  1. Jordyn and Jayden Raney faced off in the 60 KG finals of U17 Freestyle WTT with Jordyn coming out on top. It got me thinking, was this the first time the 2 have competed against one another? Sorry if this is a dumb question and it has happened a lot in the previous years. I can't imagine the emotions that family must be dealing with. Silver lining is that Jayden won 55 KG in GR but im sure they would have loved to had both boys competing in both styles.

As always hats off to that family and thanks to them for representing Kentucky wrestling to the highest degree.

I think Luttrell wants to win a title. If he's worrying about #8 guys he's already lost IMO. Not saying to look past them but he's a top 3 guy for a reason. 138 isn't the weight I see KY having 8 guys as title contenders. I think 150 is the deepest as far as people actually capable of winning a title and I would say cut off there is with Lehman at 6.

Agreed on all counts. I dont believe he is worrying about #8 guy as he believes he will win it all, im just commenting from an outsiders perspective. Gonna have to beat em all anyways though! I think he can do it.

@ 126, #6 vs #7 in the first round to likely wrestle #10 2nd round, to then wrestle either #25 or #28 (most likely) in the quarters.  One would think that there's a better way to seed this thing. Hate to see top 8 wrestlers get knocked out due to draws that require them wrestling each other and #20 (by example) get on the podium by not wrestling anyone inside the top 10.  It's a lot easier to say "let them settle it on the mat" when it is somewhat seeded than when you have random draws like we do. #1 vs #3 at 120 in the quarters and #1 vs #2 at 175 in the semis is another head scratcher.  KHSAA out here teaching "life isn't fair" lessons to everyone haha

138 #3 vs #8 First round as well. 4 of the top 8 wrestlers being in region 1 makes for a tough draw for Hunter Luttrell.

Add another state champ from Campbell County 2022, Jonah Bowers and Brayden Brown is at Legacy in Ohio. That’s at least 12-13 state titles in that bracket.

I remember little Nate Sawyer always looked so mean, but was such a nice kid. Did Nate give up wrestling in high school?

I coached Jude in probably 4 matches against Cole before Cole was in high school. Cole was so tricky and technical. Back then Jude looked like a newborn pony, all length. He was able to get in on shots but Cole was so funky even in elementary school and usually able to defend. We never were able to get a win over Cole.

I felt the same way and several around me felt the same way.

I also feel regardless of if was technically the right call (everyone will argue if yes or no) there is an "unwritten rule" that you just do not make that call, in that situation. Am I wrong?

Thats the kind of call thats talked about 20 years in a negative way regardless of if it was right or wrong.I can think of at least one like this that still get talked about frequently and it was 25 years ago.

Ive always said this and most agree, the best officials are the ones that will not decide a tight match.

Completely agreed. Was it stalling? Yes. Should that ever be called to decide a state championship? Absolutely not.

I feel like most of our officials do a great job. Some are not perfect but try their honest best. And then there are a select 2 or 3 that look to involve themselves no matter what.

  7. I have the same picture! This tournament was the first time Jude ever beat Braedon. I think Braedon may have been 4-0 against Jude until this day. I remember watching braedon at maybe 7 years old and thinking he was the most technical small kid I have ever seen. So happy for him and what he accomplished this year.

  8. Just wanted to say congrats to all, and I feel like officials, coaches, etc. really did the best they could with the hand they were dealt. Having state finals in a high school gym is unforgivable, but those who could give effort for these kids did so.

Is Paducah Tilghman on track to start a new mini dynasty? 4 state champions. That is Union County numbers. Hats off to them. I overheard their head coach speaking to his team, and other coaches a few times, and he seemed like a very good person.

    Exactly

If you guys here want to take away from smaller schools for the sake of viewing pleasure then by all means go ahead. The people on this forum certainly have the power to do so. Not sure what stands to be gained from it though.

If they are the best team year after year then I’d give fine with that. Let’s be honest, they are the best team so isn’t every thing else just participation trophies? I get that it helps grow the sport and that’s awesome, but if a 1A school routinely beats everyone in the state doesn’t that show that there isn’t a reason to have 3 divisions?

Ohio state championships are 3 divisions…

Seems watered down. There are not that many schools with wrestling to begin with. Splitting three ways doesn’t give you the best duals possible. Call me old school but I liked it better when it was one tournament. You can’t tell me that a tournament with Union, PT, Great crossing, JC, Ryle, Walton V, Trinity wouldn’t have been better.

Let’s just cut the middle man and hand Union County 3 trophies while we are at it

Oh my yeah. Total machine on the mat. I have a Paul Bunyan story about him.

Before I got into coaching I spent one year as an official. Mark Hitchings called me to come over and officiate a dual meet for his Fern Creek MS team that was the gold standard at that time. They were wrestling a tough IN team. After a few matches of light kids Coach Hitchings informed me that he had a really tough kid who was going to wrestle a few weights and matches in a row. That kid was Wolsiefer. This bad little dude proceeded to murder like 7 kids in a row each one a little bigger. His HS career didn’t finish the way anyone wanted, but at his peak he was one of the most dominant 152/160 range kids I’ve seen.

That’s insane. He was absolutely a machine to watch and one of the first people to make me love wrestling as is he is just a bit older than me. So many studs on those old fern creek youth teams
