2, and 4 wrestlers in one of the tougher weight classes. I think anyone could argue that he also could have won the award. There is no doubt however that Osborne was a very deserving recipient. He dominated everyone he faced, plus most pins award and handled himself admirably throughout the tournament. Congratulations Ozzy on a great state title and career!

    Wrestling USA Final rankings released

Honestly I thought we would have a few more guys in the rankings. I think several are deserving of being higher up in the individual class rankings plus possibly breaking into the All Class. Brad Hitchings based on placing 5th at Beast of the East plus State Champion and 2 time runner up. Caleb Ervin moved up in the Fresh/Soph but I really thought he would make it into the All Class based on Soph Nationals. Harrison Courtney as a 4 time state champ should be higher. JJ Jude 3rd at 145 as a Fresh. plus 3rd at Fresh. Nationals.
  23. I would pick Taylor as well however Grajales has beaten several big names most notabley Alton (who also beat Palmer at Ironman)
  24. Posted on the mat.com These wrestlers were selected as #1 (rankings go out to 20 in a weight): 103- Brascetta, 112- D Carter, 119- Clark, 125- L Steiber, 130- Villalonga, 135- Taylor, 140- A Alton, 145- D Alton, 152- Tr Weatherman, 160- Kemerer, 171- Ruth, 189- Perry, 215- Carson, 285- Palma Who is the best of these #1's? Might be Steiber. He took 3rd in Vegas in the US Nat'l Senior division as a hs junior. Placed higher than Sanders from Minn who was a D1 AA. Pretty impresive. Also an interesting debate at 135 between David Taylor and Eric Grajales from Brandon, FL. Several polls have Grajales at #1.

    Caleb Ervin

I think Caleb deserves to be in the All Class rankings especially after his performance at Virginia Beach. The problem is that not many of the highly ranked kids attend this tournament. From my experience the guys who do the national rankings primarily look at head-to-head match ups with other ranked kids. They really focus on a few primary tournaments and the Virginia Beach Nationals doesn't seem to get much respect from them. I would say that the number one tournament for national all-class rankings is Fargo. After that it is probably a combination of Beast of the East, Ironman, and Super 32. There are some others as well such as the Powerade in PA, 5-Counties on the west coast, and Disney Duals. But even in these what really matters is individual match ups with other ranked wrestlers. In the three national tournaments that John placed at this year (Cliff Keen, Beast, and Super32) he ended up wrestling 8 kids in the USA wrestling All Class top 30 plus another 3 in the Fresh/Soph rankings. In the USA rankings every kid he beat he moved above and every kid he lost to he stayed below. So I guess the answer is simple, if you want to get in the national all-class rankings you just have to beat somebody that is already in them. Unless you are from a state like Ohio or Pennsylvania it really doesn't matter what your record is our whether or not you win state. The kid Caleb beat in the finals is currently ranked 30th in the all-class so I would think that should move him up above him. The big opportunity will be this summer at Fargo where there will be a lot of the top kids competing and Caleb has a strong showing. I definitely see Caleb placing at these tournaments and getting some national recognition.
