  1. Just kidding about the 1.5-3 minutes...but I think Scherer would give him an ok match. Probably a MD to Austin.  Maybe a little closer.  Scherer was a big and athletic 215.  He is undoubtedly better than anyone Austin has wrestled in Kentucky.  I wonder how Austin would do against Bruce or Archie Stepp from Sheldon Clark?  Talk about a men among boys!

  2. In my 15 or 16 years at the KHSAA wrestling tournament, ATM and Murton are the most impressive individuals in have watched. They just dominate with such physicality and techinicality of which I have seen no one else have in Kentucky. Not saying Murton is the best, but he is one of them. 3x KY state champ, 1x OH placer as a freshman and had a tech fall and two first minute pins in his state finals appearances. We all know what ATM has done.

For anyone discrediting Burroughs' high school ability, when he wrestled, the Senior Nationals were the pinnacle of HS wrestling and had no competition. There was no Flo Nationals or other competing tournaments. All the best seniors went.

  3. The MOW should go to the wrestler who has the most impressive tournament, not the wrestler with the best career or the wrestler with the best season.  Most impressive is not easily defined, as it could be the wrestler with the most dominating tournament or the wrestler with the most difficult path to the title. I personally think there are many possible winners for MOW at this tournament, with the Myers brothers, Carr, and Ervin at the top of the list.  I can think of a few wrestlers in the past who had a great tournament, but not necessarily the best season or career.

Josh Stepp comes to mind from Sheldon Clark in '99. He had a very tough bracket in which he was dominant, but it was his first state championship and he wasnt even a region champ that season. George King from Union County was a first time state champion in 2000, but pinned everyone in the tournament in the first period. He had a 00:49 finals match!

I hope the wrestler with the most impressive tournament wins the award and politics can be left out of the equation.

  4. I think the 1994 and 1995 Sheldon Clark teams should get mentioned.  If I remember correctly, the '95 team won state without a state champ, but had something like nine 3rd place finishers, when there were only 13 classes. The '94 team was lead by Bruce Stepp, a 3x state champ  (189, 189, HWT) and MOW that year. Apparently he was Ohio State bound if not for a terrible ATV accident.

  5. Give Myers an entire year on the mat and you will see why. Cooper is imho the best wrestler in the state right now.

Even with the lack of mat time this season, I think Myers was the most dominating wrestler at the state tournament. Cooper is great too, and I think he and Myers would be a good match. I think Myers would win, however. If Brock was bigger he would also give Myers a good match, but I think Myers would win. Just my opinion.

  6. Wow Mpire; You must have developed the rules for MOW. I usually agree with it being that day, but if a kid pins all the way through like many HWT's do at the state tourney then that person should get the MOW, but we give an award for that.

Ah but I mention past performances in the Ky state Tournament. As a whole most coaches will not see much outside the Ky state tourny. Summer wrestling is summer wrestling a completely different animal, and should have no bearing on the Ky MOW.

I would think that many of the other parents believe their son should win MOW. Ervin a 10th grader defeated a returning state champion. Austin defeated a state champion from 2 years ago. Cooper dominated his wt. class and didn't have anyone close to beating him. All of these including Stephen had a claim to the MOW.

I would say that since your boys missed most of the year and unfortunately because of your rantings on here and to anyone else who would listen they were given little notice.

I think many wrestlers had a good argument for MOW. I have always thought MOW was for the wrestler who had the most dominating performance at the tournament. It always doesnt work out that way though. With that said, I think both Myers, Cooper, Fahy, and Ervin probably had the best tournaments. Stephen Myers and Cooper destroyed everyone, Ervin and Austin Myers were dominating in the tournament and beat state champs in the finals, and Fahy won each match with ease (it never looks like he has to try to hard).

  7. Lets be honest, Stephan won one of the weakest weights in the state. It is a good thing for Stephen that he wrestled up in the begining of the year and ended up no being able to certify lower because if he would have wrestled 145 or 138 he would have been runner-up! As for OW, Fahy, Ervin, Cooper, and Austin (defeating previous state champion), all had a better argument for OW than Stephen.

I dont agree with that statement. 152 was not a weak weight class, at least not any weaker than 138 or 145. Myers dismantled Luke Troxell, who is a very good wrestler. I believe he placed 5x and and was a state finalist. Had he not been pinned by Myers he would have been teched, as the score would have been 20-5 if Troxell got off of his back. As for him finishing runner-up if he was at 138 or 145, I dont know that he would have lost to Fahy or Cooper. I think they would have been great matches and Myers would have a great shot at beating either one of them. I was very impressed by Myers and even more impressed by the fact he was up two weight classes from what he had planned to wrestle.

  8. I really enjoyed the Farnham Dudgeon Civic Center hosting the state tournament. I think it was just the right size for hosting Kentucky's state tournament and the atmosphere was unrivaled by any other place I have been to watch wrestling or to compete. I will miss that place. I just hope Alltech Arena can do the trick as well at the Farnhan Dudgeon CC did, and if they decide to put all the mats at one end of the arena then they will likely not compare favorable.

  9. as i recall MOW goes to the kid who did the best at one tournament not how he did over the whole season. not only that but courtney who pinned and teched his whole way through did a lot better than just winning by a few every time. i mean sure spencer "beat" sullivan but if you were there and you watched the match sullivan beat sullivan. how could you consider spencer over courtney who just won state 3 times and other contenders like reid and m. ervin and peace who all won it for the second time. one win does not make and MOW however someone needs to tell beau sanders to shave his unibro it doesnt seem to work

What does Courtney, Reid, Ervin, or Peace winning multiple state titles have to do with this year's MOW?    I thought it just has to do with who does the best at one tourney.  But I agree, Courtney deserved it.

  10. Bailey is athletic, but he will get dragged when he hits one of those Penn/ Iowa heavyweights with 8% bodyfat, the Jordan Whiting look alikes in better shape, with actual technique.  He'll go 1-2 or 0-2.

I hope Baily proves you wrong.  But have you seen collegiate heavyweights?  They arent all Jordan Whitings. Bailey's physique compares favorable to 95% of the college heavyweights.

  11. I think Mitch Ervin and Travis Sullivan can do well at senior nationals this year.  I think Reid has the ability to do well also.  He did do well at the Beast.  I think Peace is a good/great wrestler but if his performance at the Beast is any indication, he wont do well at nationals.  But maybe he was off that day?

  12. First, Congrats to my boy Corey Spencer.  If you have followed his career at all, you will know that he has been tough as heck for his entire high school career.  He lost to Carr by 2 in the semi's his Freshman year and then to Evans by 1 his Junior year.  He also had to fight though a tough draw and several close matches against good wrestlers to get this far i n this tournament.  After the tough breaks he finally broke through and got what he has worked hard for and what he deserves.

Second, as everyone on here knows, it is nearly impossible to continue in any kind of action when your oppenent is riding your hips or just hanging onto you in a good front head lock.  I wish Sullivan would have gone at him the whole match and we could have seen the talent both wrestlers have.  The reality is that he didn't.  He slowed the match down and tried to contain Corey by sitting on the hips and failing to use his front headlock.  Corey showed a lot of guts and escaped when he had to and won the match.  Spencer had a little more poise tonignt than one of the most poised wrestlers in state history.

Third, Coach Sullivan is a class act.  I have never seen anything more classy than when he come over after the match and hugged Corey and told him how happy he was for him.  I don't know if he reads these things or not, but I tried to find him after the match to tell him how awsome that was.  I also thought Travis handled himself with class, too.  Great career.

Congrats Corey or a huge win!

Great career for both wrestlers!  And Coach Sullivan showed a lot of class, as did Travis.  I feel for Travis and am very happy for Corey.  I dont know if stalling should have been called with legs in, because its hard to tell who is working in that situation.  A stalemate would have been better. But either way...I knew Corey was the only 112 who could beat Travis, and he did it on the biggest stage. I thought this match was a toss up. Congrats Corey on your state championship! Congrats Travis on your career and many records!
